Gen Z in the Workplace with Jonah and David Stillman

    enJanuary 10, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Learning and Growth Opportunities for Individuals and BusinessesEmbrace opportunities for personal and professional growth through education, businesses solutions, and self-care. Bridge the generational divide to foster effective communication and collaboration.

No matter what stage of life or career you're in, there's always an opportunity for growth and improvement. For those looking to advance their education, Purdue Global offers a respected online option backed by a renowned university. For businesses seeking to create value and stay competitive, CrossCountry Consulting provides tailored solutions for accounting, technology, and transactions. And for everyone, taking a moment for yourself, whether through education or a simple pleasure like Keebler Sandies, is essential. Another important takeaway is the generational divide and how to bridge it. Gen Z, the newest generation in the workforce, brings unique perspectives and challenges. Understanding these differences and finding common ground is crucial for effective communication and collaboration. Jonah Stillman, a Gen Z individual, and his father David, a Gen Xer, have made it their mission to help interpret the generations and foster mutual understanding. By recognizing and valuing the strengths of each generation, we can create a more inclusive and productive workplace and society.

    • Gen Z's Formative Years Shaped by Reality, Competition, and TechnologyGen Z grew up in a world of intense realism, competition, and technology, shaping their desire to get ahead and stand out, but also leading to anxiety, stress, and fear of missing out. Understanding these trends can help us navigate their unique challenges and opportunities.

The unique experiences and societal conditions during their formative years have shaped Gen Z into a generation with intense realism, a strong competitive spirit, and a heavy reliance on technology. This includes growing up in a post-9/11 world, experiencing the 2008 recession at a vulnerable age, living through a global pandemic, and never knowing a world without smart technology. While these experiences have brought benefits such as financial focus and innovation, they have also led to negative consequences such as anxiety, stress, and the fear of missing out. Gen Z approaches life with a strong desire to get ahead and stand out, but this intense pressure can lead to feelings of self-doubt and fear of conflict. Understanding these trends can help us navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with being a part of Gen Z. For instance, it's important to recognize the value of open communication and addressing conflicts in a healthy way, rather than avoiding them. Additionally, finding ways to manage stress and prioritize mental health can help mitigate the negative effects of constant innovation and change.

    • Understanding Gen Z's Dynamics and MotivationsGen Zers have unique work motivations and dynamics, leading to potential conflicts. Employers can bridge this gap by fostering open conversations, building relationships, and offering clear paths to promotion. Remote work culture necessitates creating opportunities for meaningful connections and interactions.

The work dynamics and motivations of Gen Z employees differ significantly from previous generations due to the availability of numerous job opportunities and the rise of side hustles. This can lead to conflicts, particularly regarding salary and promotions. However, it's essential to understand that Gen Zers are not necessarily conflict-avoidant but rather seizing opportunities presented to them. Employers can help bridge this gap by fostering a culture that encourages open conversations about career growth, building relationships, and offering clear paths to promotion. Additionally, the remote and hybrid work culture has impacted Gen Z's ability to build social capital in their early careers, making it crucial for employers to create opportunities for meaningful connections and interactions.

    • Gen Z's reliance on external validation impacts decision-making and causes stressGen Z prioritizes transparency and makes decisions based on reviews, but this can lead to increased stress and anxiety. To help cope, provide resources for goal-setting, time management, and stress management.

The access to information and transparency about various aspects of life, including salaries, has significantly influenced decision-making for Gen Z. This generation has grown up with the ability to make choices based on reviews, ratings, and opinions from others. However, this reliance on external validation can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Gen Z is statistically the most stressed generation, with higher levels of anxiety and depression reported. To help Gen Z better cope with stress and prioritize, it's essential to provide resources and tools for prioritization. This can include setting clear goals, managing time effectively, and practicing stress management techniques. Additionally, creating a supportive and open environment where mental health is prioritized and discussed can go a long way in helping Gen Z deal with stress and build resilience.

    • Permission to discuss mental health and seek helpGen Z's struggle to form deep relationships isn't due to lack of coping mechanisms but the difficulty of establishing genuine connections in a digital age, and older generations faced similar challenges but kept them private.

While it may seem that younger generations, specifically Gen Z, have fewer coping mechanisms due to the constant stressors of modern life and a lot less face-to-face communication, this may not be entirely true. Older generations, such as Xers and Boomers, also faced significant stressors and mental health issues but kept them private. The main difference is that there is now more permission and resources to openly discuss mental health and seek help. Furthermore, while it's true that many interactions with friends are now digital, nearly 85% of Gen Z still prefers face-to-face communication. The generation's struggle to form deep meaningful relationships may not be due to a lack of coping mechanisms but rather the difficulty of establishing genuine connections in a digital age. It's important to remember that communication, even if it's via FaceTime or voice memos, can still be considered face-to-face if it's uninterrupted and between two people. The key is to recognize the nuances of communication in today's world and not to make assumptions based on outdated assumptions.

    • The richness of face-to-face interactions cannot be fully replicated by technologyTechnology can't replace the depth and emotional aspects of in-person conversations, prioritize face-to-face communication for mental health and stress relief, and maintain strong relationships.

While technology like FaceTime and texting can be useful tools for communication, especially in forming new friendships or in global contexts, they cannot fully replace the depth and richness of face-to-face interactions. Older generations may miss the tactile and emotional aspects of in-person conversations, while younger generations may find technology to be a closer approximation than previous generations. However, it's important for us to encourage and prioritize face-to-face communication, especially for those struggling with mental health or daily stresses. We all have the means to connect with each other in today's world, and it's crucial that we make an effort to check in on each other and maintain strong relationships. The shared experiences and global events of today's world make us more similar to people around the world, but we must not forget the importance of the human connection that can only be fully realized in person.

    • Generational differences and shared experiencesParents should focus on desired end results rather than methods to help children overcome universal struggles and gain a competitive advantage by embracing their unique skills.

Despite the generational differences shaped by various factors like economy, technology, and upbringing, having a shared experience, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, can foster better understanding and world peace. However, understanding and accepting differences is crucial, especially when it comes to parenting. Instead of focusing on how the younger generation goes about things, parents should focus on the desired end result. By doing so, they can help their children overcome universal struggles and gain a competitive advantage by embracing their unique skill sets. For instance, Gen Z might be better at face-to-face conversations, while being more adept at multitasking and using technology. Ultimately, fostering open communication and focusing on results can help bridge the gap between generations.

    • The Importance of Being PresentBeing fully present in the moment builds strong relationships and is a valuable skill, while multitasking and distractions hinder meaningful connections. Gen Z values inclusivity and acceptance of differences.

Being present in the moment and fully engaged in current activities is a valuable skill, while multitasking and constant distraction can hinder meaningful connections. The speaker expresses a concern that many people, including their friends, are not content with the present and often preoccupied with what's next or other distractions. They believe that true multitasking is a myth, and being fully present with the people and activities around us is essential for building strong relationships. Another notable observation is the inclusivity and acceptance of differences among Gen Z, which sets them apart from older generations. This expectation of diversity and inclusion is a defining characteristic of this generation.

    • Understanding and Embracing Generational DifferencesLead with empathy and curiosity to build connections and learn from each other, regardless of age or generation.

Every generation brings unique characteristics and it's essential to lead with empathy and curiosity instead of making assumptions based on stereotypes. The younger generation, in particular, is known for their activism and desire for action to bring about change. Older generations have a responsibility to set the tone for empathy and curiosity and try to understand the perspective of younger generations. It's important to remember that these characteristics are not strengths or weaknesses but simply part of who each generation is. By leading with empathy and curiosity, we can build better connections and learn from each other. This conversation highlighted the importance of understanding and embracing the differences between generations. The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer.

ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage.

I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree.

Humble Confidence with veteran and entrepreneur Blake Hall

Humility stems from confidence. Confident leaders can admit when they're not the smartest person in the room.

Blake Hall exemplifies the type of leadership we need more of in business. A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification.

I sat down with Blake to discuss how his combat experience informed his journey as an entrepreneur and why the smartest leaders lead with humility.

The Ultimate Infinite-Minded CEO with Trek Bicycle CEO John Burke

The jump from $250 million to $2 billion in revenue doesn't happen overnight. Over 25 years, John Burke transformed Trek Bikes into a global powerhouse — one mom-and-pop bike store at a time.

The key to John's success is simple but powerful. Create value for others first, and you too shall be rewarded.

John and I discuss why the best way to win isn't to focus on "winning," but to focus on "play," and how the principles of The Infinite Game have guided his leadership. And he tells me why creative leadership is exactly what's missing in American government.

War reporters risk their lives to document conflict. And yet, after a career living on battlefields, Sebastian Junger's closest brush with death was surviving an aneurysm.

Sebastian's story of his sudden internal hemorrhage and making sense of what he saw while dying is the subject of his new book In My Time of Dying. As someone who usually writes as an outside observer, it's an atypical and personal exploration of death.

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

In 2005, Neil Strauss published The Game, a book about his years living in the pickup artist community. The Game sold millions of copies, stirred up huge controversy, and made Neil a bestselling author.

Neil has totally reinvented himself since writing The Game, and I wanted to talk with him about walking away from that identity of success. This led to a much deeper conversation about what success even is. Is meaning tied to outcomes, or is intention enough?

Neil and I don't see eye-to-eye on everything in this conversation, but I love talking with him because he challenges my ideas. I hope this episode challenges you as well, to continue questioning what the definition of success should be.

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners.

What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children.

I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.

In this episode (How do I out serve her), I wrap my conversation with a friend, who's been married for 5 years, and examine his journey towards marriage and how he and his wife have navigated challenging times.

We discuss service leadership in a relationship and the mentality to out serve your partner. We talk about the roles and responsibilities in the household and the importance of having a partner that will hold you accountable. We debate the perception of the term “head of household” and why it might be outdated. I inquire about creating space for your wife to find and have a voice in the relationship. We go deep on how to balance the business of the relationship with the romance in the relationship. We end the conversation around the idea of maturity, what that means, and the importance of time management to balance areas we invest our energy in.
