An Interview: Garyvee on The Breakfast Club | Why Social Media and Networking are Important Tools for Success

    enJuly 06, 2017

    Podcast Summary

    • Giving back and engaging with audienceEngage with audience, build relationships, and show gratitude for their attention to grow a successful brand or business

Giving back and engaging with your audience is crucial for building a successful brand or business. Gary Vaynerchuk, a corporate motivator, emphasized this during a conversation on The Breakfast Club podcast. He shared an example of how he gave away hundreds of copies of his book in Washington Square Park and the impact it had on his fans. Gary emphasized that people's attention is the most valuable asset in today's world, and it's essential to be grateful for it and use it effectively. He also suggested using social media to answer people's questions and engage with them on a larger scale, which can benefit not only the individual asking the question but also a larger audience. It's important to remember that gaining attention through positive actions and authentic engagement is essential to build a successful brand or business in the long run.

    • Investing in the stock market with a long-term approachInvesting in the S&P 500 for 20 years with a buy-and-hold strategy can lead to significant returns, despite market volatility. For those with limited funds or a shorter time horizon, selling items for profit may be a more feasible option.

For individuals with limited funds and time, investing in the stock market, particularly the S&P 500, can yield significant returns over long periods, despite market volatility. This strategy, known as buy-and-hold, involves investing money with the intention of keeping it invested for an extended period, such as 20 years, and avoiding the temptation to withdraw it during market downturns. The compound interest earned over this time can lead to substantial growth. However, this strategy may not be feasible for everyone due to the need for a substantial initial investment and the ability to leave the money untouched for an extended period. For those with smaller amounts to invest and a shorter time horizon, flipping or selling items for a profit, such as at flea markets or discount stores, may be a more viable option.

    • Growing Wealth Through Practical MethodsYou can grow wealth through garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, dollar stores, social media presence, and arbitrage. Dedication and effort are key, but avoid quick scams and focus on building a solid foundation.

Making significant money from a small investment can be achieved through garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, dollar stores, and arbitrage. Additionally, building a social media presence, particularly on Instagram, can lead to monetization opportunities. These methods require dedication and effort, but they are practical and effective ways to grow wealth in 2017. Younger generations are starting to recognize the importance of investing early, and even children can learn valuable business skills through simple ventures like selling homemade slime. It's essential to avoid quick scams, unproven business models, and focus on building a solid foundation for financial growth.

    • Authentic motivation is crucial for entrepreneurial successIdentify and tap into core motivations for long-term entrepreneurial success, such as a desire to innovate, create, and make a positive impact.

Authentic motivation is crucial for success in entrepreneurship. While it may be tempting to be drawn to the status symbols and external validation that come with the lifestyle, true entrepreneurs are driven by a deep love for the game and the grind. As discussed, many young people may be entering entrepreneurship as a means to impress others or achieve material possessions, but this approach is unlikely to lead to long-term success. Instead, it's essential to identify and tap into core motivations, such as a desire to innovate, create, and make a positive impact. As Gary Vaynerchuk emphasized, the journey to building a successful business is a long and challenging one, requiring dedication, hard work, and resilience. Ultimately, those who are truly passionate about the process and the potential for growth will be the ones who come out on top.

    • Expanding Horizons through Networking and EventsAttending events and networking can broaden your horizons, create valuable connections, and contribute to personal and professional growth.

Attending events and networking are crucial for personal and professional growth. The speaker shared her experience from a recent panel where she met students from diverse backgrounds and emphasized the importance of opening one's mind to new experiences and opportunities. She mentioned that networking is essential for success and that attending events, such as those offered on meetup.com, can help individuals meet motivated people and expand their network. The speaker also shared her regret of not being social during her college years and encouraged individuals to make the most of opportunities to connect with others. In essence, who you know can make a significant difference in your life, and attending events and networking can help broaden your horizons and create valuable connections.

    • Embrace your individuality and communicate effectivelyInstead of focusing on what we don't have, embrace your unique perspectives and experiences. Communicate effectively to build valuable connections and make progress towards your goals.

Everyone has unique perspectives and experiences to offer, regardless of their current situation or background. Instead of focusing on what we don't have or doubting ourselves, we should embrace our individuality and communicate effectively with others. This can lead to valuable connections and opportunities. For example, a young man named Fox, who works 50 hours a week at his aunt's corner store while pursuing his dream, emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself and focusing on your goals. He advises using every hour wisely, especially the 40 hours outside of his full-time job, to make progress on his project, Point Motion, which aims to help children with autism through motion control technology. By owning our perspectives and communicating openly, we can turn our passions into reality and make a positive impact on the world.

    • Focus on social media for effective iPhone game marketingBuild organic presence, engage with users, use influencer marketing, allocate marketing budget, and avoid spamming on social media platforms for iPhone game promotion.

Acquiring customers is crucial for any business, regardless of investment or effort put in. To market a new iPhone game effectively, the speaker suggests focusing on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. Building a presence in these communities and engaging with users organically before promoting the game is essential. Additionally, influencer marketing on Instagram and Facebook ads can be cost-effective ways to reach a larger audience. However, it's important to note that authentic engagement and genuine relationships are key to successful marketing. The speaker also emphasized that having a budget for marketing, even if it's small, can still make a significant impact. Lastly, the speaker warned against spamming or inappropriate behavior when trying to promote the game in online communities.

    • Staying true to our hustle means focusing on our own prioritiesFocus on personal goals and calibrate responses to life's challenges based on what feels right, rather than societal pressures.

The way we think about handling life's challenges and staying true to our hustle is by focusing on our own priorities and not getting too caught up in what others think. Audrey, a caller on the GaryVee podcast, shared her concerns about maintaining her drive in the face of life's obstacles and societal pressures. GaryVee's response was that it ultimately comes down to our mindset. He suggested that those who are overly concerned with what others think are more likely to let their hustle die down. Instead, we should focus on our own goals and calibrate our responses to life's curveballs based on what feels right for us. James, a 16-year-old caller, asked for advice on pursuing entrepreneurship and building a successful business. GaryVee encouraged him to put in the work and start early, emphasizing that success takes time and dedication. Overall, the key takeaway is that staying true to our passions and hustle requires a strong sense of self and a focus on our own goals, rather than getting bogged down by external pressures and expectations.

    • Focus on becoming a practitionerEmbrace hands-on experience, ignore distractions, and stay dedicated to your goals for success

Success in any field requires hands-on experience and dedication. Gary Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of becoming a practitioner, whether it's running a Facebook ad, playing basketball, or getting into better shape. He encourages individuals to focus on their own progress and not be swayed by external opinions. This mindset, according to Gary, is the key to success. He shares his personal experience of disregarding distractions and staying focused on his goals, even when surrounded by people who don't share the same drive. Ultimately, the proof of one's success will be evident in the future, and the best advice Gary can offer is to remember that you will eventually die, so make the most of your time and effort.

    • Making the most of precious timeValue your time, take risks, and seize opportunities, even if it means adjusting your schedule or saying no to some opportunities.

Life is precious and should not be wasted. As discussed, everyone is constantly pondering, debating, and regretting, but at the end of the day, it's important to be grateful and make the most of the time we have. A great example of this is the experience of working with international superstars Gwyneth Paltrow, Will.I.Am, and Jessica Alba on Planet Ave, a venture where they mentor and invest in apps. Despite being the "4th wheel," the speaker found it to be a valuable experience due to his background in start-up investing. The opportunity to work with these successful individuals and have access to large amounts of funding was a breakthrough moment, even if it meant adjusting his schedule. Ultimately, the speaker encourages listeners to understand the value of their time and to take risks, even if it means saying no to opportunities that may seem appealing but don't align with their goals.
