    • Personal reasons for growing beardsPeople have unique motivations for growing beards, including self-expression, practicality, and societal norms. It's a personal decision and everyone should be free to make their own choice.

People have different reasons for keeping or growing beards, and it's ultimately a personal decision. Some people grow beards as a way to embrace their natural appearance despite societal norms, while others may grow them for practical reasons or simply because they like the way it looks. The length and style of the beard can also vary greatly from person to person. In the discussion, Ruth Butler shares her experience of growing a beard and the reactions she received, while Tom Segura and Christina Pajitzi share their thoughts on the matter. While some argue that maintaining a beard can be a hassle and may affect how others perceive you, others believe that people should be free to express themselves as they choose. Ultimately, the decision to grow or keep a beard is a deeply personal one, and it's important to remember that everyone has the right to make their own choices about their appearance.

    • Expressing Identity UniquelyRespect individual choices, challenge biases, and embrace uniqueness. Everyone deserves the freedom to express their identity in their own way.

Individuals have the right to express themselves and their identities in their own unique ways, regardless of societal norms or expectations. This was highlighted in a conversation where a woman discussed her decision to grow a beard, which was initially met with surprise and judgment, but she later came to embrace it. The conversation also touched upon the societal constructs of misogyny and patriarchy, and how they can influence people's perceptions and reactions to others' appearances. Ultimately, it's important to respect each other's choices and recognize that everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves. Additionally, the conversation revealed that some people may have certain biases or prejudices, such as a dislike for Birkenstocks or beards, but it's crucial to challenge these biases and avoid making snap judgments based on appearances alone.

Everyone can make a difference by advocating for respectful care and promoting positive changes in healthcare.

The speaker shared a graphic and uncomfortable experience of a medical procedure involving anal examination and prostate check-up. During this encounter, the doctor made insensitive comments and was rough, causing discomfort and pain for the patient. The doctor also made light of the patient's gender and age, adding to the patient's distress. However, the speaker also mentioned that the doctor eventually bought him lunch as an apology, which the speaker found to be a thoughtful gesture. Despite the unpleasant experience, the speaker acknowledged the importance of regular health check-ups and the need for everyone to take responsibility for making positive changes in their own way.

    • Authenticity and Action Matter for Corporate Support of Social CausesAuthentic corporate support for social causes requires sincere actions and genuine commitment, not just empty gestures or insincere statements.

While corporate support for social causes like Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a step in the right direction, authenticity and action are key. Empty gestures, such as insincere emails or statements without follow-through, can be perceived as insincere and damaging. Representation and diversity within organizations, particularly at the top levels, are essential for genuine connection and understanding. The lack of it can lead to a disconnect and undermine the sincerity of the messages being conveyed. Ultimately, meaningful change requires more than just words; it requires action and genuine commitment.

The speaker also made a derogatory comment about women, stating that they are not innovators and would never engage in such behavior. The speaker then compared the man's actions to a previous story of a man having sex with a peanut butter sandwich between two mattresses, and expressed a preference for the sandwich scenario. The speaker then presented a hypothetical scenario where the man was given the option to have sex with a sandwich in front of an audience or continue humping the dirt, and the man chose the former, but the speaker expressed a preference for the latter scenario. • Maintaining a strong family bond despite separationPrioritizing consistent involvement from both parents creates a stable environment for children, but addressing underlying issues is crucial for healthy relationships and personal growth.

The importance of maintaining a strong family bond was showcased in a unique way through the story of a country music star and his ex-wife. They prioritized ensuring their children saw both parents every morning and every night, even if they spent nights at different houses. This arrangement allowed for consistent involvement from both parents, creating a special and stable environment for their daughters. However, the star's career break and subsequent return brought up questions about his authenticity and potential struggles with alcoholism. The analysis by Dr. Drew suggested that the star might be repressing emotions and dealing with alcoholism, which could explain his intense emotions during interviews. This takeaway highlights the importance of open communication and addressing underlying issues to maintain healthy relationships and personal growth.

    • Unexpected humor from the elderly and societal normsSociety discourages laughing at the elderly, but their unexpected humor can bring joy. Some find psychopathic traits attractive due to the halo effect, and understanding conditions like Asperger's is crucial for early diagnosis and support.

The elderly can be a source of unexpected humor, but societal norms may discourage laughing at their expense. The conversation also touched upon various personal experiences and topics, including dentures, transitioning, and attraction to individuals with dark personality traits. The discussion revealed that some people find psychopathic traits attractive due to the halo effect, which is the assumption that physically attractive individuals possess other positive traits. Additionally, a concern was raised about a friend named Tom and the possibility that he might have Asperger's, a form of autism, and the importance of early diagnosis and understanding of such conditions.

    • Exploring the Darker Aspects of Human NatureIndividual fascination with dark content doesn't indicate a disorder, but rather a reflection of societal norms and individual perspectives.

The enjoyment of dark or violent content does not necessarily indicate the presence of a disorder like Asperger's Syndrome. Instead, it might be a reflection of an individual's fascination with the darker aspects of human nature, which society often discourages. The speaker shared an anecdote from his high school days, where he gave a controversial speech advocating for violence against bothersome people, which surprisingly earned him a spot in the finals. This incident highlights how society's norms and expectations can suppress certain thoughts and desires, leading individuals to explore them in secret. It's essential to remember that everyone has a unique perspective and that exploring the darker aspects of one's mind doesn't necessarily mean having a disorder. It's all about finding a healthy balance and understanding the societal norms.

246: How Your Authentic Self Changes With Time

246: How Your Authentic Self Changes With Time

As we journey through life, conflict and confrontation of the self is inevitable, but it is how we face these challenges that reveal our most authentic selves.

In this episode, Sarah Elkins and her guest Lisa Lackey discuss this idea, as well as what authenticity means to them and how it is something that can change with time.

    Highlights

    • Authenticity is fluid and changing.
    • We can't be everything all at once.
    • Face challenges and pursue your dreams.

    Quotes

Authenticity is malleable. You have to allow space for transformation, and if you have this rigid idea of your authentic self then there is no room for transformation.

We can't be everything all at once, we can be what we want to be but we can't do it all at the same time.

I didn't know where I belonged, and I still don't know where I belong, and I have to constantly give myself permission to be able to sit in that and be okay with that. I ask myself, "what do I need?" and "what do I need to make myself feel like I fit in?" and "Is it okay to not fit in?"

    About Sarah Elkins

"Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision."

In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with.

My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.

The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available!

Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.
