Book Club #1: Introduction to The Plague by prof.dr. Ruud Welten

What do Europeans think of immigration and asylum seekers? During the final part of the Miljoenennotagesprek, Timothy Hatton explains his large-scale survey research on Europeans' attitudes towards migration. We hear a lot of opinions online, but what do Europeans really think? Timothy Hatton is professor of economics at the University of Essex in the UK. His research focuses on economic history and applied economics. 

The Miljoenennotagesprek was organized by Debatpodium Arminius, Studium Generale of the Erasmus University, and Economist Society KVS. 

Is de overheid goed omgegaan met de energiecrisis? In deel twee van het miljoenennotagesprek gaat hoogleraar economie Robert Dur (Erasmus Universiteit) hierover in gesprek met Maarten-Pieter Schinkel, hoogleraar mededingingseconomie en regulering aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Het miljoenennotagesprek werd georganiseerd door debatpodium Arminius, Studium Generale van de Erasmus Universiteit, en economenvereniging KVS.

Wat betekenen de prinsjesdagplannen eigenlijk? Voor het 4e jaar op rij organiseerden debatpodium Arminius, SG Erasmus, en economenvereniging KVS het Miljoenennotagesprek. In dit 1e deel reflecteren Eva Wiessing (NOS), Kevin Spiritus (Erasmus School of Economics) en Marieke Blom (ING) op de nota en gaan zij erover in gesprek onder leiding van hoogleraar Robert Dur (Erasmus School of Economics). 

Somberte, moeite met concentreren, moedeloosheid, eenzaamheid, angsten. We wijken allemaal wel eens af van wat normaal wordt gevonden, maar zijn we daarmee ook gelijk ‘gek’? In deze lezing spreekt Sanneke de Haan over het nut en de nadelen van psychiatrische diagnoses, over het belang van (maatschappelijke) erkenning van psychisch lijden, en over de noodzaak om ons begrip van normaliteit verder op te rekken.

Free will is a puzzling phenomenon. We humans are under the impression that we make our own choices, but some argue that all of our actions are already determined for us. Is free will an illusion? In this lecture, dr. Lieke Asma  examines the different voices in the scientific debate about free will. What exactly is free will? How can you research it? Are people still responsible for their own actions in a determined world?

Als je ongeneeslijk ziek bent, kan euthanasie een uitkomst bieden om een lange en ondraaglijke lijdensweg te verkorten. In Nederland is de mogelijkheid daartoe al 20 jaar in de wet verankerd maar dit betekent niet dat het geen ingewikkeld, gevoelig en vaak controversieel onderwerp is. Dr. Heleen Weyers was als universitair docent Rechtstheorie verbonden aan de RUG en schreef twintig jaar geleden haar proefschrift over de totstandkoming van de Euthanasiewet. Dit jaar kwam haar boek Euthanasie in Nederland 2002-2022 uit, waarin zij kijkt wat er sindsdien met de wet gebeurd is. In deze lezing bespreekt ze de euthanasiewet.

Protest, uprisings, and demonstrations. We see them more and more nowadays. Recently, the university was occupied because of its ties to the fossil industry, we went to the streets for affordable housing, and we protested to show solidarity with women in Iran. How do uprisings such as these start and what motivates people to participate? Is there a new generation of protest? How can we interpret all these riots? Dr. Benjamin Abrams is Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Sociology at University College London and is an expert in the study of political processes in democratic and authoritarian societies.

Hij doet onder andere onderzoek naar illegale drugshandel, ondermijning, (maritieme) veiligheid, wapenhandel en corruptie. Wordt Nederland vrij van drugscriminaliteit als cocaïne en cannabis worden gelegaliseerd?
