    • Heat Safety and COVID-19 PrecautionsDuring hot weeks, prioritize health by using cooling centers, staying informed on COVID-19 updates, and getting vaccinated against Omicron and its variants.

During this hot and humid week in Minnesota, it's crucial for residents, especially the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, to prioritize their health and safety. The Salvation Army and local governments have opened cooling centers to help people beat the heat. Meanwhile, public health officials urge everyone to get updated COVID-19 vaccines, including the new shots tailored to protect against Omicron and its variants. With COVID being a year-round challenge, it's essential to stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard your health. Additionally, the investigation into the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl in Minneapolis is ongoing, and no further details have been released.

    • Racially underrepresented students, resilienceSchool-based lessons acknowledging racially underrepresented students' cultures can positively impact their resilience against discrimination.

School-based lessons acknowledging the racially underrepresented cultures of students of color can have a positive impact on their resilience against discrimination. According to a new study from the University of Minnesota, these conversations can help counteract the negative psychological effects of discrimination. Assistant Psychology Professor Juan Del Toro, who conducted the research, shared that he was inspired to begin the study due to concerns about teaching on race, ethnicity, or diversity in classroom settings. Del Toro followed students aged 11 to 18 for several weeks and found that these lessons were beneficial for children of color. In other news, travelers in parts of Minnesota can expect lane closures on Highway 10 in St. Cloud and Sock Rapids, as well as near the intersection of Highway 14 and Broadway Avenue in Rochester. In sports, the Minnesota Twins begin a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves tonight, while the Lynx retired Maya Moore's jersey number 23 at Target Center, recognizing her significant contributions to the franchise. Maya Moore Irons, who led the team to six WNBA finals and four championships, left the game to focus on justice reform and advocacy.

Senate confirms Minnesota’s newest federal judge. Minneapolis residents voice thoughts on Blue Line extension plan

Senate confirms Minnesota’s newest federal judge. Minneapolis residents voice thoughts on Blue Line extension plan

The U.S. Senate has confirmed a veteran prosecutor as Minnesota’s newest federal judge.  President Joe Biden in June nominated Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Provinzino to replace retiring Judge Wilhelmina Wright. The Senate approved the president’s choice in a bipartisan vote. Provinzino, from St. Cloud, has served as an assistant U.S. Attorney since 2010 focusing on human trafficking cases.

And dozens of Minneapolis residents Thursday voiced their opinions at a city council committee hearing about the proposed Blue Line extension plan. Kristel Porter, executive director of the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition, says the route — which goes down West Broadway — needs a safety plan before it can go forward. Municipalities where the route will be located are holding public hearings on the preliminary design plans before they vote on it. The vote must take place before Oct. 10.

Twin Cities business owner addresses U.S. House panel on crime. Minneapolis considers new encampment data policy

Twin Cities business owner addresses U.S. House panel on crime. Minneapolis considers new encampment data policy

A Twin Cities business owner Wednesday urged U.S. House members to focus on tougher penalties as they weigh public safety policy. Brian Ingram runs Purpose Driven Restaurants. He told a Republican-led panel he has had several burglaries in recent years and he pushed for tougher sentences to deter people from reoffending. Democrats on the committee said the hearing was a political stunt and should have also included a discussion about gun violence.

And the Minneapolis City Council is considering an ordinance amendment requiring the city to consistently report what happens when homeless encampments are cleared. That includes information on how often clearings happen, the number of people who may have been impacted and if those people were immediately connected to a shelter. It would also include reporting on how much clearings cost taxpayers.
