    Podcast Summary

    • The Importance of Taking Responsibility for Your LifeBest-selling author Jordan Peterson emphasizes the significance of taking responsibility for your actions and working towards a goal, even the bad ones, using sports figures as an example. He warns against aimlessness and offers a mindset tool to help motivate you to do hard things.

That taking responsibility for your life is crucial for greatness. Best-selling author and professor, Jordan Peterson, emphasizes this point in his book "12 Rules for Life" and his lectures, which have gained massive popularity. Peterson believes that sports figures are admirable because they embody the idea of taking responsibility for their actions and working towards a goal, even if it's a bad one. He also discusses the dangers of wandering through life without a purpose and offers a mindset tool to help motivate you to do hard things. Overall, this episode provides valuable insights on the importance of responsibility, the lessons we can learn from sports figures, and the risks of living without a clear vision or aim.

    • Finding meaning in the pursuit of positive changeEmbrace responsibility and make a positive impact on self and others to find meaning in life's challenges

Philosophical concepts become truly meaningful when they influence our actions and shape our perceptions towards a worthy goal. Life's challenges, both inherent and self-inflicted, can be addressed by embracing responsibility and finding meaning in the pursuit of positive change for ourselves and others. Conflict arises from differing perceptions and complex problems, but the adoption of responsibility can help navigate through these difficulties and reduce suffering. Ultimately, meaning is the instinct that guides us through life's challenges, and it is found in the commitment to make a positive impact on ourselves and those around us.

    • Striving for a clear conscience and personal growthTaking responsibility for actions and living up to potential leads to a clear conscience and personal growth, benefiting self and others.

Having a clear conscience and living up to your potential are essential for personal peace and growth. A clear conscience comes from taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, while guilt and shame stem from not living up to your potential and interfering with others' ability to do so. Spontaneously admiring individuals who embody discipline, physical and mental perfection, and a broader moral framework can serve as a model for personal improvement. This improvement should not only benefit ourselves but also those around us, reflecting positively on our teams, communities, and culture as a whole. In essence, life is a game, and we should strive to win not only for ourselves but also for those around us.

    • Find inspiration in sports for personal growth and ethical frameworkObserving athletes' sportsmanship and teamwork can inspire us to set meaningful goals and develop an ethical framework, preventing bitterness and suffering.

Observing sports or acts of great achievement can provide us with valuable models for responsibility and meaning in our own lives. The embodied nature of sports makes it a bridge between abstract concepts like philosophy and actionable steps. Admiring and imitating the behavior of athletes, particularly their sportsmanship and ability to work well with others, can lead to personal growth and the development of an ethical framework. Without a noble aim or goal, the suffering and challenges of life can lead to bitterness, cruelty, and a desire to make the world a worse place. Therefore, it's essential to have a purpose or direction in life to minimize suffering and prevent bitterness. Sports can serve as an inspiration for setting and pursuing meaningful goals.

    • Reflecting on past experiences for personal growthUnderstanding past events and reasons behind them helps prevent mistakes and sets achievable goals for future.

Understanding your past and defining your aims are crucial for personal growth. The past authoring program, as discussed, helps individuals process their emotional experiences by reflecting on significant events and understanding the reasons behind them. This process allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent repeating them in the future. The present and future authoring programs also focus on identifying virtues and faults, respectively, to help individuals better understand themselves and set achievable goals. Ultimately, by taking the time to reflect on our past and present, we can establish a clearer vision for our future and live more intentional lives.

    • Setting clear goals and plans for personal growthHaving precise goals and plans is crucial for personal development, including family, career, health, and relationships. Break down larger goals into manageable tasks, learn new skills, and continually refine your aims as you grow.

Having clear goals and plans is essential for personal growth and development. Whether it's about family, career, health, or relationships, it's important to have a vision for what you want and then take steps to make it a reality. This may involve breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and being willing to make sacrifices and learn new skills along the way. By being precise in your speech and aims, you can better perceive the opportunities and obstacles in your path, and continually refine your goals as you learn more about yourself and the world around you. Remember, a bad plan is better than no plan, and the journey towards your goals will involve making mistakes and trying new things. So don't be afraid to start aiming, even if your aim is vague or off target at first.

    • Avoiding 'No Man's Land' in LifeReflect on goals and potential consequences, acknowledge weaknesses, and stay focused on the path to success.

Aimlessness and lack of direction in life can lead to unnecessary suffering and hardships. This concept was likened to being in "no man's land," a military term for the dangerous and uncertain space between two opposing sides. To avoid this, it's essential to identify your goals and the negative outcomes that come with not achieving them. By acknowledging your weaknesses and working to overcome them, you can motivate yourself to stay on the right path and avoid descending into a potentially disastrous situation. So, take some time to reflect on your goals and the potential consequences of not reaching them, and use that motivation to work on your weaknesses and stay focused on the path to success.

    • Embrace pain for personal growthFacing difficulties leads to long-term gains and personal growth, while avoiding them may result in deeper pain and regret.

Facing difficult situations and experiencing pain, whether it be through challenging conversations or physical training, is necessary for personal growth and future gains. Avoiding these difficulties may provide temporary comfort, but the long-term consequences can lead to deeper pain and regret. This concept applies to various aspects of life, from professional and interpersonal relationships to physical health and cognitive function. By embracing the pain and pushing through, individuals can improve their situation and ultimately achieve greater success and fulfillment.

    • Optimize goal-setting for growth and progressEffectively set goals by breaking them into manageable steps, maintaining a reasonable timeframe, and focusing on personal and community benefits.

Effective goal-setting involves developing skills towards a vision, even if that vision ultimately proves to not be the right fit. This process allows us to gain valuable wisdom and make progress towards our next plan. To optimally set goals, break them into manageable, incremental steps within a reasonable timeframe, and ensure they benefit not only ourselves but also our family and community. By doing so, we increase our chances of success and expand our skills in a rewarding manner. Remember, life presents challenges, but proper goal-setting equips us with the tools to tackle them effectively.

    • The power of purpose in enduring sufferingEmbracing a meaningful purpose can help us cope with life's challenges and even thrive in the face of suffering, as seen in the resilience of those working in palliative care wards.

Having a noble purpose can help us endure and even thrive in the face of suffering and challenges. The speaker emphasizes that life is inherently connected to suffering, but our response to it matters. By embracing a meaningful purpose, we can find the strength and resilience to confront life's hardships and improve our situation, rather than becoming bitter and cruel. The example of people working in palliative care wards is given as evidence that even in the most difficult circumstances, we can find the inner toughness to persevere. The first noble truth of Buddhism, that life is suffering, is acknowledged, but the optimistic perspective is that we have the capacity to not only cope with it but also make things better.

    • The strength to overcome life's challengesRealizing our resilience leads to a greater life, taking responsibility and finding meaning in experiences are keys to overcoming hardships.

Jordan Peterson is that despite the challenges and hardships we face in life, we possess an incredible strength to overcome them. This realization is not a sign of naive optimism, but rather an acknowledgement of our resilience. In the upcoming part of this interview series, Dr. Peterson will delve deeper into the topics of pain and suffering, and how we can effectively cope with them. It's important to remember that taking responsibility for our lives and finding meaning in our experiences can lead to a greater life. As Winston Churchill once said, "The price of greatness is responsibility." Stay tuned for the next episode at LewisHouse.com slash 664. Don't forget to share this with your friends and check out Dr. Peterson's book and online course on self-authoring.

Burt Watson- Boxing and MMA Legend

Today,  I have a conversation with the legendary Burt Watson who is known in the boxing and MMA community.

Burt’s rise in the boxing business started when he became the business manager for his close friend, Smoken’ Joe Frazier.

It didn’t take long for Burt to become recognized for his managerial and organizational skills. He quickly became one of the industry’s most sought-after event coordinators.

He has worked of course, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali Larry Holmes, George Foreman, and Ken Norton, Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leaonard, Roberto Duran, Julio Chavez, Roy Jones, and when I say the list goes on...believe me ….it goes on!

In 2021 Burt joined Bellator MMA- where he inspires and motivates fighters to give their best effort in the ring, cage, and in life.

Burt also makes time to share his energy, enthusiasm, and his story about his prostate cancer journey-a fight he never thought he would have to take on. He’s made it part of his life’s mission to educate men and their families about the disease, so that men won’t have to take on a fight against an opponent they know nothing about.

Burt and I caught up to talk about life, decision making, and life’s purpose.
