How the Logic of Cults Is Taking Over Modern Life

How the Logic of Cults Is Taking Over Modern Life
Several years ago, I told some friends that I had an idea for a second book. It would be called ‘Everything Is a Cult.’ I’d noticed that in an age of declining religiosity, capitalism was filling the god-shaped hole left by the demise of organized religion with companies and services and products that were amassing a cult-like following in media, entertainment, and marketing. I never ended up writing the book. But last week, Sean Illing of ‘The Gray Area’ podcast with Vox asked me to come on his show to talk about my thinking on cults, identity, and the history of news media. Today, we're running that conversation on this feed in a rare example of me getting interviewed on my own show. Enjoy! Trust with Jimmy Wales

    Trust with Jimmy Wales

Information is power. But how do we adapt now that most of the information we consume comes with a heavy bias?

In an ironic twist of fate, it’s Wikipedia — the encyclopedia that anyone can edit — that has done one of the best jobs maintaining public trust in our polarized era.

I sat down with the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, in front of a live studio audience to explore how we got here and how Wikipedia’s transparency and vulnerability may be a model for a better future.

    This…is A Bit of Optimism.

Online vs. In-Store Shopping | Hold Up with Dulcé Sloan & Josh Johnson

“If I'm on the internet, I'm not going to see these little impulse buys. I'm not going to see this pack of gum at the register. There's no pack of gum at the register in an online store.” - Dulcé Sloan

“An online store will tell you up top - the thing you want, we ain't got any. The one you like, it's not here. We'll send you an email when it gets here, but for today, don't waste your time." - Josh Johnson

It’s online vs. In-store shopping this week on Hold Up with Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan and writer Josh Johnson.

David and Jonah Stillman are a father-and-son research team who specialize in generational differences and their impact on the workplace. David is Gen X, Jonah is Gen Z, and together they are helping today’s leaders understand the new generation.

#493 - David McRaney - Where Do Our Beliefs Come From?

#493 - David McRaney - Where Do Our Beliefs Come From?
David McRaney is a psychologist, journalist and author. Where do our beliefs come from? How do we form opinions? Why are we persuaded by some points of view but not by others? These are important to understand if we are to avoid developing a biased, unrepresentative worldview, they've also been the focus of the last few years of David's research. Expect to learn how everybody in a group can believe something that nobody believes individually, why arguing online so rarely works, whether people really are becoming more ingrained into their beliefs, how the Westboro Baptist Church convinces its members, the best ways to persuade someone who disagrees with you and much more... We Need to Collectively Change the Perception of "Success"

We Need to Collectively Change the Perception of "Success"

Today's episode is all about understanding how good we have it. We need to have a conversation about what it truly means to be successful. So many of us are playing up money instead of happiness and the reason why I'm so happy and why I have success is because I love the game, not the trophies that come from it.

Enjoy! Let me know what you thought.

The Man Who Named a Bluebird After Me with Carlos Whittaker

The Man Who Named a Bluebird After Me with Carlos Whittaker
In this episode, Sharon meets with her dear friend and bestselling author Carlos Whittaker to discuss how to let go of fear and change the world in a positive way. In an era of social media and ‘cancel culture,’ it seems more daunting than ever to pursue a cause or passion. Whether it's fear of public backlash or the intimidation that comes with comparison to other world-changers on social media, Carlos and Sharon explore how to take a risk in order to rescue the world. Carlos offers listeners practical advice on how to identify, expel and replace the lies we believe about ourselves with truth. Heartfelt, entertaining and authentic, this episode is for everyone - because we are all responsible for changing the world.
