    enAugust 11, 2014

    Podcast Summary

    • Mindset's impact on personal and professional successEmbrace your past experiences and inner mindset to excel in new endeavors, even when transitioning between different fields or industries.

Mindset plays a crucial role in personal and professional success, even when transitioning between different fields or industries. Brendan Shob's story, as shared on the School of Greatness podcast, highlights how his athletic mindset helped him excel in the UFC after a career in football. Additionally, the importance of staying true to oneself and embracing new experiences, even when they lead to initial discomfort or hardships, was a recurring theme in their conversation. Ultimately, the conversation between Lewis Howe and Brendan Shaw underscores the idea that our past experiences and inner mindset can serve as valuable assets in achieving greatness in new endeavors.

    • Embracing Change and Learning from Past ExperiencesIntense relationships can lead to personal growth and new opportunities, even if they don't last. Following dreams and embracing change can lead to happiness and success.

Sometimes intense, passionate relationships can lead to significant personal growth and new opportunities, even if they don't last forever. The speaker moved across the country for love, went through a difficult year, but eventually found happiness and success in a new place. He also emphasized the importance of following one's dreams, even if the outcome is uncertain. The shared experiences and connections from their football days helped them reconnect, and they discovered common ground despite the challenges of maintaining a friendship after a romantic relationship. Overall, the speaker's story highlights the importance of embracing change and learning from past experiences.

    • Athletic careers filled with pressure and competitionPressure to perform at their best in high-pressure athletic environments shaped their mindsets and contributed to their success.

Both the speaker and Brendan faced intense competition and pressure throughout their athletic careers, whether it was in college football, arena football, or the UFC. This pressure drove them to constantly improve and perform at their best, as their jobs were on the line every day. The NFL and UFC present unique challenges, with the NFL offering a level of protection for top recruits and the UFC requiring a high level of entertainment value for viewers. Both men transferred colleges and practiced with professional teams, and they shared experiences of intense competition and the importance of staying on top of their game. Ultimately, their shared backgrounds in high-pressure athletic environments shaped their mindsets and contributed to their success.

    • UFC Fighters Have Calm Demeanor Outside of the RingDespite the risks and stigma, UFC fighters exhibit calm demeanors and have diverse personalities beyond the sport.

Being a UFC fighter doesn't define a person's demeanor or personality. Despite the physicality and potential injuries involved in the sport, many fighters have a calm and chill demeanor outside of the ring. The speaker, for instance, revealed that he's never been in a street fight and is more of a lover than a fighter. However, the risks of injuries, particularly during intense training sessions, are real. The speaker shared an experience of getting injured during practice and having to deal with the consequences. Additionally, the stigma of being a UFC fighter can sometimes make social situations challenging, especially when trying to fit in with certain crowds. The speaker shared an experience of being set up on a date on a reality TV show, which turned out to be a stressful and uncomfortable experience. Overall, being a UFC fighter requires a unique blend of physical and mental toughness, but it doesn't define a person's character or personality.

    • Balancing Personal and Professional Life in SportsProfessional athletes face challenges in maintaining relationships due to career demands, fear of infidelity, and abundance of options.

Maintaining a personal life while being a professional athlete can be challenging due to the ego and focus required for success. The speaker shares his experience of prioritizing his career over relationships and the resulting feelings of disconnection. He also acknowledges the presence of attractive options and the fear of commitment. The speaker's current girlfriend, who is also driven and focused, presents a different dynamic, but the fear of infidelity and the abundance of options remain. Overall, the speaker's reflections highlight the complexities and tensions between personal and professional life in the context of professional sports.

    • The Importance of Finding a Fulfilling PartnerBalancing multiple relationships can lead to emptiness. Find a partner who is not just physically attractive but emotionally and mentally fulfilling. Commitment and stability are key to a successful relationship.

While having options can be alluring, it can also lead to a never-ending cycle of emptiness and dissatisfaction. The speaker shares his personal struggle with balancing multiple relationships and the fleeting nature of physical attraction. He emphasizes the importance of finding a partner who is not only physically attractive but also emotionally and mentally fulfilling, like his current girlfriend who challenges him and shares common interests. Ultimately, the speaker reflects on the importance of commitment and stability in a relationship, rather than constantly chasing new experiences.

    • Understanding personal patterns in relationshipsSelf-reflection is key to recognizing patterns in relationships and striving for growth. Value a partner who shares ambition and respects personal space.

Self-reflection and understanding personal patterns are crucial in relationships. The speaker acknowledges a pattern in his relationships and the common denominator being himself. He expresses the desire to be more selfless and introspective, but also values a partner who shares his drive and ambition. The speaker also shares his discomfort with women who want to spend too much time with him and values those who respect his need for personal space and focus on their own goals. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of having a clear vision for what one wants in a relationship and being open to growth and change.

    • Birthdays and love for handball unite two athletes, but unique challenges lie aheadTwo athletes share a love for handball and birthdays, but face unique challenges like lack of a pro league in the US and playing professionally in Europe, yet remain committed to their dream of representing the US in the Olympics.

Despite having shared birthdays and a love for sports, the journey to becoming professional handball players for both individuals presents unique challenges. With no pro league in the US and most team members practicing and playing professionally in Europe, the dynamic is tough. However, their passion for the sport keeps them going, with a shared dream of representing the US in the Olympics. Handball, a sport that involves using your hands to play on a court similar to basketball but with a smaller ball and no water like water polo, is their chosen path. Though it's a different experience than their previous football careers, they're committed to mastering this new skill and competing at the highest level.

    • From Football to MMA: One Man's Inspiring JourneyDetermination and hard work can help you pursue even the biggest dreams, no matter your age or size.

This individual's determination to pursue his dreams, despite facing challenges related to his size and age, is truly inspiring. He shares how his love for sports and martial arts led him to football in high school, but his true passion was in mixed martial arts (MMA). Growing up, he was captivated by the movie "Bloodsport" and the UFC, and despite the intense training required, he was determined to become a fighter. His athletic ability, combined with his mental fortitude, led him to pursue Division One football, but ultimately, his dream was to compete in the UFC. Even at the age of 40, he still holds onto the hope of representing the USA in the Olympics. His story is a reminder that no dream is too big, and that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

    • Following your passion can lead to unexpected opportunitiesBelieve in your passion and heart, even if it means leaving behind something familiar. Hard work and dedication can lead to unexpected success.

Following your passion and heart can lead to unexpected opportunities and success, even if it means leaving behind something you've dedicated your life to. The speaker shares his personal experience of falling out of love with football during his senior year and transitioning to mixed martial arts (MMA) training. Despite having a scholarship and being recruited by NFL teams, he chose to pursue MMA instead, starting from scratch with no experience. With hard work, dedication, and a belief in himself, he eventually trained with MMA legends and competed in the Golden Gloves tournament. The speaker emphasizes the importance of passion, heart, and belief in oneself, even when faced with doubts and challenges.

    • Believing in oneself despite family disapproval leads to unexpected successFamily support and self-belief can lead to unexpected achievements, even when facing adversity. Taking risks and believing in oneself can lead to great rewards.

Having the support of family and believing in oneself can lead to unexpected success, even in the face of adversity. The speaker shares his experience of competing in amateur boxing matches despite his father's disapproval. He puts pressure on himself to win and surprises everyone, including his dad, with his knockout victories. The experience boosts his confidence and leads him to enter and win a digital tournament in the Black Belt Division as a white belt. The importance of family support, self-belief, and taking risks to achieve goals is emphasized.

    • From unknown fighter to contract: Determination and resilienceBelieving in oneself and pushing forward can lead to opportunities, even in the face of loss.

Determination and resilience can lead to success, even in the face of adversity. The speaker shared his experience of being a martial arts fighter who made it to the finals of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, despite losing to his teammate in the final round. He recounted how he went from being an unknown fighter to gaining recognition and a contract, all through hard work and a strong mindset. The show involved living in a house with other fighters for six weeks, with no outside communication or entertainment, and the only way to leave was to train. The pressure and testosterone-fueled environment pushed the fighters to their limits, and the speaker remained calm and focused, believing in himself and his abilities. Although he didn't win the final fight, he was still offered a contract, emphasizing that even a loss can lead to opportunities if one keeps pushing forward.

    • From winning a local fight to facing world-class opponentsExpect greatness and demand it of yourself when pursuing a world-class title, as you'll face top-tier opponents and veterans in your journey.

Making it into a competition or reality show is just the beginning of the journey. The real challenge lies ahead, as the competition or reality show is only a stepping stone to reaching the ultimate goal. This was the experience of a fighter, who after winning his first fight in front of his hometown crowd and knocking out a highly ranked opponent, realized that the UFC was a whole new level of competition. He urged others to expect greatness and demand it of themselves, as they should anticipate facing world-class opponents and veterans in their pursuit of a world-class title.

    • UFC Fighters' Pre-Fight Anxiety and ChallengesUFC fighters face significant anxiety and unique challenges leading up to their fights, including fear of rankings, sponsorship limitations, and the pressure to 'fake it till they make it' in the octagon.

UFC fighters, despite their tough exterior and impressive performances in the octagon, experience significant anxiety and discomfort leading up to their fights. Fighters like the speaker in this conversation, who has a record of 14 wins and 4 losses, are not exempt from these feelings. Rankings, sponsorships, and the unique challenges of the UFC environment contribute to the nervousness and uncertainty that fighters face. Despite the fear, they put on a brave face and "fake it till they make it" once they enter the arena. The waiting games and hurdles leading up to the fight day are also a source of stress for the athletes. Additionally, the UFC's monopoly on sponsorships limits the athletes' earning potential outside of their UFC contracts.

    • Maximizing Earnings and Staying Relevant for UFC AthletesUFC athletes can build their personal brand, engage fans, and secure sponsorships through social media. Starting a podcast is another effective way to share stories and build a loyal fanbase.

UFC athletes have unique opportunities to build their personal brand and engage with fans through social media. Outside the octagon, they can secure sponsorship deals and use social media platforms to promote them. Inside the octagon, there are limitations on what can be displayed, but the UFC encourages athletes to use social media extensively. This investment in social media not only helps athletes connect with fans but also makes them more attractive to sponsors. Starting a podcast is also an effective way for athletes to share their stories and build a loyal fanbase. Ultimately, using social media and other platforms to build a strong personal brand is essential for UFC athletes to maximize their earning potential and remain relevant in the sport.

    • Fans' requests led UFC fighter to adopt 'Big Brown' nicknameAuthenticity resonates with fans, leading to unexpected opportunities and strong connections.

Authenticity resonates with fans. UFC fighter Brendan "Big Brown" Allen gained his unique nickname not through his own choosing, but through the persistent requests of his fans. Despite not initially intending to change his name, Allen ultimately complied due to the overwhelming support from his audience. Allen's popularity stems from his relatability as a real and unfiltered individual, who grew up with a blue-collar background and worked hard to achieve his dreams. His story shows that being true to oneself can create a strong connection with fans and lead to unexpected opportunities.

    • Shared experiences and commonalities among successful peopleSuccess is not limited to those with extraordinary backgrounds, many have achieved it through hard work and determination despite normal upbringings.

Success is not limited to those with extraordinary backgrounds or circumstances. Many successful people have grown up in normal homes and have achieved their goals through hard work and determination. The speaker, who grew up in a normal household and has a Prius, emphasizes that there are plenty of successful individuals who have similar backgrounds. He also mentions that they both moved to L.A. and have their own podcast, The Fighter and the Kid. These shared experiences and commonalities make their connection strong and inspire them to continue striving for success. Additionally, they find comfort and relaxation in their respective escapes, whether it's training or enjoying the beach.

    • Overcoming fear through mental preparationSuccessful people prepare mentally to overcome fear and focus on their abilities to achieve their goals.

Successful people, like a podcast host and a professional fighter, prepare mentally to overcome fear and focus on their abilities to achieve their goals. The fighter shared his process of reminding himself of his hard work and dedication to build confidence and trust in himself during high-pressure situations. He emphasized the importance of not letting fear paralyze him and instead using it as motivation to perform at his best. By focusing on his abilities and trusting in his training, the fighter has been able to adapt and succeed in his career. This mindset can be applied to any situation where self-doubt or fear threatens to hold someone back.

    • Brendan Shob's Humility and DedicationBrendan Shob values humility and hard work, refusing to accept recognition until he feels he's earned it. He emphasizes the importance of getting back up after failures and staying focused on improvement.

Brendan Shob values humility and hard work, even when faced with recognition he feels he doesn't deserve yet. He shared a personal story from his college football days, where he refused to wear the team gear until he felt he had contributed enough. This mindset carries over into his current life as a UFC fighter, where he remains grounded and focused on improvement. When asked about his definition of greatness, he emphasized the importance of getting back up after failures. Overall, Brendan Shob's interview highlighted his character and dedication to his craft. Gordo Byrn on Making A 1000 Day Plan, Small Promises, The 5:2 Rule, & Designing Your Best Life
In today’s panoply of role models, rare is the story of an everyman transforming his life wholesale—then sharing his process openly and honestly with humility and vulnerability. Today I convene with one of these aspirational, endurance veteran and personal hero Gordo Byrn. Gordo is someone who greatly inspired and influenced my endurance career and mentored me from afar in ways beyond my ability to calculate. This conversation, long in the making, is thus personally special. A former private equity investment banker, Gordo metamorphosed into an elite ultra-endurance athlete, a student of human performance, an endurance coach, and, mostly, a devoted family man. He’s also the co-author of the endurance bible 'Going Long'—an incredible resource for any and all athletes seeking to better understand and apply the principles of endurance. A Web 1.0 blogger and podcaste, Gordo's humble guidance and wisdom was a consistent presence during my heavy training years, a tradition he continues today on Twitter (@feelthebyrn1)—a platform he uses to share his experience on everything from endurance training to marriage, personal finance and parenting. Meeting Gordo was like meeting a lost twin for the first time, and this conversation was everything I hoped it would be. Watch: YouTube. Read: Show notes. The Swedish superstar and multiple Ultraman and Otillo champion Jonas Colting calls Gordo ‘Tony Robbins in a Speedo.’ I agree with this statement, and after listening to this one, you will too. 960 The Voice of Truth

    960 The Voice of Truth

In your life, where does the voice of truth come from? Whose whispers gain your greatest attention?

Maybe it's the constant failures and short-comings.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Maybe it's the faults of your past.

Maybe it's your own belief that you're never good enough.

Why is it that we hang out with our stumbles and failures questioning our worth?

Never once did God hesitate when He created you; fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every hair on your head.

Yet where is the voice of truth?

Is it the naysayers, the badgers, the mockers? Is that where your voice of truth is being solidified and defined?

I want you to really think about whom you are putting your trust in.

The K.I.S.S. ~ The Voice of Truth!

REFLECTION: Today, I want you to reflect on these three questions.

    1. Where is the voice of truth coming from?
    2. What is the voice of truth telling you?
    3. How are you using the voice of truth in your life?

If you are hearing God, the only voice of truth, then you know you are loved, given a gift of salvation, and grace for your life's journey.

That's the voice of truth you need to be listening to.

Not the negative CRAP, the doubts and drama of others, and not the daily sagas of self-centered mindsets.

It's all about control, earthly control. What happened to Heavenly control?

Let God wash away the torment of lies that threaten your greatness He's creating within you.

Let it go! Let God have it all!

    Give Him your heart.
Dedicate your life to glorify Him.
Rejoice with the voice of truth.

As you go out this week...

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!"

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!
