Between the Scenes - How Democrats Can Avoid a Primary S**tshow

    enFebruary 02, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Building strong connections in uncertain timesFocusing on core values and meaningful connections is essential for individuals and political parties in uncertain times

Building strong community connections is essential in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer's network, emphasizes the importance of relying on those around us for social bonds and disaster preparedness. By helping neighbors and growing local communities, we can create a more connected world. Meanwhile, in a different context, Matt Rogers discussed the potential pitfalls of overcrowded fields, using the example of professional wrestling's Royal Rumble. He warned the Democrats against having too many candidates in the primary race, which could lead to a chaotic and unpredictable outcome, much like the unpredictable nature of the Royal Rumble. In the end, it's crucial for both individuals and political parties to focus on what truly matters: building strong, meaningful connections and avoiding unnecessary distractions. So, whether you're looking to build a more connected community or support your preferred political party, remember that focusing on the core values and connections is key to success.

    • Intense infighting and negative campaigning during primariesPolitics can be divisive, with harsh criticisms and emotional connections shaping primaries. Unity and support for chosen candidates are crucial for effective campaigns.

The political landscape in America, particularly during the primaries, can be characterized by intense infighting and negative campaigning among parties. This was evident during the 2016 presidential race, where candidates like Trump and Bernie Sanders engaged in harsh criticisms of their opponents. However, once the primaries were over, there was a shift towards unity and support for the chosen candidate. While this behavior may be common in politics, it can lead to disillusionment and skepticism among voters. Trump's success in the primaries, despite his lack of policy knowledge, highlights the power of sound bites and the importance of connecting with voters on an emotional level. Democrats need to be careful not to let their infighting overshadow their passion and unity during the primaries, as this could lead to a lackluster campaign and disengaged voters.

    • Focusing on substance over spectacle in politics and lifeAssess candidates based on qualifications, not just electability. Build meaningful connections and prioritize substance in personal and political spheres.

The political process can sometimes feel like a spectacle rather than a solution-focused endeavor. According to the speaker, it's important to assess a candidate's fitness for the presidency based on their qualifications, not their ability to win an election. The political landscape has shifted, and it's crucial for the Democratic Party to identify and rally behind a strong candidate. Meanwhile, in a different context, Neighbor to Neighbor encourages community building and emphasizes the importance of forming meaningful connections with those around us. In the entertainment realm, MTV's All Stars 4 competition is heating up, with old and new contestants vying for a $300,000 prize. These various messages remind us of the importance of focusing on substance over spectacle, both in politics and in our personal lives.

    • Building strong community connectionsJoin Neighbor to Neighbor to strengthen local bonds and prepare for disasters, and enjoy high-quality California avocados grown by responsible, sustainable local farmers.

Building strong community connections is essential, especially in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of relying on the people in your local community for social bonds and disaster preparedness. Additionally, the story of California avocados serves as a reminder of the importance of local communities and the care and dedication that goes into producing high-quality products. So, whether you're looking to strengthen your community bonds or enjoy a delicious avocado, remember that it takes a neighborhood. SPECIAL: Candidate debates and how to fix them

SPECIAL: Candidate debates and how to fix them

An ongoing storyline on The Georgia Politics Podcast is the efficacy of the modern day debate format and ways to improve them so that they give voters more useful information. Joining the panel for this special episode is Shruthi Balachander, a Georgia Secretary of State Ambassador and member of Student Leadership Johns Creek.

Georgia just saw some of its top tier candidates, most notably Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker, wrap debates with the Atlanta Press Club. They stood behind podiums and answered questions from moderators in what many would describe as a traditional debate. There were no big surprises, and both candidates probably walked off the stage thinking that not much in their race has changed.

We don’t know yet how many people tuned in, but its safe to say that it will be a small number. The question is why more people don’t tune in and how do we, the public, convince more people that they should?

Shruthi recently helped Student Leadership Johns Creek put on debates for local races in the north Metro Atlanta community. She details the format they used and the process for picking questions, getting answers from candidates, and addressing issues in real time. This give much of the discussion on scalable potential fixes context.

At the end of the day, the panel concludes that there is plenty of blame to go around for debates not “working” anymore, but does offer alternatives that could reach more people and affect the outcomes of more races.

'PURPLE AMERICA?' - A sermon by David Ruffin

'PURPLE AMERICA?' - A sermon by David Ruffin
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 21, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION One of the grandest stories we tell in these United States is of our great unity amidst our diversity. E pluribus unum... “out of many one!” We are many… but how united are we really? And do we really honor and respect our differences? We long for union and connection, sensing some greater truth in oneness. But we also fear difference and long for security. Amidst these competing commitments, we often settle for a story of unity, even if down deeper we know it ain’t necessarily so. So let’s set aside our idealized visions of holding hands across America, and our idealized visions of our own lives while we’re at it, and explore anew where we each really are… And how we might yet come together. Great Scott! Obama Has a Time Machine!

Great Scott! Obama Has a Time Machine!

In the second segment of this week's show we turn our attention to the week in news.

Libya: Is the U.S. engaging in third conflict in the Middle East? Did Obama require Congressional approval before launching Cruise missiles into the country? What is the "mission", end-game and role of the U.S. and NATO allies in enforcing the no-fly zone? Is it possible to support the fall of Gaddafi, yet not have to commit long-term to the potential aftermath of a country without leadership and/or prolonged nation-building to fill any vacuum left by Gaddafi’s overthrow? We attempt to bring light to the events in Libya and what we view as the major issues facing U.S. involvement.

Obama’s Birth Certificate: Can we finally put this ridiculous narrative to bed? In this portion of the segment, we discuss the overwhelming evidence of Obama’s citizenship and birth in Hawaii, and why those who perpetuate this story are grasping at pathetic straws due to the lack of any other substantive or real argument about the man and his policies. We also address the issue of the GOP’s obsession with Obama’s father and his supposed “influence” on the President’s world-view.

Politics: We round out the segment with some 2012 Presidential election discussion and what we see as the issues facing the incumbent President, in addition to the issues facing the GOP and their split allegiances between the traditional conservative voters and the nonsensical rhetoric of the Tea Party. Can the GOP win by hugging the fence between “birthers” and the more moderate conservative and independent voters? Is it possible to be considered a serious candidate, while embracing the rhetoric of the far-right / Tea Party?

Understanding opposition research in the digital era

Understanding opposition research in the digital era

This week, host Tim Boyum takes us inside the world of political opposition research. We’ve all seen the ads, heard about salacious accusations or ready stories about political candidates. And most of that comes from what’s known as opposition research.

He talks with two North Carolinians involved in some of the more famous opposition research cases in recent times. Republican Charles Hellwig helped dig up information on 2020 U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham, and David Wheeler discovered and released several things about 2022 candidate and U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn.

    Both candidates ended up losing.

The two argue opposition research is vital for a campaign and not some dark room operation.
