The Holdovers, Saltburn, May December, Godzilla Minus One - Movie Reviews and 2024 Oscars Preview

We provide spoiler free movie reviews of some of 2023's greatest films, 'The Holdovers,' 'Saltburn,' May December,' and 'Godzilla Minus One!'  Do not miss your one stop shop for the Academy Award's 2024 Oscars preview, because these movies will absolutely be topics for discussion this award season!

A warm hug on a winter night, The Holdovers. We start this episode off with The Holdovers, an incredibly human story that we rarely get in the theaters nowadays. Directed by Alaxander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and introduces us to Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers is the PERFECT Christmas and winter watch that will etch its way into so many Christmas film rotations. But this movie is so much more than that, it is a heartfelt coming together of such a loveable cast of characters, from the grumpy old school teacher that has reached a stasis in life, to the heartbroken cafeteria lady that is struggling to move on, all the way to the foolhardly high school kid that is the absolute antithesis to the professor. This movie has it all, from unforgettable performances to a beautiful soundtrack, and Christmas card cinematography that transports you to New England underneath a blanket of snow and intrigue. Do not miss The Holdovers, and follow us as we journey through it in a spoiler free review!

The talk of cinema town, Saltburn! We have two very different opinions and battle them out in our spoiler free review of Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi's latest film! Emerald Fennell is talented behind the camera, and Rosamund Pike is spellbounding, but where do we finally land on the IT movie of the moment!? Listen and find out!

An absolute gem was released at the end of the year on Netflix, but not enough people are discussing it- don't let this film pass you by! May December! Todd Haynes is back with another polarizing melodrama, this time s tarring Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, and the always incredible Julianna Moore who gives potentially the performance of the year. This is a complicated story based on an actual tragedy, but leave our assumptions at the door because May December and it's incredible score and beautiful Tybee Island backdrop paint a picture for you that will leave you mesmerized, exasperated, and in dark contemplation. This movie is a summer dream, but given to us in December- do not miss it!

Last but CERTAINLY not least- GODZILLA MINUS ONE! Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, starring Minami Hamabe, Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Sakura Ando, Godzilla Minus One is a force to be reckoned with. Crowds are calling this the movie of the year, maybe one of the best in the last decade, but the crazy part?! Even the Kaijus passionate are raving that Godzilla Minus One may be the best Godzilla and monster movie OF ALL TIME! Can it possibly live up to that!? Explore post war Japan with us in our spoiler free review of Godzilla Minus One and find out if it lives up to the immense hype!

Each of these movies will be in the Oscars conversations in various categories, so please use this episode to go through all of them and arm yourself with movie knowledge to traverse this Oscars season as we give  you a preview of a lot of the heavy hitters and some that are understated! Halloween: The Original Story of Michael Myers

Halloween: The Original Story of Michael Myers

Trick..or treat.. or DIE! Journey through Halloween '78, Halloween 2, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and the 6th installment.. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers as we take a deep dive into the original story of The Shape himself. We review every Halloween movie from the original timeline, plus we also briefly discuss the long lost tome- the Halloween novelization book by Curtis Richards, which fills in a ton of gaps in Michael's story in Halloween '78. Taking Shape: Developing Halloween From Script to Scream is also a huge recommend!

We begin with John Carpenter's 1978 accidental masterpiece ,'Halloween,' which took the world by storm, giving birth to the embodiment of evil, the Shape, the Boogeyman, Michael Myers himself.  We discuss the entire original story of Michael Myers as told by Halloween '78, Halloween 2, 3, 4, 5, and the Revenge of Michael Myers! We take a deep dive into the Haddonfield slasher, the mythos surrounding Michael and how the Shape was born, and the Halloween films, plus a ton of behind the scenes trivia, what could have been, and a lot more fun facts! Find out how Michael Myers became a titan of the American horror zeitgeist!

To 1981 we go & we have Halloween II (2) , directed ALMOST by David Lynch but ends up in the hands of Rick Rosenthal, screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, and after the original cut was viewed by the master himself, 11 + minutes were reshot by Carpenter and that gave us the theatrical version of the film.

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch famously omits Myers in favor of the original anthology idea, but after bombing at the box office our babysitter stalker was back in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)! The Boogeyman awakes on Halloween Eve with vengeance on his mind after hearing he has lineage still alive, 7 year old Jamie! Michael  returns to Haddonfield, following the true curve-ball of a story line from the 2nd installment of the Halloween franchise. Buckle your seatbelts, because it gets even weirder..

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989). The Shape returns to Haddonfield once more in the craziest installment yet, w/director Dominique Othenin-Girard taking Michael Myers to territory off the beaten path and into the great unknown- druids, cults, and the Thorn! DOG also was brought on for Halloween Kills (2021) as the AD, which is just one of the cool facts and trivia we explore in the Halloween franchise on this episode!

The finale of the original story of the '78 Michael Myers and Halloween... 1995's Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Directed by Joe Chappelle we have the most insane entry in the entirety of the 13 movie Halloween franchise! The Cult of Thorn, the man in black, 2 VERSIONS of this movie, and Paul Rudd's cinematic debut all play a part in this wild ending to the original Michael Myer's story- don't miss it!

We walk you through the entire original story of the boogeyman himself, Michael Myers, starting in 1978 and ending up in 1995, uncovering facts, behind the scenes antics, why and how each movie was made, and just what drives the infamous Babysitter Murderer! We also get into fun Halloween trivia, this is truly a deep dive into one of the most iconic franchises in American cinematic history- come along with us horror, Halloween, and spooky season fans! Impress your friend group with knowing EVERYTHING about the OG Michael Myers!  From the influence of Hitchcock on John Carpenter, to the behind-the-scenes disagreements on where the story should go, and even some extremely fun what-could-have-beens in directing and casting! But truthfully we navigate through the story of the scariest on-screen slasher of all time and get to the heart (or lack thereof) behind his story.

Michael Myers became an American horror fairy tale, journey with us to find out how.

The Nun II, A Haunting in Venice, No One Will Save You (Spoiler Free Movie Review)

The Nun II, A Haunting in Venice, No One Will Save You (Spoiler Free Movie Review)

The Nun 2 / II, A Haunting in Venice, and No One Will Save You spoiler-free and quick movie reviews for your listening pleasure!  The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice are in theaters now, No One Will Save You just arrived on Hulu- GO WATCH IT NOW!

First up, The Nun 2, our next submission into the Conjuring universe and the third by director Michael Chavez. I think we have a horror icon on our hands, if even just in symbology, with the dark sister form of Valak played hauntingly by the great Bonnie Aarons.  The demon nun returns in a bigger, grander movie that once again calls upon our final nun heroine, Sister Irene played brilliantly by Taissa Farmiga (sister of Lorraine Warren, what!? conspiracy theory fun!) - can she deliver the goods again? Listen and find out if the trip to post-war France is worth it.

Up next, the third entry into our favorite Agatha Christie inspired trilogy, A Haunting in Venice (2023)! Hercule Poirot is back and so is his glorious mustache in another murder mystery in an absolutely to-die-for setting, but does it have the goods? Inspired by Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party, we follow Orson's I MEAN Kenneth Branagh's direction and acting into a gorgeous, albeit haunted, palazzo in late 40s Venice, Italy. Another fun cast of characters bordering on caricatures, in the best of ways, the introduction of the amazing Michelle Yeoh and the miscast but talented Tina Fey, and the fun strand of reason versus the supernatural give way to a very fun, Halloween setting, murder mystery that could be the strongest of the three- listen and find out!

Last but CERTAINLY not least, Brian Duffield's No One Will Save You.  Exclusively on Hulu, this alien home invasion horror sci-fi flick has taken the internet, and WORLD, by storm! Duffield has already given us the amazing Underwater (2020), can he deliver yet again?! Yes. A thousand times, yes. 'No One Will Save You' is a movie with only two lines of dialogue but an incredibly physical performance by Kaitlyn Dever that truly takes you on a journey you haven't been on before. An incredible script gives way to a haunting first act, stepchild of Signs, ET, and The Strangers, and then walks in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, then we get an emotional beat that is absolutely carried  by the entirely too lovable Brynn, and then some of the most creative creature design I've ever seen in a movie take us from the second act into the third. Again, this is a SPOILER-FREE review of No One Will Save You, so I kept it brief, but just know this movie explores the boundaries of the genre film and uses the rules as a playground, diving into a little bit of every kind of horror movie you can think of- AND IT RULES BECAUSE OF IT! Go watch 'No One Will Save You' right no on Hulu!

Enjoy the spooky season people, Halloween is the greatest! And grab you a PSL, cuddle up, watch these horror movies, they hit different in autumn. The Nun II, A Haunting in Venice, and No One Will Save You compliment the halloween atmosphere perfectly, and  you won't regret taking the time to watch any of them! To the contrary, these movies are truly fun with No One Will Save You being an absolute CANNOT MISS feature.

If you enjoyed, please share the episode around, we'd greatly appreciate it! And, as always, thank you so much for your time fellow movie and horror lovers, I hope you enjoyed your stay. And as you're falling asleep tonight, just let your mind be open to just maybe.... you are not alone.

'Sinister': The Scariest Movie Ever Made?

'Sinister': The Scariest Movie Ever Made?

Ever wondered what makes a film truly terrifying? Put your big boy pants on and join us as we journey into the nightmare that is the 2012 horror masterpiece, 'Sinister,' directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Robert Cargill, my favorite horror filmmaking duo! Discover why this chilling film left such an unforgettable imprint on a generation, and why we believe it marked a resurgence in the horror genre as we know it today.

The opening of Sinister is one you will NEVER forget, and although this film maims you with its brutality, it grounds itself with its humanity and heart. Ethan Hawke brings Ellison Oswalt alive in a way only he can, with a mesmerizing performance through the pursuit of his true crime white whale, and balancing being a present husband and father. But there is more to this film than ambition, even more than just fear itself- there is a true look in the mirror and you're faced with the thought- what if I don't matter anymore?

Sinister scared you from the jump, but the emotional beats never miss either with brilliant on-screen chemistry of husband and wife, but let's not forget the demon in the room.. Bughuul, the Eater of Children's Souls. The film's demonic entity, and its ancient pagan connections going all the way back to Babylonian times, is truly a face you'll never forget, a darkness you'll never truly escape. I don't want to give too much away in the description, I implore you to give this episode a listen and travel with us through a vacuum of darkness, where seemingly not a single light can be found. There are many threads to follow in this masterpiece of a horror movie, but with the amazing Scotty D behind the camera you will not only have no problems doing so, but you'll see some of the best lit shots in modern movies. Scott Derrickson is more than Dr. Strange, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Blackphone (although those are all great), he and Cargill are creators of one of the scariest movies ever brought into existence- literally from a 'Ring' induced nightmare Robert had.

Sinister is a horror film that you don't get right up after watching,  you'll need a minute. A reminder even, and a hopeful sigh of thankfulness that you were able to come back to our world- one without Bughuul and the innocence of children tainted. Or so you thought, wait until you see what makes him so special... and terrifying.

Scary movie season is here, although it is 365 in my house, so get ready for Halloween by scaring your pants off with this amazing movie. 'Sinister' is a force to be reckoned with, and I encourage you to watch it right away, prior to listening to this, and allow yourself to get scared again and reminded that fear wasn't left behind in childhood.

And please, if you enjoyed our deep dive into Sinister, I'd politely request a sharing of this episode with your friends, and maybe a 5-star review if you'd be so bold- I'd truly appreciate it!

LONG LIVE HORROR, LONG LIVE SINISTER! Sinister is on Amazon Prime now! Go start your spooky season!

'Asteroid City' and 'Past Lives' Review and Deep Dive - Exploration of Life and Fate

'Asteroid City' and 'Past Lives' Review and Deep Dive - Exploration of Life and Fate

Wes Anderson is more than his aesthetic, and Asteroid City is more than a beautiful postcard. This film begs this question though, is there more to life? Then, Celine Song's Past Lives! 'Past Lives' is a Korean force of a movie, an emotional tour de force that you will never forget, but you have to watch! Asteroid City and  Past Lives movie reviews and deep dives, join us!

What if there's a whole new universe waiting to be discovered - a universe created by the enigmatic Wes Anderson? Get ready to get lost in this episode as we navigate the tightly-woven visual tapestry of Anderson's 'Asteroid City', decoding the intricate relationships of its characters and the complexities of a play within a movie within life. Listen in as we engage in a hopefully thought-provoking debate on the auteur that is Wes Anderson, and marvel at the performances Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Liev Schreiber, and so many more *cough, Barbie, cough.*

But our cinematic journey doesn't stop there. We venture into the emotional depths of Celine Song's 'Past Lives', as we examine its powerful portrayal of love, relationships, and the ordinary. Hear our analysis of the film's Korean cultural influences, its portrayal of a complex love triangle, and how it subtly avoids clichéd narratives. Join our discussion on the profound differences in loves, romantic and otherwise, and the amazing Korean concept In-Yun. Also, Teo Yoo gives one of the best performances from a leading man, maybe ever. Do not miss this film.

Life is a series of choices, but what about the life we don't choose - the 'ghost ship life'? We share our personal reflections on this concept and how it has influenced our own lives. We wrap up our conversation by expressing our admiration for the transformative power of movies and how they transport us to a different world. Don't miss this episode - it's a celebration of cinema and an exploration of life's intriguing possibilities- fate?

Your 'what ifs' build a life on their own, but you can only view it from the shore. And these two films explore both sides of that coin, please enjoy them and then listen to this episode- might be my favorite one yet. Remember, feel a movie before you attempt to understand it.

Get Ready for Spooky Season: 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' and 'Cobweb' Movie Reviews and Discussion

Get Ready for Spooky Season: 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' and 'Cobweb' Movie Reviews and Discussion

We review and deep dive into The Last Voyage of the Demeter, aka the Captain's Log chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, and then we find ourselves on Halloween night stumbling into Cobweb, a brand new horror flick that crawled into theaters during the Barbenheimer mania and then slithered away to VOD as quickly as it arrived- don't miss it horror fans!

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is in theaters now, and we start off with a spoiler-free movie review and then we announce when we embark into our spoiler-filled deep dive! Directed by Trollhunter and the Autopsy of Jane Doe's Andre Ovredal (André Øvredal) and starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, Woody Norman and co, The Last Voyage of the Demeter gives us a Dracula the likes we haven't seen since Nosferatu, a truly terrifying beast with a captive crew on the high seas sailing for London with mysterious cargo and a lot of hiding places. This is a brutal horror period piece that borrows one of the most legendary IPs in literature and gives a unique, haunting beautiful spin on the old tale. This is a snapshot in the life of Dracula, one that hardly spares a single soul, but it is truly a beautiful moon and lantern lit slight and one you need to catch on the big screen- or do you?! Listen and find out!  This is a beast that masquerades as a man, and this film is all creature feature baby!

Cobweb! From the Blacklist and Bloodlist- we review this victim of Barebenheimer because we don't want original horror to just disappear without being watched! Cobweb came to some movie theaters July 21st, coinciding with the biggest zeitgeist event in recent cinema memory, thus it left theaters shortly after and is already available on VOD for rent and to own. Cobweb is directed by Samuel Bodin and stars, the kid in both films of our double feature, Woody Norman, the amazing Lizzy Caplan, Homelander, I mean Antony Starr, and Cleopatra Coleman, and is set right around HALLOWEEN and the perfect cozy nightmare fairly tale watch to get you ready for spooky season! As IMDB puts it, 'Horror strikes when an eight-year-old boy named Peter tries to investigate the mysterious knocking noises that are coming from inside the walls of his house and a dark secret that his sinister parents kept hidden from him,' but that is only the first 66% of this film. In a very Hitchcockian way you really have two movies here, some of the most unique imagery and shadow play seen in a very long time, and a haunting story that lives in the moody autumn that is to come. Listen to Bobby and I battle it out over this film, and please leave a 5-star hitter review and your thoughts on Cobweb! And Dracula on a boat for that matter!

Cobweb is a one-of & no rules Halloween tale! Barbarian, Coraline, and  Trick 'r Treat's stepchild, on VOD now!

As always, we truly hope you guys enjoy the film reviews and discussions, and go out and see this fantastic end of summer/ pre-spooky season horror double feature! Queue the red, auburn, and orange leaves dancing to the ground, the pumpkin in the coffees, and the horror movies on your screens! God bless, enjoy, and HURRY UP HALLOWEEN!

But wait, there's more! 'HALLOWEEN ENDS' (2022) rant towards the end of the episode, enjoy and let us know your thoughts!
