Additionally, 1800flowers.com is a leading destination for celebrating life's special occasions, and their products are made with care and attention to detail. • A Journalist's Resilience: Myra's Story of Living with Epidermolysis BullosaBorn with a painful skin condition, Myra has lived a fulfilling life, inspiring others through journalism despite daily challenges

Myra, despite being born with a rare and painful skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa, has not let it hold her back from living a fulfilling life and pursuing her passions in journalism. Diagnosed at birth, Myra's condition causes her skin to be fragile and prone to chronic wounds that heal and break down, resulting in daily pain that she manages with painkillers. Despite the challenges, Myra has learned to deal with the condition for the past 33 years and even continues to inspire others through her journalism work. Her determination and resilience serve as a reminder that no matter the obstacles, one can still live a meaningful and impactful life. • Myra's childhood experiences shaped her resilienceMyra's rare skin condition led to a normal childhood, communication skills, and a unique career path in journalism

Myra's childhood experiences with a rare skin condition shaped her into a confident and resilient individual. Despite the fear and constant care required due to her injuries, she managed to maintain a normal childhood and even found ways to turn her unique situation into a career advantage. Myra's early memories were of being cautious and protected, as even minor falls could result in severe injuries. She had to deal with the condition in various aspects of her life, including at home, school, and with her siblings. However, her experiences also made her adept at communicating about her condition and interacting with people from a young age. Although she didn't initially plan a career in media, her ability to handle difficult conversations and share her story set her apart from others, ultimately leading her to journalism.

    • Sharing personal experiences can lead to confidence and media work opportunitiesDespite challenges, sharing personal experiences can boost confidence and open doors to media work. Comparing conditions to relatable experiences can aid understanding.

Sharing personal experiences, even those related to challenging conditions, can lead to increased confidence and a desire to engage in media work. The speaker, who has a severe skin condition resulting in scarring and disabilities, shares how speaking about her condition for charities as a teenager helped her gain comfort and confidence in public speaking. She started her media work in her twenties through social media and blogging. Despite the visible nature of her condition, she describes the challenges of explaining it to others, suggesting that it's best to compare it to burns for better understanding. She has had numerous surgeries throughout her life due to the condition's impact on her ability to rebuild skin. Despite the intensity of her experience, she encourages empathy and understanding, recognizing that those with less severe conditions may not fully grasp the challenges she faces. Overall, her story highlights the power of sharing personal experiences and the potential for growth and confidence that can come from doing so.

    • Impact of pandemics on chronic disease managementPandemics can disrupt access to essential medications and surgeries, emphasizing the importance of addressing their impact on chronic disease management. Maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on progress can help individuals cope with chronic conditions and overcome societal challenges.

The pandemic not only affected people's health through infection, but also disrupted access to essential medications and surgeries for those with chronic conditions. This was evident in the speaker's experience with paracetamol, which became scarce in supermarkets due to stockpiling. This issue highlights the importance of addressing the impact of pandemics and other crises on chronic disease management and the potential consequences of delayed treatments. Furthermore, the speaker shared her personal experience of coping with chronic pain and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. She emphasized the need to avoid focusing too much on the condition and instead focus on the progress and positivity that can be achieved. This is particularly important for individuals facing societal pressures and challenges in industries that may not be inclusive of those with disabilities. By focusing on the positive and working towards personal growth, individuals can overcome the psychological effects of chronic conditions.

    • Practicing gratitude and positivity can improve well-beingDiscovering gratitude as a tool led to significant life changes for the speaker, emphasizing the power of staying positive and open to new opportunities.

Practicing gratitude and maintaining a positive mindset can help individuals overcome challenging times and improve their overall well-being. This was exemplified in the speaker's personal experience after discovering the book "The Secret" and starting to use gratitude as a tool. Additionally, being open to new opportunities and taking small steps towards desired goals can lead to significant life changes. The speaker's own journey from interpreting for the NHS to interviewing celebrities for a living demonstrates the power of staying positive and being persistent.

    • From disability to superpower in media industryPersistence, self-promotion, and seeking advice can turn a perceived weakness into a career strength.

Turning a perceived weakness into a strength can open doors to opportunities. The interviewee shared their experience of using their disability as a superpower to break into the media industry and interview high-profile celebrities. However, they emphasized that making efforts and asking for advice from industry professionals is crucial. The interviewee faced setbacks and frustration but received valuable advice from an experienced media professional to keep going. This advice led to an opportunity to interview on the red carpet at the London Film Festival and interview celebrities like Tom Holland, Samuel Jackson, and Timothy Chalamet. Overall, the interviewee's success story highlights the importance of persistence, self-promotion, and asking for advice in achieving career goals.

    • Overcoming Obstacles in Journalism: A Disabled Reporter's JourneyA disabled journalist's resilience and passion led her to excel in her career, landing interviews with A-list celebrities despite physical challenges and health issues. Her experiences, including undergoing major surgery, only strengthened her love for journalism and determination to continue.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including physical disabilities and health issues, the resilience and passion of this disabled journalist allowed her to excel in her career and even land high-profile interviews with A-list celebrities. Her experiences, both positive and negative, have only strengthened her love for journalism and her determination to continue pursuing her dreams. Even during her most difficult moments, such as undergoing major surgery for skin cancer, her work provided her with the motivation to keep going and helped her maintain a sense of normalcy. The interview with Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx, conducted just days after her surgery, is a testament to her unwavering commitment and professionalism. Overall, her story serves as an inspiring reminder that no obstacle is insurmountable when one has the drive and determination to overcome it.

    • The importance of representation in media for individuals with disabilitiesIncreasing representation of disabled journalists and presenters in media can prevent harmful comments, encourage confidence, and inspire individuals with disabilities to pursue creative careers.

Representation matters, especially in media for individuals with disabilities. The lack of representation can lead to negative comments and questioning of their abilities, as seen in the experience of a journalist interviewed in the discussion. This issue is particularly pronounced for women with disabilities, who face extreme polarization in terms of positive or negative comments regarding their appearance. To address this issue, it's essential to increase the number of disabled journalists and presenters in the media. This not only helps prevent harmful comments but also encourages confidence and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to pursue creative careers. The media has the power to change perceptions and challenge societal norms. By increasing representation, we can inspire and support individuals with disabilities, and shift the narrative towards inclusivity and acceptance.

    • Overcoming societal expectations and prejudice in relationships and marriage with disabilitiesMaintain a positive mindset, understand that having a disability is not a personal problem, and strive for self-empowerment to defy societal expectations and achieve personal goals.

Despite facing unique challenges within certain communities, particularly the Asian community, regarding disability and societal expectations around marriage and relationships, it's essential to maintain a positive mindset and understand that having a condition is not a personal problem, but rather an issue for those who hold prejudiced views. The interviewee, who is the only woman in her family with a disability and has faced similar challenges, emphasizes the importance of resilience and self-empowerment. She has defied expectations and made significant strides in her career, including media journalism and interviewing celebrities. Her ambitions extend to writing for major publications and venturing into TV work. The interviewee's story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that having a limiting condition does not define who you are or what you can achieve.

    • Believing in oneself and having a supportive networkBelieve in yourself, overcome skepticism and discrimination, and normalize disability representation to achieve success in your desired industry.

Having a supportive network and believing in oneself are crucial for overcoming obstacles and achieving success, especially in industries where representation is lacking. Gaye Williams, a successful journalist and podcast host, shared her experiences of facing skepticism and discrimination but refusing to let it deter her. Her generosity in sharing advice and inspiring others to chase their dreams has made a significant impact on many lives. Normalizing disability representation in media is also essential, and Williams demonstrates this through her interviewing style and public engagements. Ultimately, having a clear vision of what one wants in life and believing that it's possible, despite any barriers, can lead to great achievements.

#253 Sensational Spices and Healing Herbs and with Simon Mills

I love chatting with Simon Mills, he has a wonderful breadth of knowledge across the huge spectrum of different herbs and spices. And he can talk eloquently and sensitively about them, in a manner respectful of both the traditional beliefs and uses of them, as well as the science that may or may not support their claims.

Today we talk about the use of spices and what extra benefits they may be adding to our diets beyond simply “antioxidants”.

We talk about bitters and tonics and why they may work.

We explore how spices may impact our gut microbiota and potentially influence their health benefits.

Rosemary and sage on the brain, ginger for colds and how traditional antiseptics worked.

Simon Mills is a University of Cambridge graduate in medical sciences who has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter UK since 1977. He has been a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription. He is now focusing on education through the public websites herbalreality.com and for professionals working with co-author Prof Kerry Bone at millsandboneacademy.com

#250 Health Statistics Everyone Should Know

#250 Health Statistics Everyone Should Know

Today I’m talking about statistics to do with food and health that everyone should know.

How much it costs us every year, where it sits on the list of the biggest contributors to ill health and death globally, what the impact of good food actually is and how bad people are currently eating according to current guidelines.

I don’t think many people appreciate these numbers. I get a lot of glossed looks whenever I talk about the impact of poor food on health outcomes, particularly with certain medical professionals. It’s often seen as an inevitability and the nonchalant nature in which we address the foundations of ill health is seen within these statistics. We all need to do better.

There is huge potential for improved health if we simply encourage and empower people to eat well everyday and that will have a knock on effect on productivity, wealth, happiness, relationships and so on. I don’t present this idea as a panacea, but just a huge tool in our aspiration for improving wellbeing.
