Audiobook Mixtape: Gift Ideas from the Ologists’ Brains

    en-usDecember 18, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • The Transformative Power of New Experiences and KnowledgeExploring new experiences and knowledge, as found in books, can lead to unexpected benefits and a fresh perspective on life

Just like adding more coffee to a lukewarm cup requires more creamer, putting off projects or experiences can lead to unexpected benefits. In this episode of Ologies, Alie Ward introduces listeners to various authorologists and their books, encouraging listeners to consider the wisdom, humor, and potential life-changing insights found within the pages. By sharing an excerpt from Dale Mollfinger's "Cabinology," Alie highlights the transformative power of cabin life and the enduring impact it can have on an individual's perspective. This episode not only serves as an introduction to some of the show's previous guests but also emphasizes the value of seeking out new experiences and knowledge. So, whether you're looking for inspiration or a cozy read, consider picking up a book and allowing it to expand your horizons.

    • Embracing simple pleasures and personal growthDesigner's love for cabins inspires him, doctors lack sleep education, self-education and personal growth are crucial in sleep and alcohol recovery

Nature and simple experiences drew the author to cabins 40 years ago, and this love for cabins has continued as he's designed over 50 of them. Meanwhile, many physicians receive minimal education about sleep in medical school, making it a common problem they encounter. Sleep expert Chris Winter encourages individuals to educate themselves about sleep and disregard misconceptions, while cocktail expert Matthew Bianconnello shares how he healed his relationship with alcohol through mixology. These anecdotes illustrate the importance of embracing simple pleasures, self-education, and personal growth in different aspects of life.

    • Exploring the art of mixology and new ingredientsDiscover the joy of mixology through creativity with ingredients and the exploration of new experiences.

The art of mixology, as demonstrated by Matthew Bianconnello in his book Ooma Cocktails, is simpler than it seems and lies in the individual's creative use of ingredients. The passion for mixology is ignited through the exploration of new ingredients and experiences, like visiting farmers markets or meeting new guests. Pumpkins, for instance, are not just for Halloween but a source of inspiration for cooking and cuisine, as evidenced by Anne Copeland's book, Pumpkin. The connection between nature and food is further emphasized in Wild LA, a book that showcases the diverse flora and fauna in Los Angeles. These books inspire and remind us to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, whether it's through a well-crafted cocktail or the discovery of new wildlife in our own backyards.

    • Bats and Snakes Thrive in Unexpected Urban SpacesBats adapt to city life at football games and snakes are misunderstood urban dwellers. Both deserve appreciation and scientific study to deepen our understanding of their urban habitats.

Wildlife, including bats and snakes, can be found thriving in unexpected urban environments. Miguel's research on bats at a football game highlights their adaptability to city life, while David Stein's book, "Secrets of Snakes," aims to dispel myths and provide scientific insights into these often misunderstood creatures. Both authors encourage appreciation for these animals and the importance of scientific inquiry to deepen our understanding of the natural world. The urban landscape is a patchwork of tame and wild spaces, and both bats and snakes have found ways to thrive in it.

    • Exploring the Fascinating Worlds of Snakes and BatsSteen's 'Secrets of Snakes' delves into the science behind snake behaviors, while Tuttle's 'The Secret Lives of Bats' shares tales of bat discoveries and adventures, broadening our understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

Both David Steen's "Secrets of Snakes" and Merlin Tuttle's "The Secret Lives of Bats" offer fascinating insights into the natural world, appealing to different interests. For those drawn to reptiles, Steen's book explores the science behind snake behaviors. Meanwhile, for those captivated by mammals, Tuttle's book shares tales of bat discoveries and adventures, revealing their unique characteristics and importance. Tuttle's memoir promises a lifetime of thrilling experiences, from encounters with various animals and cultures to scientific discoveries on every continent. So, whether you're intrigued by snakes or bats, these authors' works offer a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

    • From shelter barking to movie star trainingA cynologist and animal trainer, Brandon MacMillan, transformed his perspective on shelter dogs and proved their trainability by rescuing and starring a rottweiler named Raven in movies, advocating for their potential in the industry, and helping families find suitable pets.

Brandon MacMillan, a cynologist and animal trainer, has dedicated his life to rescuing dogs, inspired by the staggering statistic that over a million shelter dogs in the US are euthanized each year. He shares his story in his book "Lucky Dog Lessons: Train Your Dog in 7 Days." MacMillan was initially annoyed by the barking from a local shelter, but after learning about the high euthanasia rates, he saw these dogs in a new light. He rescued a rottweiler named Raven and trained her to become a movie star, proving that shelter dogs are just as trainable as those with known bloodlines. MacMillan's success led him to advocate for rescue dogs in the industry and help families find suitable shelter dogs for their homes. The experience changed his life, and he continues to champion for the potential of these "hidden treasures" with untapped intelligence and loyalty.

    • Understanding Different RelationshipsEffective communication, compromise, and understanding are essential for building strong relationships with cats, partners, and even criminal justice systems.

Our relationships with cats and humans require different approaches. According to felinologist Dr. Michael Delgado, cats don't seek the same level of training and stability as dogs. Instead, training cats involves maximizing our influence and compromising on the end result. On the other hand, when it comes to healthier habits, our partners can be our greatest allies. In the book "Love Me Slender" by Dr. Ben Karas and Dr. Thomas Bradbury, they emphasize the potential of our partners to support us in our health journey, making it more accessible and achievable. Meanwhile, in the criminal justice field, it's important to remember that media portrayals can be sensationalized. Dr. Kallie Renison, co-author of "Introduction to Criminal Justice," encourages a nuanced understanding of crime and the criminal justice system. Overall, whether it's our feline friends or our human partners, effective communication, compromise, and understanding are key to building strong, fulfilling relationships.

    • Exploring the Impacts of Criminal Justice, Health, Aging, Sports Psychology, and Body ImageThis book explores the complexities of the criminal justice system, aging, health, sports psychology, and body image through real-life stories and scientific research, emphasizing the importance of questioning common beliefs and considering evidence.

The criminal justice system and the human experience are intricately connected. The book "Criminal Justice, Systems, Diversity, and Change" provides real-life accounts of individuals whose lives have been impacted by the criminal justice system. These individuals, including victims, witnesses, and offenders, have long-lasting involvement with the system. Meanwhile, in the realm of health and aging, biogerontologist Dr. Caleb Finch's research highlights the mystery of aging and the importance of considering the level of certainty and evidence when understanding complex scientific theories. In the area of sports psychology, Dr. Sari Shepherd challenges common misconceptions about weight loss, daily training, and nutrition. Lastly, Dr. Renee Engelen's work on body image in her book "Beauty Sick" sheds light on the detrimental effects of cultural obsession with appearance on girls and women. These insights demonstrate the far-reaching impacts of various systems and the importance of questioning common beliefs.

    • Excessive focus on women's appearance leads to beauty sicknessRecognize value beyond physical appearance, shift focus outward, question self-objectification, and strive for a world free of appearance-based women objectification.

Our culture's excessive focus on women's appearance contributes to a pervasive issue called beauty sickness. This issue can negatively impact women of all ages by tying their emotional energy to their physical appearance and making it harder for them to see their own worth beyond it. Beauty sickness is reinforced by societal messages and self-objectification. To break free from this malaise, we need to shift our focus outward and recognize the value of our actions, thoughts, and being beyond physical appearance. Additionally, understanding the power of storytelling and its ancient roots can help us navigate the complexities of identity in emerging technologies like virtual reality. As we continue to explore the world and its narratives, it's essential to question the stories we tell ourselves and strive for a world where women are not objectified based on their appearance.

    • Ancient Egypt's Queen Nitokris and the Complexity of the UnknownExploring the legends of ancient Egypt and the mysteries of quantum physics reveals the richness and complexity of the world, challenging our understanding and defying simple explanations.

The world, whether it be ancient Egypt or the subatomic realm of quantum physics, is full of complex and intriguing stories and phenomena that challenge our understanding and defy simple explanations. In ancient Egypt, the legend of Queen Nitokris, despite lacking concrete evidence, resonates with the stories of other documented female rulers, showcasing their political intrigue, power struggles, and the challenges they faced in a male-dominated society. Similarly, in the realm of quantum physics, the behavior of atoms and subatomic particles defies our everyday logic and understanding, revealing a world that is both familiar and unfathomably complex. These stories, whether based in history or the realm of the very small, remind us of the richness and complexity of the world around us and the importance of questioning and seeking to understand the unexplained.

    • Existential Risks to Humanity: Quantum Physics and the UniverseAwareness of potential existential risks from quantum physics and the universe is crucial for human flourishing, including nuclear war, pandemics, and artificial intelligence.

Despite the peace and progress we've made as a species, there are still existential risks that threaten the future of humanity. Quantum physics, which explains the behavior of the smallest particles, seems to contradict our everyday experiences, leaving us with questions about its applicability to larger objects and human beings. Meanwhile, the universe itself may face various apocalypses, as astronomers continue to explore the possibilities. Phil Torres, an expert in existential risk, emphasizes that despite the historical decline in violence and conflict, there are still significant threats to human flourishing. These include nuclear war, pandemics, and artificial intelligence, among others. It's important to be aware of these risks and work towards mitigating them, even as we enjoy the relative peace and prosperity of the present.

    • Living with Existential Risks and Embracing LifeEmbrace life's uncertainty, make the most of the present, and consider writing a book during the holidays or winter days. Experts warn of high likelihood of global disasters, but focus on the present and tell your story.

We live in a time of significant risks, some of which could lead to human extinction or a major setback for civilization. Nuclear weapons, climate change, global biodiversity loss, pandemics, molecular and nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence are just a few of the existential risks we face. Experts estimate that the likelihood of a global disaster occurring in the foreseeable future is high. However, it's essential to remember that life is unpredictable, and we should make the most of the present moment. The holidays and winter days are a wonderful time to read, learn, and be inspired. If you've been thinking about writing a book, now might be the time to start. As Adam Becker advised, "the only way that I'm gonna get through this is if I plan it, and then just only pay attention to whatever is in front of me because I can't write 90,000 words, but I can write 600 words a day. And if I do that for a while, eventually, I'll have 90,000 words." So, embrace the beauty and the uncertainty of life and tell your story. They’re gorgeous. They’re picky moms, and tremendous flirts. They are sparkly. And they drink blood. We hopped on the line with mosquito researcher, medical entomologist, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officers, and Culicidologist, Dr. Fhallon Ware-Gilmore to chat about mozzies. Why do skeeters bite you, specifically? Which ones should we watch out for? Why do they make high-pitched sounds? WHAT DO THEIR HELL MOUTHS LOOK LIKE? And how can I learn to love them? But also, how can I keep them away from me? Scream in your date's face and drink blood, if you’re a mosquito, because things are about to heat up. Next week: we’ll cover diseases and repellents, just for you.

Genocidology (CRIMES OF ATROCITY) with Dirk Moses

Genocidology (CRIMES OF ATROCITY) with Dirk Moses

The world is confusing, but there are experts in everything. In our least funny episode ever, we thankfully convinced a global expert, professor, researcher, author, and Genocidologist (it’s a real word) Dr. Dirk Moses to answer the questions that we may secretly have: What exactly is genocide? How long has it been happening? Is it a war crime? Is it a crime of atrocity? Who makes up humanitarian law? What's self-defense — and what's offense? How is it litigated? Whose business is it? Why do we do this to each other? What can be done? It’s a dense, long episode with lots of asides for history and context, but it might be just what you need to give you perspective on the conditions — and cycles of trauma — that can lead to crimes of atrocities.
