    Podcast Summary

    • Finding Opportunity in Second ChancesFrom overcoming career setbacks and near-death experiences, to saving money on theme park tickets and enhancing cleaning routines, there's always a chance for a fresh start or comeback.

No matter the situation, be it a career setback or a near-death experience, there's always an opportunity for a comeback. Rick Elias, a survivor of the US Airways Flight 1549 that landed on the Hudson River, shared how this experience changed his perspective on life. He realized the importance of making the most out of a second chance and living differently. Meanwhile, for those looking to make their Walt Disney World vacation more affordable, Undercover Tourist offers adult theme park tickets at child prices. And with Clorox Scentiva, everyday cleaning can transform into a tropical getaway with its coconut scent and powerful clean. So whether it's in life or in the home, there's always a chance for a comeback or a fresh start.

    • Living in the moment and cherishing experiencesLife can change unexpectedly, so prioritize experiences and share lessons learned to make the most of every moment.

Life can change in an instant, and it's important to prioritize and experience the things that matter most to us now. The speaker shared a personal story about how he was caught up in the pursuit of success and had a near-death experience that made him realize the importance of living in the moment and cherishing experiences. He encourages others to do the same, as we never know when our time might run out. The speaker also emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and lessons learned, rather than keeping them to ourselves in a dog-eat-dog world. The speaker's own experiences, including being stranded in Afghanistan and flying home with a fallen soldier, have shaped his perspective on life and motivated him to live fully and share his knowledge with others.

    • The Role of Luck in SuccessAcknowledge the role of luck in shaping our lives, learn from seemingly unfortunate events, recognize opportunities, and continue to work hard.

While hard work and determination are important, acknowledging the role of luck in one's success is essential. The speaker, who considers himself fortunate to lead a global company, believes that luck plays a significant role in shaping our lives. He jokingly refers to himself as a "Forrest Gump of CEOs," emphasizing that his achievements are not a result of any inherent abilities, but rather a series of fortunate events. He also acknowledges that being born into privilege and good health are forms of luck. However, he emphasizes that one can improve their odds by learning from seemingly unfortunate events and recognizing opportunities. The speaker has started using the term "gratitude" instead of "luck" to describe his fortunate circumstances, as he believes the latter can come across as demeaning to those who have not been as fortunate. Ultimately, the speaker encourages us to recognize and appreciate the role of luck in our lives, while continuing to work hard and seize opportunities.

    • Finding joy in the process of successSuccess comes with responsibilities, and it's important to find joy in the journey rather than solely focusing on the end goal. Embrace the infinite mindset and find meaning in the process.

Success comes with its own challenges and responsibilities, and it's essential to find joy in the process rather than being solely focused on the end goal. The speaker shares his concern about passing on an unfair burden of success to his children and emphasizes the importance of gratitude, acknowledging the role of randomness or luck in life. He also reflects on his personal journey and the shift in his mindset from building a company to sell to embracing a long-term perspective, focusing on the joy of work and the infinite game of business. The speaker's admiration for the infinite mindset, as opposed to the finite mindset of winning at all costs, highlights the importance of embracing the journey and finding meaning in the process.

    • Focus on self-improvement, not competitionSurround yourself with abundant, ambitious individuals. Embrace continuous self-improvement and evolving company culture, rather than comparing and preserving.

Success is an infinite game, a continuous journey of self-improvement rather than a finite competition against others. Comparison can be the thief of joy, and it's essential to focus on bettering oneself instead of worrying about others. People who bring abundance and ambition for something greater than themselves should be the ones we surround ourselves with. A company's culture, like a shark, must keep evolving to stay alive, and the goal is not to preserve it but to align it with the team's vision and direction. Values are not something new to be taught but rather a personal foundation to build upon.

    • Creating a strong company culture through shared beliefsCommunicating and living out shared beliefs in a company can attract and retain employees, increase productivity, and foster a harmonious work environment

Building a successful company culture involves establishing a set of shared beliefs that guide decision-making and employee behavior. These beliefs can include embracing change and adaptability, maintaining a fast pace, and fostering a positive work environment. By communicating and living out these beliefs, companies can create a common language and opt-in culture that attracts and retains employees. For example, the belief in "everything is written in pencil" encourages comfort with change and adaptability, while "running up the escalators" emphasizes the importance of a fast pace. Additionally, maintaining a positive work environment, where kindness and collaboration are valued, is essential for creating a harmonious culture. Ultimately, a strong company culture can lead to increased productivity, employee engagement, and overall success.

    • Cherishing Moments of Awe and GratitudeRecognize the importance of every relationship and express gratitude to make the most of every moment, as life is not guaranteed to last forever.

Cherishing moments of awe and gratitude in life is essential. These emotions can be experienced during first-time experiences and in moments spent with loved ones, especially when time may be limited. However, it's important not to take these emotions for granted or express them too frequently, as doing so may diminish their value. Instead, strive to live an infinite game of love and appreciation, acknowledging the importance of every relationship and expressing gratitude as needed. Reflecting on the finite nature of life, it's crucial to recognize that there are things we may want to say or do that we should prioritize before it's too late. Life is not guaranteed to last forever, and it's essential to make the most of every moment.

    • The importance of self-love and forgiveness during crisisDuring life-threatening situations, self-love and forgiveness provide clarity and peace. Society often pressures individuals to carry guilt and shame, but practicing self-love and forgiveness allows us to move forward in life without carrying the weight of past regrets.

During life-threatening situations, people often reflect on their lives and express love towards themselves and others. Sully's experience on the Hudson River mirrored this phenomenon, as he held himself and said "I love you" in the moment of impact. This profound moment highlights the importance of self-love and forgiveness, which can provide clarity and peace during times of crisis. Unfortunately, self-love has been misconstrued as having a big ego, but it is essential to live a life worthy of our own love. Learning to forgive ourselves is an integral part of self-love, and it's a valuable lesson that cannot be learned from books or magazines. Instead, it's a moment of realization that comes from within. Society often puts pressure on individuals to carry guilt and shame, but it's crucial to avoid shaming ourselves and others. By practicing self-love and forgiveness, we can move forward in life without carrying the weight of past regrets.

    • Maximize value in life through 3-for experiencesMake everyday experiences meaningful and memorable by learning, spending time with friends, and creating cherished memories (3-for) to maximize happiness and fulfillment

We should aim to maximize the value we get out of our time in life. This can be achieved by making everyday experiences more meaningful and memorable. For example, playing golf with friends on a beautiful day in an amazing course is more valuable than just playing golf alone. Every interaction and experience should be thought of as a 3-for: learning something new, spending time with a friend, and creating a cherished memory. By dimensionalizing our experiences and focusing on the abundance of relationships and friendships, we can make the most of our time and live richer, fuller lives. As the speaker mentioned, time is the ultimate currency in life, and making every moment count can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment. So, next time you're with a friend, make it a 3-for experience and cherish the memories you create together.

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer.

ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage.

I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree.

Humble Confidence with veteran and entrepreneur Blake Hall

Humble Confidence with veteran and entrepreneur Blake Hall

Humility stems from confidence. Confident leaders can admit when they're not the smartest person in the room.

Blake Hall exemplifies the type of leadership we need more of in business. A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification.

I sat down with Blake to discuss how his combat experience informed his journey as an entrepreneur and why the smartest leaders lead with humility.

The Ultimate Infinite-Minded CEO with Trek Bicycle CEO John Burke

The jump from $250 million to $2 billion in revenue doesn't happen overnight. Over 25 years, John Burke transformed Trek Bikes into a global powerhouse — one mom-and-pop bike store at a time.

The key to John's success is simple but powerful. Create value for others first, and you too shall be rewarded.

John and I discuss why the best way to win isn't to focus on "winning," but to focus on "play," and how the principles of The Infinite Game have guided his leadership. And he tells me why creative leadership is exactly what's missing in American government.

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

War reporters risk their lives to document conflict. And yet, after a career living on battlefields, Sebastian Junger's closest brush with death was surviving an aneurysm.

Sebastian's story of his sudden internal hemorrhage and making sense of what he saw while dying is the subject of his new book In My Time of Dying. As someone who usually writes as an outside observer, it's an atypical and personal exploration of death.

I was privileged to speak with Sebastian about the fragility of life and why being necessary to others is one of our highest needs of all.

Starting a company from scratch isn't easy. Doing it multiple times seems downright impossible.

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

In 2005, Neil Strauss published The Game, a book about his years living in the pickup artist community. The Game sold millions of copies, stirred up huge controversy, and made Neil a bestselling author.

Neil has totally reinvented himself since writing The Game, and I wanted to talk with him about walking away from that identity of success. This led to a much deeper conversation about what success even is. Is meaning tied to outcomes, or is intention enough?

Neil and I don't see eye-to-eye on everything in this conversation, but I love talking with him because he challenges my ideas. I hope this episode challenges you as well, to continue questioning what the definition of success should be.

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners.

What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children.

I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.
