    en-usJune 14, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Model turns passion for social justice into modeling careerDetermined model uses her platform to advocate for social justice and sustainability, challenging industry norms and inspiring change.

Antares Gennari, a model and co-founder of Role Model Management, used her unique perspective and experiences to pursue a career in modeling as a means to gain a platform and speak up about important issues. Her unconventional entry into the modeling world, driven by her passion for social justice and sustainability, led her to challenge the industry's focus on glamour and instead prioritize ethics and collective positive change. Through her agency, she provides a voice for models to advocate for their beliefs and inspires listeners on her podcast, Hate Change, to embrace curiosity and positivity. Antares' story highlights the power of determination and using one's platform to make a difference.

    • Personal experiences of power imbalance and mistreatment in the fashion industryThe fashion industry can be challenging with long hours, uncertainty, and financial instability, but issues of power imbalance and mistreatment, including sexual harassment, are unfortunately common. Speaking up through movements like Me Too can help bring attention to these issues and promote change towards greater transparency, respect, and fairness.

The fashion industry can be much more challenging than it appears on the surface, with long hours, uncertainty, and financial instability. Additionally, issues of power imbalance and mistreatment, such as sexual harassment, are unfortunately common. The speaker shares her personal experience of being sexually harassed by a photographer before she was signed, and how she felt ashamed and powerless. However, she eventually found the courage to speak up through the Me Too movement and help bring attention to the issue. The speaker is determined to be part of the change in the industry, advocating for greater transparency, respect, and fairness for models.

    • Sharing experiences of harm empowers individuals and prevents future harmSpeaking up about past harm can lead to acceptance, healing, and positive change for individuals and prevent similar situations from happening to others.

Speaking up about past experiences of harm or wrongdoing, especially when it comes to issues like sexual harassment or exploitation, is an empowering and important step. It not only allows individuals to claim their stories as their own, but also helps prevent similar situations from happening to others. This was highlighted in a conversation between two women, one of whom had kept quiet about her experience with a predatory photographer for years, and the other who had recently come forward with her own story and was advocating for change. They connected over their shared experiences and the realization that the photographer had affected other women as well. It's important to remember that it's not always the victim's fault, and that owning and sharing one's story can lead to acceptance, healing, and ultimately, positive change.

    • Keeping past experiences secret can harm mental healthSpeaking up about past experiences, whether for personal healing or entrepreneurial change, can lead to growth and positive impact.

Keeping secrets about past experiences, especially those that involve trauma or shame, can be detrimental to one's mental health. Speaking up about these experiences, whether to oneself or to trusted individuals, can lead to healing and growth. This is a common issue that affects people of all ages and backgrounds, and it's important to remember that one is not alone in dealing with such experiences. From an entrepreneurial perspective, recognizing the need for change in industries or areas where one feels disempowered can lead to the creation of businesses that aim to make a positive impact. Role Model Management, for instance, was started to address the frustration with the modeling industry and provide a platform for models who want to use their voices for good and work with brands that align with their values. The agency's success is a testament to the fact that there is a demand for such change and that it's possible to make a difference by taking action.

    • Revolutionizing the modeling industryFounders prioritize authenticity, vulnerability, and self-care, fostering a supportive community and encouraging models to use their platforms for positive change

The modeling industry is ripe for change, and the founders of [Your Agency Name] are making a difference by focusing on models as role models and advocates for positive change. Their unique perspective, rooted in their experience as models, allows them to see modeling as an opportunity to make a difference in the world. They prioritize authenticity, vulnerability, and self-care, challenging the long-held belief that being a model means sacrificing personal well-being. By fostering a supportive community and encouraging models to use their platforms for good, [Your Agency Name] is revolutionizing the industry and inspiring a new generation of models to be more than just pretty faces.

    • The Cost of Perfection in ModelingThe modeling industry's focus on perfection can negatively impact models' mental and physical health. It's essential to prioritize models' well-being, health, and happiness, and promote authentic representation in media and advertising.

The ideal of perfection presented in modeling, particularly through media and social media, can come at a great cost to models' mental and physical health. This imbalance between health and happiness is not sustainable and can lead to widespread unhappiness within the modeling industry. Moreover, the models portrayed in media and advertising often do not represent the average person, leading to a disconnect between reality and representation. It's essential to recognize that models are human beings and that the industry needs to prioritize their well-being, health, and happiness. With the advent of COVID-19, there have been shifts in the industry, such as brands sending products to models for at-home photoshoots, which may lead to more authentic and relatable representations of people. Overall, it's crucial to acknowledge the importance of promoting healthy and happy models and encouraging authentic representation in media and advertising.

    • Modeling industry prioritizes authenticity, transparency, and diversityThe modeling industry is shifting towards authenticity, transparency, and diversity, with a focus on representing women and men of various sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Industry leaders also advocate for a more optimistic approach to climate change, emphasizing the opportunities for positive change rather than fear.

The modeling industry is evolving to prioritize authenticity, transparency, and diversity, reflecting the changing needs and desires of consumers. This shift is seen in the increasing representation of women and men of various sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Moreover, the industry leader we spoke with, who started her modeling agency to change the world, has become a climate optimist. She believes that the way we approach climate change needs to change from a fear-based perspective to one that is optimistic and encouraging. She argues that humans will always address urgent issues that impact them personally first, and that focusing solely on the fear of climate change may lead to depression and anxiety. Instead, she suggests emphasizing the exciting opportunities for positive change and providing clear actions people can take right now.

    • Embrace a climate optimistic approachInstead of focusing on fear and negativity, embrace a positive mindset and look for ways to improve to address climate change. Science and technology can help us reverse global warming, and happiness hormones can fuel our motivation.

Instead of focusing on fear and negativity to drive action towards addressing climate change, we should embrace a climate optimistic approach. This means acknowledging past mistakes, but then moving forward with a positive mindset and looking for ways to improve. We have the science and technology to reverse global warming, and it's important to start implementing these solutions now. Happiness hormones like oxytocin, dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin can help fuel our engines and keep us motivated on this long journey towards a better future. Instead of motivating ourselves and others with the negative, let's focus on the positive and enjoy the trip every step of the way.

    • Focus on Positive OutcomesDuring challenging times, focus on the positive outcomes and the desire for a better life to stay motivated and inspired to make a difference.

While it's natural to be motivated by fear and negativity, it's essential to also focus on the positive outcomes and the future we can strive for. During challenging times, such as the lockdown, it's important to remember that making positive changes can lead to a better future for ourselves and future generations. Instead of being motivated by the fear of negative consequences, we should be motivated by the desire for a better life. Additionally, having a clear positive goal can help us stay motivated and focused, even when faced with obstacles. Starting with the intention to change the world, no matter how small our actions may seem, can make a significant impact. Everyone has the power to make a difference, and focusing on the positive outcomes can help us stay motivated and inspired to continue making a positive impact.

    • Lessons from a Father on Making a DifferenceThough we can't fix all world's problems, small positive actions daily and supporting each other can make a difference.

While we may not be able to fix all the world's problems, we can make a difference by changing things a little bit every day. This was a valuable lesson shared by the speaker during a conversation with his son. The speaker also emphasized the importance of supporting each other in making a positive impact, as one negative action can have a larger effect than several positive ones. The speaker's words resonated deeply with the podcast host, who shared how he reached out to the speaker after discovering an interview with him and was pleasantly surprised when the speaker agreed to be on his podcast. The host expressed his gratitude for the experience and the friendship that had formed between them. This conversation serves as a reminder that every small action counts and that we should continue to work together towards creating a better world.

    • Believing in the power of optimism and human ability to make a differenceStay optimistic, believe in our ability to make a difference, and cherish simple moments in life.

That despite the challenges of climate change and the complexities of finding solutions, we should remain optimistic. Mo Gawdat, a climate optimist, believes in the power of both nature and humanity to make a difference. Each person has the ability to contribute to positive change, no matter how small. After dealing with these issues, Mo looks forward to simple joys like having another cup of coffee. He encourages everyone to slow down and make time for happiness in their lives. So, let's remember to stay optimistic, believe in our ability to make a difference, and cherish the simple moments in life.
