    Podcast Summary

    • Reaching out to a former runner left the hosts feeling uneasyPutting ourselves in unfamiliar situations can lead to feelings of guilt or unease, even with innocent intentions

Even the most mundane or unexpected interactions can leave us feeling uneasy or regrettable, especially when we step out of our comfort zones. In this episode of the Deal or No Deal auction bidding series, the hosts discussed their experience reaching out to Mitch Silcock, a former runner on the show, to bid for Deal or No Deal boxes, polo shirts, and set designs. Though they were initially excited about the idea, they later regretted their decision after Mitch expressed his disinterest and left them feeling "grubby." The experience reminded them of how uncomfortable it can be to put ourselves in situations where we may not be welcomed or appreciated, and how even the most innocent intentions can lead to feelings of guilt or unease.

    • Regretting Humorous ActionsActions that bring momentary joy or success can lead to regret later. Consider the potential consequences before adding more to a situation.

Our actions, even if they bring momentary joy or success, can leave us questioning ourselves later. The speaker in this conversation found himself carried away in a moment of humor on set, but later regretted his actions and couldn't stop thinking about it. He realized that while it was fine to make people laugh in the moment, he should have stopped there and not added more to it. The speaker also acknowledged that he had given more thought to the incident than others involved, and that he could have spared himself the regret by simply remaining dignified. The conversation also touched on the importance of knowing one's audience and the power of laughter to bring people together. Ultimately, the speaker learned that it's important to consider the potential consequences of our actions, even if they seem harmless in the moment.

    • Reflecting on Past Experiences with Mark WoottonDespite feelings of insecurity and disappointment, Joe and Mark discussed their past experiences and the emotional rollercoaster of their early careers in the entertainment industry.

The discussion revolved around a past experience involving Mark Wootton during a film project, which Joe felt nervous about due to his lack of confidence. Although Joe felt that there was no story to share, it was clear that he had feelings of insecurity and disappointment from being cut out of the project. The conversation also touched upon their early careers and the Midas Touch period. Despite their age, Joe expressed a concern that they had lost their spark. The discussion ended with a potential plan to reach out to Mark Wootton to reminisce about the past experience. The conversation revealed the emotions and experiences of both Joe and Mark during their early careers, highlighting the ups and downs of the entertainment industry.

    • Observing camaraderie and professionalism on a film set as an extraBeing an extra on a film set can be intimidating, but observing the camaraderie and professionalism of the cast and crew can leave a lasting impression.

The experience of being an extra on a film set can be intimidating, especially for a first-timer. The actors, such as Mark Wootton, Chris O'Dowd, and others, have built strong relationships during their time filming, leading to a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere on set. Despite feeling out of place and even embarrassing, the extra, David, was able to observe the camaraderie and professionalism of the cast and crew. Another key point is that even though the extra's performance might not directly impact the final product, the set environment and interactions with the cast and crew can still leave a lasting impression.

    • An Unpleasant Audition ExperienceDespite feeling overlooked and unimportant during an audition, it's crucial to remain persistent and resilient in the acting industry. Personal setbacks should not deter one from pursuing their dreams.

The experience of auditioning for acting roles can be nerve-wracking and intimidating, especially when surrounded by unfamiliar faces and high expectations. The speaker shared a story about an unpleasant audition experience where they felt overlooked and unimportant, leading to feelings of inadequacy and isolation. Despite the challenging experience, they emphasized the importance of persistence and resilience in the industry. The speaker also mentioned a past audition for a CTV show called "Bleak it out," where they felt out of place and unnoticed in the room. However, they acknowledged that despite these experiences, they continue to pursue their passion for acting and have found success through this podcast. Overall, the conversation underscores the importance of staying focused on personal goals and not letting setbacks discourage one from pursuing their dreams.

    • Recognizing and addressing fears and doubtsFears and doubts can hinder personal growth and creativity. It's important to acknowledge and challenge them, rather than allowing them to consume us and prevent us from pursuing new opportunities.

Fear and self-doubt can significantly hinder personal growth and creativity. The speaker in this conversation shared an experience where they were intimidated during a potential job opportunity, leading to a fear response that left them unable to move forward for several years. They felt isolated and misunderstood, assuming that others disliked them, when in reality, their perception was skewed by their own insecurities. This experience highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing our fears and doubts, rather than allowing them to consume us and prevent us from pursuing new opportunities. It's essential to remember that our thoughts and assumptions are not always an accurate reflection of reality. By acknowledging and challenging our fears, we can regain our confidence and move forward with renewed determination.

    • Preparation is key to performing at your bestEffective preparation involves knowing your lines, callbacks, understanding context, and team roles to deliver a successful performance.

Effective preparation is crucial for success in performing, whether it's acting or any other field. The speaker in this conversation shared his experience of feeling overwhelmed and underprepared during a script reading, comparing it to being a carpenter or gardener who hasn't sharpened their tools or prepared their workspace. He emphasized the importance of knowing your lines and callbacks to fully relax into your role and perform at your best. The speaker also mentioned the value of experience and repetition, as well as the importance of understanding the context and the role of each team member on set. He expressed frustration with the overwhelming nature of the production process and the importance of finding your footing and knowing what to do when you're unsure. The conversation touched on the importance of preparation, repetition, and understanding your role in a team to deliver a successful performance.

S3 Ep 469 Regular Guest: Andy Goldstein (The Nine-Ball Pool King!)
Andy is back on the Bix! And it’s been such a long time - so David and Joe are really keen to find out what he’s been up to. Well, as it happens he’s just back from America where he somehow manage to play in the US Nine-Ball Pool Open in Atlantic City. It was undoubtably the trip of a lifetime for him so he tells us all. And with all the deviations and distractions that that three of them always have when chatting, the story takes up the whole of the show. Plus, a whole lotta chat about 80’s chocolate adverts. Lovely stuff. S3 Ep 468: David’s At The Dentist Again - Part 2

    S3 Ep 468: David’s At The Dentist Again - Part 2
We left the last episode on a right cliffhanger, so hold on tight for the big reveal - just how did David get on at the Dental Implant Centre?! But this is Groundhog Day podding after all, so you know the drill - plenty more repetitious dentistry chat. And stay tuned for some properly dramatic news about his Bath move. There’s also a lot of awful 4G reception from David, so apologies for that. All in all, it’s a classic bit of Chatabix. S11 Ep 467: David’s At The Dentist Again - Part 1
David’s about to go back to the dentist for some more work on his teeth - or should that be the Dental Implant Centre? Either way, he’s pretty anxious again and speaks to Joe beforehand to explain exactly what he’s having done and how much it’s all costing. They also discuss the awkwardness of teeth whitening, read out some dental surgery reviews, consider death (of course) and wonder if all podcasters are ‘just a bit shit’. Joe also points out that they might be repeating a lot of this from their previous dentist episode, but none-the-less has another go at telling David about his hernia op. It’s a proper Groundhog Day edition of the pod. Make sure to check out part 2 to find out how the appointment went. S11 Ep 465: Joe’s Embarrassing BBQ Games
Joe went to a friend’s BBQ at the weekend, where all the guests played lots of games in the garden. He knows he got very competitive about it all and fortunately for us, some of the action was filmed. So he reluctantly sends David a few of the video clips for an analysis of his behaviour. And it turns out Joe’s excitement when celebrating was just as embarrassing as he remembers. David digs in to make the most of the discomfort - this is one deliciously awkward episode. Enjoy! S11 Ep 462: David’s Bought A Cold Tub
In some very exciting news, David’s bought a cold tub and of course Joe wants him to get into it on the pod. But for a number of reasons he won’t today, so that’s the end of that for the moment (watch this space). David does have a boxer-size class later in the morning though, so he does some demonstrations for Joe. In true Chatabix fashion, the conversation then spirals off into a whole host of miscellaneous delights. They even have a little competition over how long they can crouch down leaning against a wall for. It’s all go on today’s show. 160. Always Adding Value

    160. Always Adding Value

Kenny talks about the importance of adding value from a human perspective, such as confidence, believability, and vision. He argues that what leaders don't do can be even more important than what they do, as nonverbal communication is often just as powerful. He uses his own experience in accounting to emphasize the importance of reading financial income statements, taking the information from them, and using it to drive behavior and change the future results. He encourages listeners to think about whether they are adding or subtracting value when it comes to their own leadership qualities.

Kenny wants to emphasize that leaders should always strive to add value.  Kenny draws an example from Elon Musk to explain the concept of adding value. He explains that Musk's vision is so strong that it attracts people in droves. He then goes on to explain that adding value is not only possible in a positive way, but it can also be done in a negative way, citing Hitler as an example. Kenny teaches that adding value can be done in different ways such as in an Uber ride, at a restaurant, or with a team or client. This episode is about the importance of adding value to all types of interpersonal relationships.

    Life's 10 Biggest Decisions

    Life's 10 Biggest Decisions

How many of your life’s ten biggest decisions have you already made?

My guest today, behavioral scientist Dr. Adrian Camilleri, would often ask this question to friends and family, and found that it generated a lot of interesting conversation. It also generated a lot of his own thoughts, which made him want to dive more deeply into it and empirically study it and other related questions as well.

The result was the Biggest Life Decisions Project, which we'll be talking about on the show today. Adrian first explains the criteria that define a big life decision, the most common ones people make, and which of these decisions people rank as being the most important. We then talk about the numbers and types of big life decisions people typically make in each decade of their lives, and how these decisions tend to be front-loaded in your twenties, but you'll still have a surprising number to make in your later years, too. Adrian shares which decisions people tend to look back on positively and are correlated with higher life satisfaction, and which tend to lead to poor outcomes and regret. We also get into the way people can both underestimate and overestimate the importance of some decisions, before ending with what Adrian has learned by working on this project about how to make good life decisions.
