    enJanuary 03, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Favorite Entrepreneur Event of the Year: Camp MFM Basketball WeekendBen and Sean's unique networking event for entrepreneurs at a winery included basketball games, board games, and connections that went beyond traditional methods.

The Camp MFM recap episode, where Ben and Sean organized a basketball weekend for entrepreneurs, turned out to be the favorite episode of the year according to a Twitter poll. The event took place at a winery in North Carolina and included a basketball trainer, as well as entrepreneurs like Mr. Beast and Hassan Minhaj. The weekend was filled with basketball games, board games, and a chance for attendees to connect with each other in a more authentic way than traditional networking events. Ben shared that he enjoys meeting new people and that the podcast was originally started as a way to do so, but he dislikes the traditional methods of networking. The Camp MFM recap episode was a unique and successful way to bring together interesting individuals and create a summer camp-like experience for grown-ups.

    • Connecting through shared interests leads to personal growthSurrounding yourself with ambitious, successful individuals and using the right tools can lead to personal growth and business success.

Bringing together like-minded individuals with shared interests and a desire to learn from each other can lead to meaningful connections and personal growth. The speaker shared his experience of organizing a basketball getaway where attendees were selected based on their love for basketball, their great personality, and their ability to teach something valuable. The event brought together people from various backgrounds, including billionaires, entertainers, and former NSA agents. The speaker believes it was a life-changing experience for everyone involved, as they were inspired by each other's success and saw themselves as equals. The use of HubSpot's customer platform for growing businesses was also highlighted as a solution to managing multiple software tools and having a single source of truth. Overall, the event and the platform serve as reminders that surrounding oneself with ambitious and successful individuals and having the right tools can lead to personal growth and business success.

    • Creating a special and curious environment for learningInvite natural curiosity, make everyone feel equal, and immerse them in a unique experience to foster openness and connection among individuals

Creating a special, curious, and immersive environment is key to fostering openness and connection among individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or achievements. By making people feel like they're part of something bigger than themselves, inviting those with natural curiosity, and providing an unavoidable immersion, you can bring everyone back to an equal footing and encourage learning from each other. The weekend described in the discussion was a perfect example of this, with its lack of egos, successful people learning from each other, and the special and curious atmosphere that was created.

    • Being authentic and staying true to oneselfAuthenticity and staying true to oneself, even if it means breaking rules, can lead to successful relationships, collaborations, and remarkable achievements.

Creating a genuine and authentic environment, starting from the top down, plays a significant role in building successful relationships and collaborations. MrBeast, a highly successful YouTuber, exemplifies this by being true to himself and focusing on his craft, even if it means disregarding conventional rules and norms. His intensity and determination, coupled with his easy-going personality, have allowed him to amass a massive following and achieve great success. Despite his young age and lack of knowledge in certain areas outside of YouTube culture, he continues to learn and improve by seeking out experts and researchers. His unique approach to work and disregard for traditional work weeks and hours further sets him apart. Overall, being authentic and staying true to oneself, while also being open to learning and growth, can lead to remarkable achievements and impactful collaborations.

    • Two Individuals, Two Approaches to SuccessSuccess can manifest through different approaches, but having a clear vision and the drive to execute it is crucial.

Success often comes in different forms and packages. The first individual discussed was carefree and seemingly uninterested in rules, yet highly focused when engaged in his pursuits. The second individual, a wealthy business owner, worked only a few weeks a month but maintained an intense focus when creating content for his successful YouTube channel. Both individuals demonstrated an intense focus and high level of leverage in their respective fields, despite their vastly different approaches to life and work. During a visit to the second individual's production facility, it became clear that everyone there was singularly focused on creating the best videos possible. The individual, known as Mr. Beast, started with no budget and created spectacles to gain attention, eventually investing millions into each video production. The most admirable quality about him was his clear vision and entrepreneurial spirit, which was shared by almost everyone in his team. In conclusion, success can come in various forms, and it's essential to understand that individuals have different approaches to achieving it. Whether it's through a carefree attitude or intense focus, what matters most is having a clear vision and the drive to execute it.

    • The Price of Ambition: Obsession and RisksHaving a big vision and being completely obsessed with it can lead to success, but also comes with risks and requires sophistication and company building skills.

Having a wildly ambitious vision and being totally obsessed with it are important for success, but they come with a price. During a conversation, it was mentioned that only a few people in the room could claim to have such ambitious goals and be completely obsessed with them. The speaker, Mister B, aims to be a billionaire YouTube creator with a billion followers and make 1 trillion dollars, and also wants to be the richest man, most famous person, and president. While some people might find this impressive, others think it could be a downfall. The speaker suggests that most people don't have the willingness or ability to give every hour, every dollar, and every ounce of their soul to their ambition. Mister B's obsession could potentially lead him to great success, but it could also lead to becoming an addict or ending up on the street. The speaker also mentions that Mister B was incredibly naive about business and needs to learn more, and that his hiring and company building practices need improvement. In summary, having a big vision and being totally obsessed with it can lead to success, but it also comes with risks and requires a certain level of sophistication and company building skills.

    • Age is just a number in the pursuit of successSuccess can be achieved at any age through determination and unique approaches. Admire those with raw ambition, but also value wisdom and balance.

Ambition and determination, no matter the age, can lead to significant success. At 24, becoming a CEO of a company with revenue and employees was an impressive feat for the speaker, but he recognized that the younger individual he was comparing himself to was also making progress at his own pace and with his own unique approach. The brute force method of repeatedly going all in and not holding back can help overcome mistakes and lead to success, even if it's later in one's career. However, it's important to remember that different people define success in various ways, and what works for one person may not work for another. The speaker admired individuals like Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos for their raw ambition, but he also valued individuals like Naval Ravikant for their wisdom and balance. Ultimately, it's essential to be authentic and understand that everyone has their unique path to success.

    • Respecting and admiring diverse life goalsAppreciate the uniqueness of everyone's journey and celebrate their achievements, regardless of their focus on personal growth, relationships, or traditional success.

Everyone's journey and goals in life are unique and valid, regardless of their shape or size. It's essential to respect and admire others' play styles and dreams, even if they differ from our own. Some people prioritize traditional success and wealth, while others focus on personal growth or relationships. It's essential to appreciate the diversity of these approaches and celebrate each other's achievements. Additionally, it's important to remember that ambition and drive come in various forms and should not be judged based on their size or perceived importance. Ultimately, it's about finding meaning and fulfillment in our pursuits and supporting each other along the way.

    • Anonymous NBA team owner shares insights at retreatMeeting an anonymous NBA team owner led to thought-provoking conversations about online personas and offline identities, challenging assumptions and fostering respect and camaraderie.

During a weekend retreat, the speaker met an anonymous person, known online as Commodore, who had raised millions to buy an NBA team but chose to remain anonymous in person. This unusual situation led to a deep and meaningful conversation between the two, where they discussed various topics without revealing their real identities. The speaker found this experience fascinating, as it challenged his assumptions about online personas and the blurred lines between online and offline identities. Despite the anonymity, there was a sense of respect and camaraderie among the group, who accepted Commodore as he was. The retreat also featured unique experiences like a private chef and custom jerseys, adding to the overall memorable experience.

    • Unexpected gifts and experiences bring joyUnexpected gifts and experiences, even for the wealthy, can bring joy and create memorable moments. Being prepared with a compelling story can enhance interactions.

Receiving unexpected gifts or experiences, no matter how wealthy someone is, can bring joy and excitement. The authors were thrilled with the free shoes they received and were impressed by the Duke basketball tour, which gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the practice facility and the opportunity to hear stories from former players and coaches. Emile Jefferson, a former player leading the tour, saved the day by sharing compelling stories about Coach K, making the experience even more memorable. It's essential to have a story ready to share when asked common questions, as it can make the interaction more engaging and memorable for both parties. The authors learned valuable lessons and gained unique experiences during their visit, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and open to new opportunities.

    • Understanding the power of body language in leadershipEffective leaders pay attention to non-verbal cues and adjust their communication accordingly to project confidence and avoid appearing desperate.

Effective leadership involves being aware of and addressing non-verbal communication and body language. In the story shared, a basketball coach used a visual display of the speaker's own body language to teach him the importance of projecting confidence and not appearing as a beggar. This moment of realization had a significant impact on the speaker's leadership abilities. Additionally, the speaker appreciated the host's ability to prioritize and focus on the essentials, even when some aspects of the event were less than ideal. The importance of this lesson was underscored by the overall success of the event, which was marked by great people, perfect facilities, and a productive podcast recording session. In essence, the story highlights the importance of being mindful of non-verbal communication, as well as the value of focusing on the essentials and creating an environment that fosters growth and productivity.

    • Executing elements perfectly creates unique experiencesWell-executed events leave lasting impressions, even when some aspects can be replicated, by combining unique attendees and achievements.

Executing the main things perfectly is key to creating special experiences, even if some details can be repeated. Sean's recent event was a success due to its well-executed elements, and although some aspects could be copied, the unique combination of attendees and their achievements made it unforgettable. Moving forward, the plan is to host smaller, exclusive events for a select group of individuals and larger, less exclusive retreats for entrepreneurs who have made their first million. These events will aim to provide an immaculate vibe and experience, with the smaller events focusing on intimacy and exclusivity, and the larger retreats offering a broader experience for a larger audience. The success of Sean's recent event has inspired others, including the CMO of HubSpot, to support and invest in similar experiences.

    • Profound conversations with successful individuals revealed common themes of insecurities, family, and humility.Successful individuals acknowledged their fears, prioritized family, and remained humble despite achievements. Personal growth, seeking therapy, and limiting alcohol were identified as areas for improvement.

The speaker had profound conversations with remarkable individuals, and they all shared common themes. They acknowledged their insecurities and fears, strived to raise good kids, and remained humble despite their success. Most of them did not drink alcohol and were transparent about their finances. A notable exception was Mr. Beast, who had a personal "DoorDash" runner available 24/7. The speaker was inspired by their resilience, transparency, and determination to improve. Personal growth, family, and humility were the recurring themes. The speaker plans to bring a positive mindset to being a family man, seek therapy, drink less alcohol, and honor loved ones. They were all "dorks" in the speaker's eyes, but their stories of overcoming odds and staying grounded were truly inspiring.

    • The value of full investment in goalsSuccessful people prioritize their goals, invest time, money, and energy, and remain dedicated to their pursuit of excellence.

Successful people, whether they're YouTubers or athletes, value their time and put every hour, every dollar, and every ounce of their soul into their wild ambitions. This was a revelation for the speaker, who had never met anyone who invested so fully in their goals. He shared a story about a man who would go to great lengths to play Settlers of Catan, even having someone watch his back 24/7. This man's work ethic was legendary, and he reinvested everything into making the best videos possible. The speaker was inspired by this unwavering dedication to excellence and realized that greatness often comes from a simple, matter-of-fact approach to achieving one's goals, no matter what it takes. He also shared a story about Kobe Bryant, who was known for his legendary work ethic and was often at the gym hours before practice started. These stories underscored the importance of prioritizing one's goals and investing fully in their pursuit.

    • Kobe's Personal Touch: Remembering NamesSmall actions, like remembering names, can leave a lasting impression and expand one's influence beyond their primary domain.

Kobe Bryant stood out not just for his exceptional basketball skills, but also for his remarkable ability to connect with people on a personal level. He remembered names, asked questions, and made an effort to make an impression. This simple act left a lasting impact on those he encountered, creating a memorable story that could be shared with others. Kobe's dedication to remembering names was a deliberate strategy to make a lasting impression and expand his influence beyond the basketball court. This story serves as a reminder that even small actions can have a significant impact on people's lives. Another notable trait shared by Kobe and the "beast" figure mentioned was their unwavering commitment to their respective passions. This "kamikaze commitment" drove them to excel in their fields and leave a lasting impact on their audiences.

    • Creating successful YouTube content requires technical skills and a financial investmentTo succeed on YouTube, combine creativity, technical skills, and business acumen, and be willing to invest time and money to constantly improve and reinvest in your channel.

Creating successful content on YouTube requires a combination of technical knowledge and a relentless commitment to reinvesting time and money into the channel. The technical aspects include crafting a compelling title and thumbnail, hooking viewers in the first 10 seconds, visually stimulating content, and introducing twists to keep attention. However, these skills alone are not enough to outpace competitors who are equally dedicated and willing to invest heavily in their channel. The individual in the discussion exemplifies this strategy, turning small sponsorships into large deals by insisting on higher payments and then reinvesting the profits back into the channel. This "kamikaze commitment" strategy is awe-inspiring but may not be suitable for everyone, as it requires a significant time and financial investment that not everyone is willing or able to make. Ultimately, success on YouTube requires a unique blend of creativity, technical skills, and business acumen, as well as a willingness to constantly push the boundaries and reinvest in the channel.

    • Defining personal successInstead of comparing ourselves to others or feeling pressured to conform to societal expectations, we should focus on defining personal success based on our own goals and priorities, and be satisfied with 'good enough'.

It's important to define what success means to us personally, and not compare ourselves to others or feel pressured to conform to societal expectations. The speaker shares an experience of attending a conference where they felt inferior due to their perceived lack of success compared to others. They felt envy and guilt, but realized that they didn't have to play the game of striving for more wealth or status just because others were doing it. Instead, they could focus on their own goals and priorities, and be satisfied with "good enough." The speaker also suggests that envy and comparisons can be harmful, and it's better to approach new experiences as an opportunity to explore different options and discover what truly resonates with us. As the speaker left the conference, they recognized that they could reframe their perspective and approach new experiences with curiosity and openness, rather than envy and guilt.

    • Learning from others' storiesInstead of comparing ourselves unfavorably, we can learn from others' experiences and focus on our unique journey.

Instead of feeling envious or intimidated by others' success, we can use their stories as learning opportunities. When we encounter situations where we feel insignificant or uninteresting in comparison to others, it's important to remember that everyone has a unique story to tell. The speaker shared an experience of feeling small in a group setting, but then realized that everyone has their own struggles and accomplishments. Another example he shared was of a friend who kept losing money gambling and would keep going back for more, despite the losses. In both cases, the speaker found humor and lightness in the situations, which helped them put things into perspective. Overall, the takeaway is to focus on our own journey and learn from others, rather than comparing ourselves unfavorably.

    • Reflecting on reaching a milestoneAcknowledging progress, no matter the size, is essential for maintaining motivation and positivity. Comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy, but it's important to remember everyone's journey is unique.

Reaching milestones, no matter how small or large, can bring a mix of emotions. During a particular weekend, we reached 100,000 subscribers on our channel. While celebrating this achievement, we compared our growth to that of another successful creator, Jimmy, who was adding millions of subscribers per month. Initially, we felt inadequate, but soon realized the importance of acknowledging our progress. The episode became a self-indulgent yet enjoyable debriefing session, filled with reflection, humor, and camaraderie. We acknowledged our accomplishments, made fun of ourselves, and even poked fun at others. Our goal was not to be hard on anyone, but rather to share the experience and look forward to the next milestone.

“Anybody I know who really makes the most out of live experiences, judges an event not by the content, but by the potential connections.” Click to Tweet

Events have the power to deliver a disproportionate amount of value for the amount investment made. Almost every time someone has helped me overcome an obstacle, opened a door of opportunity, or made a profound introduction, it’s been someone that I originally connected with at a live event. Investing your time, money, and energy into attending events is an absolutely critical part of building new relationships and growing your network. But for so many of us, events are a serious pain point.

In this episode I offer you an event networking guide that anyone can use to maximize the ROI of attending events, with particular tips and tricks for all you introverts out there. Because growth begins at the end of your comfort zone...

    129: Celebrate the Triggers

    129: Celebrate the Triggers

    #129: Celebrate the Triggers

In this mindset episode, we are talking about the triggers.  The triggers others experience from our words, messages, and posts, and the triggers we create in others.  The triggers tell us a lot about ourselves and about others.  The triggers are gifts, opportunities for us to learn and grow and opportunities to see that our messages are landing.  The women in The Radical Responsibility Mastermind are at the point where they are openly sharing their stories and this takes GUTS!  I will continue to honour their courage and vulnerability that it takes to share their stories with the world.  Are they causing ripples or triggers?  Yes they are and I am so proud of them for showing up and sharing their stories to impact others!   Celebrate the triggers…You are on the right path.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    1. When your message triggers someone, ie. They send you a message, a text, a hurtful comment or voice mail, STOP and take a BREATHE. Just because someone says something doesn’t mean you need to respond.  Taking Radical Responsibility means we choose how we respond.
    2. Don’t take it personally. It is not about you at all! What triggers someone is all about them, just like whatever triggers you are ALL on YOU!
    3. Focus on the intention as to why you are sharing your story or your message. If you are sharing from a space of love, give back or supporting someone else then great.  If you are sharing from a space of blame, finger-pointing, or sharing from someone else’s view, then you are not in the right.  That is the wrong space to share the story from.
    4. Triggers give us the opportunity to see what has to be healed, what is unresolved, and where we need to do more work. Triggers seriously are gifts so treat them as a gift. When one happens, stop and ask yourself what is this trying to teach me?
    5. Don’t stop sharing your message because of your fear of what others will say. Someone somewhere is praying for the solutions you have learned on your journey.  Share from a space of respect and love, and share to continue to support others.  Let the triggers land!
