A Merry Cast: Past, Present and Future of US Politics

    enDecember 28, 2023
What percentage of LinkedIn users don't visit other job sites?
How has social media affected public perception and discourse?
What criticisms were raised about Jill Biden's Christmas video?
What shift in societal values is noted in the US?
How do Elon Musk and Taylor Swift represent cultural change?

    • Finding Great Candidates on LinkedInLinkedIn is a top platform for hiring professionals, with 70% of its users not visiting other job sites. Discover potential candidates, even those not actively looking, by leveraging LinkedIn's vast user base.

LinkedIn is a valuable resource for businesses looking to hire professionals, as over 70% of its users don't visit other leading job sites. This means that great candidates, like Sandra, who might not be actively looking for a new job but could be open to the perfect role, can be found on LinkedIn. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the unusual White House Christmas video released by Jill Biden, which has sparked criticism and comparisons to previous first lady's videos. Despite the opulence and tradition of the White House at Christmas, the social media-inspired video didn't quite land with audiences and raises questions about the need for such videos and their impact. On a more reflective note, the episode also highlighted the importance of considering the unique strengths and appeal of various social media platforms for businesses and individuals alike.

    • Impact of January 6th Capitol Hill attack on American democracyThe January 6th Capitol Hill attack serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving democratic institutions and learning from history, despite ongoing themes of division and resistance to change.

The events of the past, specifically the January 6th Capitol Hill attack, have deeply impacted the present and future of American democracy as we know it. Heather Cox Richardson, a professor and political historian, shared her personal feelings of dismay when the Confederate battle flag was carried inside the US Capitol during the riots. This incident, which broke her heart as someone who has studied history, serves as a stark reminder of the efforts made throughout history to protect the United States and the significance of preserving its democratic institutions. The discussion also touched upon the ongoing themes of "wokeness" and the fight against it in various aspects of American society. The past, present, and future of American democracy remain uncertain, but it's crucial for us to reflect on the lessons of history and work towards a hopeful future.

    • January 6 events: A challenge to American democracyWe must protect democracy from subversion by recognizing historical patterns, uniting for democratic principles, and ensuring equal representation and the right to participate in government.

The events of January 6, 2021, represent a significant challenge to American democracy, and we are currently at a crossroads where we must decide whether to protect it or let it be subverted. This is not a new phenomenon in US history, as there have always been powerful individuals attempting to undermine democracy. The rise of right-wing authoritarianism and the attempts to control key institutions, such as the Supreme Court, Senate, and presidency, have occurred before. Disinformation, while always present, has been turbocharged in the digital age. One notable example is the American South in the 1850s, where access to opposing viewpoints was restricted to maintain control. It is essential to recognize these patterns and unite in defense of democratic principles, ensuring equal representation and the right to participate in government.

    • Social media amplifies disinformation, creating echo chambers and distorting realitySocial media can disproportionately amplify disinformation, creating echo chambers and distorting our perception of reality, while historical precedents invoke complex legal and constitutional questions in contemporary political contexts.

Social media has amplified disinformation in the public sphere, creating an echo chamber effect where certain voices, regardless of their actual power or influence, can reach a disproportionate audience. This can distort our perception of reality and exacerbate existing divisions. Additionally, historical precedents are being invoked in contemporary political contexts, such as the use of the 14th Amendment to prevent a presidential candidate from running due to their role in inciting insurrection. While the historical intent of the amendment is clear, its application in modern times is uncertain and raises complex legal and constitutional questions.

    • Deep concerns about the impact of the upcoming presidential election on American democracyBoth parties express deep concerns about the potential impact of the election on democracy, with each side worried about the other's candidate's tendencies and plans to alter democratic institutions.

Both Democrats and Republicans express deep concerns about the potential impact of the upcoming presidential election on American democracy. Hillary Clinton, a prominent Democrat, warned that a second term for Donald Trump could lead to the end of the country as we know it due to his authoritarian tendencies. On the other hand, there are Republicans who share similar concerns about Joe Biden. This situation is not unique to partisanship, but rather a reflection of a deeply divided political climate. It's essential to remember that this issue transcends individuals and is about larger movements within the United States. Trump and his supporters have openly discussed plans to undermine institutions like the civil service, weaponize departments like the Department of Justice, and even consider military intervention. These actions, if implemented, could significantly alter the democratic landscape of the country.

    • The Constitution and democratic accountability limit Trump's powerDespite Trump's controversial actions, the US Constitution and democratic processes prevent him from becoming a dictator. However, social media and young Americans' attitudes towards liberal values pose potential threats to democratic norms.

While President Donald Trump may make controversial appointments or immigration policies during his term, the constitution and democratic accountability will limit his ability to become a dictator. However, the way candidates are perceived on social media, particularly through strong and invincible images, can significantly shape American politics. The adherence of young Americans to traditional liberal values, such as individual importance and the rule of law, is a concern as some have shown signs of illiberal tendencies. Ultimately, the protection of democratic values depends on the people who uphold them.

    • Understanding the Complexity of American PoliticsHistorians can help clarify the functions of American politics amidst growing disillusionment, while the rise of tech influencers adds a new layer to power dynamics.

The current political climate in America is shaped by various factors, including dissatisfaction with the system, misunderstanding of its functions, and the growing influence of powerful figures in technology. The protests in Gaza are just one piece of a larger puzzle, which also involves a perceived loss of foundational American values. Younger generations, who have not experienced a responsive political system, are particularly disillusioned. Historians have a role to play in addressing this issue by emphasizing the design and intended functions of the system, rather than just its past failures. Furthermore, the rise of influential figures in tech, such as Elon Musk, adds a new dimension to power dynamics, potentially rivaling that of future presidents. It's essential to broaden our focus and consider these factors when discussing the future of American politics.

    • A shift in societal values and power dynamicsAmericans are demanding change, particularly in areas like gun violence and public discourse, and are more engaged than ever before.

We are witnessing a significant shift in societal values and power dynamics in the US, with figures like Elon Musk and Taylor Swift representing different aspects of this change. Historically, we have idolized individualistic, often white male figures, but recent events have exposed their flaws. Elon Musk, once seen as a savior, now faces setbacks and criticism. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift, who tells inclusive stories and brings joy, embodies a more positive future. The past few years have shown that Americans are waking up to the extremes of our current reality and demanding change, particularly in areas like gun violence and public discourse. Despite the challenges, I am more optimistic now than I was in 2014, as people are becoming more engaged and demanding a better future for themselves and the country.

    • The Iowa caucuses mark the start of the 2024 US election processJoin the BBC team for coverage of the 2024 US election, starting with the Iowa caucuses. The importance of real choices in democracy was emphasized.

The upcoming US election in 2024 is expected to be a significant and consequential event, with real people making real choices during the Iowa caucuses in January 2023. This moment marks a shift from polls and discussions to the actuality of the election process. The BBC team is looking forward to covering this event together in person, and listeners can join them by getting in touch through WhatsApp, email, or the Americast hashtag. Additionally, the importance of democracy and the power of real choices was emphasized, as was the quote from Winston Churchill that "democracy is the worst form of government except for all the other ones that have been tried." The team also reminded listeners of the importance of gift giving and introduced Quince, a brand offering high-quality fashion essentials at affordable prices.

LONG After one of the greatest political surprises in American political history, Donald Trump’s 2016 victory gave way to a controversial and consequential presidency.

We look back on the four years that were defined by staff fallouts, COVID, and an attempted insurrection. Anthony is joined by two journalists who were in the room with Trump while he was changing American politics one decision at a time.

Americast is profiling the four candidates in the race to become the next President and Vice President of the United States.

A thought leader on disinformation, Applebaum commented on current political polarization by arguing that unless you can have debates based on a commonly agreed upon set of facts, you cannot have democracy at all. Building Trust from the White House Podium with Jen Psaki

Season 3, Episode 7: Jen Psaki, the White House Press Secretary, joins ISD Director of Programs and Research Kelly McFarland and Council of Foreign Relations Fellow Jennifer Davis for the final episode of season 3. They discuss a specific problem that the press secretary faces every day: disinformation from foreign adversaries who seek to undermine American democracy. Psaki was well-placed to speak to this issue, due to her experience of a highly personalized disinformation campaign from Russian-backed actors during her time as State Department spokesperson from 2013 to 2015. In addition to the particular impact of disinformation on women in the public eye, she discusses positive strategies to counter disinformation, the role of productive partnerships, and how to build trust from the podium.

Breaking Democracy: Lies, Deception and Disinformation

With conspiracy theories and disinformation on the rise in both media and politics, is our democracy at risk? We may lose trust in society, in the institutions that inform us, and, ultimately, in the democratic process. Our sense of responsibility for the everyday information we share may diminish. Deceitful politicians may escape scrutiny by claiming that truths are false, falsehoods are true, and in any case nothing can be proved. How should we respond to these challenges?
