किसी भी प्राचीन शहर की तरह दिल्ली भी कभी किले के अंदर बसता था। इसकी ऊँची दीवारों के पार जाने के लिए कई दरवाज़े थे लेकिन लाहौरी, कश्मीरी, तुर्कमान और खूनी, ऐसे चार दरवाज़े थे जिनका इतिहास दिल्ली जैसा ही रोचक और हिंसक था। पर आज शहर किले की दीवारों के पार दूर दूर तक फैल गया है। दीवारें भी गायब हो चुकी हैं। बस दरवाज़े रह गए हैं। भूले बिसरे अलग थलग पड़े जिन्हे समय और इंसान दोनों ही भूल चुके हैं।

The four gates of Delhi

Like every old city, Delhi once was a walled city, encircled by high walls and well-manned gates. Among the many gates - Kashmiri, Lahori, Turkman, and Khooni were most important as their histories were as interesting and bloody as the city of Delhi. However, today as the modern city of Delhi has spread far and wide and the walls have disappeared, these mighty gates stand forlorn and forgotten.

Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati's love story is the stuff of a legend. A familiar trope often used in Hindi literature. But the story is of love, longing, and loss. A prince did love but was unable to save his lover from the prying eyes of the king. She saved her honor by committing suicide by poisoning herself. Baz Bahadur, however, tried to avenge his loss but finally submitted to the superior power of the king.

तमिलनाडु के दक्षिण में एक छोटी सी यात्रा शुरू हुई, उसके शहर तिरुनेलवेली से और ख़त्म हुई नागरकोइल में । यात्रा देश के कुछ सबसे सुन्दर इलाकों से होते हुए गुज़री। खूबसूरत मंदिर, हरे भरे खेत, पहाड़, साफ़ सुथरे गाँव और फिर पवन चक्कियों के फार्म जिन्हे अंग्रेजी में विन्डफ़ार्म्स कहते हैं। जहाँ दिर्श्य इतने सुन्दर थे वहीँ उनके पीछे की कहानियाँ जिनसे इंसान जुड़े थे वो उतनी ही निराशाजनक थीं। कहीं कॉलेज के अध्यापक अपने दिमागी खांचों में फंसे थे तो कहीं व्यपार के कुछ ऐसे नियम थे जो सारी समभावनाओं को ही खत्म कर रहे थे।

The southern end of Tamil Nadu was the scene of a short journey from the temple town of Tirunelveli to Nagercoil just before Kanyakumari. रामलीला सारे भारत में हर जगह एक ही मंच पर होती है लेकिन बनारस के पास रामनगर में काशी नरेश के शहर में इसका एक ऐसा रूप दिखाई देता है जिसका जोड़ दुनिया में दूसरा नहीं है। पूरा शहर एक स्टेज में बदल जाता है। यहाँ तमाम ऐसे पक्के स्टेज हैं जो बरसों से बने हुए हैं। इसके बावजूद रामलीला मोहल्लों-मोहल्लों घूमते हुए 31 दिन का सफर तय करती है। ये एक ऐसा उत्सव है जहाँ अभिनेता और दर्शक एक हो जाते हैं। जहाँ अभिनय करने वालों और उसे देखने वालों का पीढ़ियों लम्बा साथ होता है।

Caught in a time Warp: Ramnagar

Ramlilas have evolved over the years but there is a place where it's still performed the way people saw it 70 years ago. Ramnagar, a place close to Varanasi, organises Ramlila that has no parallel. Under the guidance of Kashi King, the Ram Lila moves from one neighbourhood to the other on a 31 day journey and is performed on stages that are built permanently for the purpose. It's here that the performers and the viewers are tied to each other by the generations long bonds.

In the shadows of Kanchenjunga: Gangtok

Sikkim's capital Gangtok is a city where buddhist monks and Indian film star Danny Danzongpa are present in every nook and cranny. The monks have a finger in every pie from peace to rather lack of it. And Danny? It seems every restaurant and hotel belongs to him as the owners use him as their calling card. Away from the human intervention is Mount Kanchenjunga who lords over Gangtok but her soul resides in the city's Anchay Monastery.

लेह से लामायुरू के बीच सौ किलोमीटर का सफर ऐसी ऐसी नायाब चीज़ों से भरा है कि समय कब बीतता है पता ही नहीं चलता। ऐसी ही एक यात्रा में लामायुरू के बौद्ध मठ में पहुंचना और फिर दिन भर घूमना और सेना के कॉन्वॉय के चलते वहां रुकना एक अनोखे अनुभव का कारण बना। थकान से बचने के लिए ऊँचे पहाड़ से गुज़र रही खाली सड़क पर सोना और शाम के ढलते सूरज में उठकर नीचे मठ देखना एक अजीब सी अनुभूति थी।

Road became the bed: Lamayuru

The hundred kilometer journey between Leh to Lamayuru monastery is littered with so many wonders that you lose track of the time spent here. One such trip to the monastery was accompanied by a forced halt due to military convoy movement. This gave us a chance of a lifetime to sleep on the road just above the monastery and wake up to catch a glimpse of the sunset.
