    How can you protect yourself from missing person scams?

    The Garland Police Department is cautioning the public on a potential scam involving missing persons, and other posts of personal information on social media.

    Recently, the Garland Police Department responded to a report of a missing person, in which the family received alarming calls from unidentified individuals claiming to have their missing family member and demanding money for their return.

    Thankfully, the missing person returned home safely and the ransom request was deemed to be fraudulent.

    Unfortunately, this type of scam is not uncommon, and the Garland Police Department is urging the public to exercise caution when posting personal information about missing persons on flyers or social media platforms. Scammers frequently hide behind fake profiles to target emotionally vulnerable parents and loved ones.

    Always be wary of unsolicited requests for currency, and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
