Body Electric: The Body Across The Ages

    en-usJanuary 13, 2024
What did the study by Columbia University examine?
How long were the recommended movement breaks?
What was the percentage reduction in fatigue for regular movers?
What challenge did NPR launch related to movement breaks?
What were common concerns about compliance in the study?

    • Incorporating short movement breaks into your workday can improve eyesight, posture, and mental healthTaking 5-minute movement breaks during long work hours can lead to significant improvements in overall well-being, including better eyesight, posture, and mental health.

Incorporating short movement breaks into your daily routine while working long hours in front of a computer screen can have significant positive effects on your overall well-being. During NPR's TED Radio Hour podcast, Manoush Zomorodi shared findings from a study conducted by Columbia University Medical Center, where over 20,000 people participated in integrating 5-minute gentle movement breaks into their workday. The results were astounding, showing improvements in eyesight, posture, and mental health for those who consistently practiced this habit. To help listeners try it for themselves, NPR launched the Body Electric Challenge, providing a quick start-up guide and additional reporting on the topic. As the BBC puts it, the best stories make us think, and this movement break study is a great reminder of the importance of taking care of our bodies in a world dominated by technology. So, consider joining the Body Electric Challenge and start making a difference in your health today.

    • New findings from Amgen study show improvements in fatigue, emotions with movement breaksAmgen study with Columbia University Medical Center found preliminary improvements in fatigue, positive emotions, and decreased negative emotions after implementing movement breaks in daily routines.

In this new era of human health, Amgen continues to innovate, sustainably advancing science to deliver new therapies every decade. I spoke with Keith Diaz, the lead researcher from a recent study conducted with Columbia University Medical Center. After months of planning, weeks of data collection, and countless hours analyzing the data, preliminary findings revealed that everyone in the study experienced improvements in their fatigue levels, positive emotions, and a decrease in negative emotions, following the implementation of movement breaks in their daily routines. However, it's important to note that these are preliminary, non-peer-reviewed findings. The research process requires expert review before publication. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.

    • Taking movement breaks every half hour reduces workday fatigue by 30%Regular movement breaks improve fatigue levels, but compliance is a concern, especially for frequent breaks

Taking regular movement breaks throughout the day can significantly improve fatigue levels. The study found that those who moved every half hour had the greatest improvements, with a 30% reduction in fatigue levels compared to a 20% reduction for those who moved every 2 hours. However, compliance was a concern, with 40% of participants dropping out. Those who did complete the study reported high levels of acceptance, with 82-83% expressing a liking for the intervention. However, feasibility was a concern for those taking breaks every half hour, with only half reporting it as doable. The average number of breaks taken per day for this group was only 8, significantly less than the recommended number for an 8-hour workday.

    • The Importance of Short Movement BreaksRegular short movement breaks can boost energy, improve mood, and enhance productivity. Simple activities like marching in place or taking a brief walk, to more engaging exercises, can make a difference. Developing a habit of taking these breaks can lead to increased focus, engagement, and even personal growth.

Incorporating short movement breaks throughout the day can have a significant positive impact on individuals' energy levels, mood, and overall productivity. The study revealed that people from various backgrounds and professions, including remote workers, museum staff, and stay-at-home parents, experienced noticeable improvements when they took regular breaks to move around. These breaks could range from simple activities like marching in place or taking a brief walk, to more engaging exercises like soccer drills or bike rides. Moreover, the study highlighted the importance of developing a habit of taking these breaks, making it as automatic as brushing teeth. For some participants, listening to the podcast was a catalyst for making a change, leading them to quit their desk jobs or implement more consistent movement breaks in their daily routines. The benefits extended beyond just personal well-being, with participants reporting increased focus and engagement during their work or training sessions. In summary, the study underscores the importance of recognizing the value of short movement breaks and making them a regular part of our daily lives. By doing so, we can improve our energy levels, mood, and overall productivity, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and balanced work-life experience.

    • Making movement a natural break and rewardIncorporating movement into work routine as a break and reward can lead to positive mood changes and increased motivation, focusing on personal feelings of improvement rather than long-term health benefits.

Encouraging people to listen to their body cues and making movement a desirable habit rather than a chore can be effective in promoting behavior change. During a study, participants tried to incorporate movement into their work routine as a natural break and reward, leading to positive mood changes and increased motivation. The study also emphasized the importance of focusing on personal feelings of improvement rather than long-term health benefits. While partnerships with fitness technology companies could be beneficial, aligning their interests with scientific goals can be challenging. Future plans include continuing to spread awareness and promote the importance of listening to one's body for overall well-being.

    • The Power of Personal Connections in Promoting Health and WellnessSpread health awareness through personal connections, word-of-mouth is a powerful tool, join the Body Electric Challenge at npr.org/bodyelectric to make a difference.

Key takeaway from the conversation with Keith Diaz, assistant professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, is the importance of spreading awareness about health and wellness through personal connections. The next phase of research will involve reaching out to participants for further involvement, but Diaz encourages individuals to start making a difference in their own small circles. Word-of-mouth is a powerful tool for spreading information, and by getting family, friends, and work colleagues involved, we can help promote positive health behaviors in our society. The Body Electric Challenge, available at npr.org/bodyelectric, offers an opportunity for individuals to join this movement and keep the momentum going. Remember, every small action can make a big difference.

    Are Crabs The Final Form?
Evolution keeps making crabs. In fact, it's happened so often that there's a special scientific term for an organism turning crab-like: carcinization. But how many times has it happened, and why? When did the very first crab originate? What about all the times crabs have been unmade? And does all this mean that we, too, will eventually become crabs? In this episode, host Emily Kwong chats with Javier Luque about crabs, carcinization and change.

The physics of wheelchair basketball, from a Paralympian
Patrick Anderson is widely recognized as the greatest wheelchair basketball player of all time. He's represented Canada at the Paralympics six times and led his team to win three gold — and one silver — medals. But since he first started playing in the 1990s, the sport has changed dramatically. He says that's due in part to the technological innovations in wheelchair athletics. In this episode, guest host Andrew Mambo chats with Patrick about the reasons for these changes. They also cover the origin of the sport, how the innovations that have changed gameplay and the rising popularity of wheelchair basketball around the world. Plus, the commonality between sport wheelchairs and stance cars.

What's Up With The Hot Ocean Temperatures?
Hurricane season is heating up: Hurricane Francine hit Louisiana last week and dumped rain across the South, and forecasters expect more stormy activity in the Atlantic in the next few weeks.

A big factor in this stormy weather is our extremely warm oceans. Scientists know climate change is the main culprit, but NPR climate correspondent Rebecca Hersher has been following the quest to figure out the other reasons. Hint: They may involve volcanoes and the sun.

Solutions Week: Reducing The Food Waste Problem

Solutions Week: Reducing The Food Waste Problem
We close out Climate Solutions Week with a look at the final step in the food system: waste. Roughly 30-40% of all food produced globally gets thrown out — a huge problem when it comes to climate change. Shuggie's Trash Pie and Natural Wine has answers for what to do with all that waste – be it bruised fruit and wilted greens salad or meatballs made out of beef hearts. The San Francisco restaurant describes itself as a "climate-solutions restaurant" — and they're hoping you find these dishes appealing. Or at least, that you're willing to give them a try. Shuggie's is one of a growing number of eateries trying to address this problem.

    Solutions Week: Reinventing Chocolate

    Solutions Week: Reinventing Chocolate
Climate change is contributing to erratic weather where cocoa beans are grown and threatening the global chocolate supply. Record rainfall last year led to fungal infections among cacao trees and dwindled supply of cocoa beans. Heat is also making it more difficult for cocoa beans to thrive. So, for day three of Climate Solutions Week, we look at one innovation in the food industry: chocolate substitutes.

As big chocolate manufacturers rush to stockpile cocoa beans, some companies like Planet A Foods are looking for a more sustainable solution: an alternative that looks like chocolate, tastes like chocolate and feels like chocolate... without chocolate.

Solutions Week: Climate Change Is Coming For Your Wine

Solutions Week: Climate Change Is Coming For Your Wine
In California's Napa Valley, the nation's unofficial wine capital, one varietal reigns supreme: cabernet sauvignon. But climate change is threatening the small blue-black grapes for which cabernet sauvignon is named. Increasingly severe heat waves are taking a toll on the grape variety, especially in late summer during ripening.

To kick off NPR's Climate Solutions Week, climate correspondent Lauren Sommer joins host Regina G. Barber for a deep dive into the innovations wineries are actualizing — and the ways that cabernet farmers and fans alike could learn to adapt.

Climate change is affecting our food, and our food is affecting the climate. NPR is dedicating a week to stories and conversations about the search for solutions.

2997 How to Do What's Best for You

2997 How to Do What's Best for You
In the midst of challenges and busyness, your priorities and dreams can get lost. Don't lose sight of what matters. Buckle up,  and learn how to do what's best for you. Just as quickly as the weather changes, so do our days; the ups and downs of the roller coaster that you don't even have to stand in line for.  Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at https://createyournow.mn.co. https://createyournow.mn.co But the reality is that we are weighted down by the responsibilities of the world around us.  This past weekend was a little crazy for us. My husband is changing jobs and opening up his private business, which required moving and getting the whole family to chip in. We did it at the cost of me not showing up here for two days. But let me tell you, you were always on my mind. Of course, though, you know how this gets me thinking. We all fall into these unplanned actions that cause us to drop one thing for another. And then it because a spiral event of whether we will ever get back on track. You don't have to feel guilty for doing what's best for you. However, there can be a learning curve. Create the recipe that works FOR you! The K.I.S.S. ~ Create the recipe of what's best for you! This simply means how you can get back on track without losing sight of what matters in doing what's best for you. Step 1: Take inventory of the season of life you're in. Right now– What are your priorities, goals, and dreams? Are you happy with the direction your life is headed in? If not, what changes do you need to make to get back on track? It's important to be honest with yourself and acknowledge the things that are no longer serving you or bringing you happiness. You've gotta look at your schedule as to what is important in the present moment. Step 2: Make a plan Once you have a clear understanding of your priorities and goals, it's time to make a plan. What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals? What changes do you need to make in your life to align with your priorities? What do you need to give up, even for a brief moment? It's important to break down your goals into manageable steps so that you don't get overwhelmed and give up. Create a timeline and hold yourself accountable for following through on your plan. Step 3: Take action The final step towards doing what's best for you is to take action. This is often the hardest step because it requires us to step outside of our comfort zones and take risks. However, nothing changes if we don't take action. Start small and work your way up. Celebrate your wins along the way, and don't be too hard on yourself if you experience setbacks or obstacles. Remember, doing what's best for you is a journey, not a destination. And this can happen at any time. Use these skills to create your now; a strategy that will take you from overwhelmed to overcomer. PRAYER: May the hiccups of your every day not cloud your presence of today. What you do matters to God, to your family, to your friends, and to yourself. Life is not going to be easy, but it's always beautiful. Look to God, who gave you the sparks, and let it continue to ring loudly in your heart. "Be present. Be incredible. Oh, and did your team win?

Today, we will take a play out of the playbook and do a little Monday quarterbacking.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Spin it your way!

Now, you have many choices, rather you win or lose, fail or succeed.

But how you continue to move forward sets the tone for your journey!

You can choose to get stuck in your own patterns and habits, and make excuses for why you fell short and didn't make it to the finish line.

Or you can choose to do it differently without excuses, no matter the result.

    1. Play through the highs and lows. And in this, you are giving your best! You have to stay focused. You can't give up regardless of where you land. "When you take action, you make traction. Take A.I.M.!" ~ Kristianne Wargo
    2. Keep it fresh and be creative. You can play in the game of life however you want. You get to come up with innovative ideas. You get to play to your strengths, so you can tighten your weaknesses. Think outside the box. "Patterns only keep you anchored to what worked in the moment. A new moment requires new actions to anchor." ~ Kristianne Wargo
    3. Be teachable throughout life. You can't do what God designed you to do if you aren't willing to become who He created you to be. You have got to be teachable. You must be willing to learn more even when you're at your best.

Life isn't about proving who you are. What matters is whose you are. When you consider how to overcome your circumstances or challenges, you are leading your life well.

PRAYER: May your journey continue to be steps of greatness that lead you closer to God and what He has designed for your life.

2565 Don't Be Pushed By Your Problems

2565 Don't Be Pushed By Your Problems

When was the last time you looked at your dreams with the intention of fulfilling them? "Don't be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Was waking up this morning one of those days? It's a Monday morning and all you can think about is why you don't like Monday's.

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

First of all, what has Monday's done to you?

Nothing. It's this underlying assumption (or a fad or a trend) that says you should dread your Mondays because you no longer have the weekends which is where your freedom lies.

Now some of those statements may have some truth to them.

BUT you control how you feel and the emotion you want to attach to your morning.

So why do you have to dread Mondays?

You don't. You get to choose. That's the beauty of life. You have choices, good or bad, that open doors of possibilities that can lead to opportunities worth chasing.

However, you have to get out of the way and stop focusing on your problems. There will always be problems. So don't be pushed by your problems.

What you have to figure out is what part of your dream is the part your want to become a reality.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Chase your reality!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

    1. Establish your boundaries. You have to construct boundaries that support your dreams in real-time. There are going to be seasons where you say no more than you say yes. There's nothing wrong with that. You are at the helm of making decisions for your dreams.
    2. Refine your habits. In order to get where you want to go, it takes a different direction with a specific outcome in mind. Meaning, that you gotta know where you're headed and change the habits to reflect the outcome you are in search of.
    3. Take A.I.M. regardless of the outcomes you encounter. You will fail. End of story. But the end is only to that failure. You still can regroup and restart right where you left off with the next action.

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

Your dreams are not going to come true if you continue to let your problems get in the way.

"Work beyond the obstacles to climb to the top where you can pivot closer to your dreams. Your destiny is little steps created by giant leaps of action." ~ Kristianne Wargo

You get to choose how you create your now.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
