Daily Wire Backstage: 2022 Season Finale

    enDecember 15, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • A Lively Discussion on 'The Dark Knight'Despite differing opinions on 'The Dark Knight', the hosts praised Heath Ledger's Joker performance and acknowledged Christopher Nolan's unique storytelling, while expressing concerns about the Batman voice and 2-Face storyline. They also discussed the lack of original films in the upcoming movie lineup.

During a recent episode of Daily Wire Backstage, the hosts had a lively discussion about the merits of "The Dark Knight." Jeremy Boring expressed his disapproval, citing issues with the Batman voice, the 2-Face storyline, and the film's overall quality compared to the original. Ben Shapiro defended the film, acknowledging some concerns but praising Heath Ledger's Joker performance and Christopher Nolan's unique storytelling. The conversation also touched on the lack of original films in the upcoming movie lineup, with Nolan being one of the few filmmakers with the budget to create new content. Despite some disagreements, the hosts maintained a lighthearted and engaging tone throughout the episode.

    • Contemporary culture lacks grand themes in filmsThe speaker argues that contemporary films lack depth due to a cultural shift away from addressing significant questions related to morality, truth, and God.

The lack of grand, meaningful themes and questions in contemporary culture has led to a decline in great films, according to the speaker. They argue that art throughout history has addressed significant questions related to morality, truth, and God. However, in the 1960s, it was decided that these questions had been answered negatively, leaving artists without a standard to uphold or deny. As a result, films have become smaller in scope and less thought-provoking. However, the speaker does acknowledge a few exceptions, such as "The Rescue at Dunkirk," "No Country for Old Men," and "Father," which tackle big themes despite the cultural context. They also appreciate films like "The Lord of the Rings" for their technical achievements, even if they found them less engaging on a thematic level. Ultimately, the speaker believes that great films emerge when they grapple with profound questions and offer insight into the human condition.

    • A Nostalgic Look at 'Top Gun: Maverick' and Its Unrealistic PlotThe film evokes nostalgia for a time when traditional values and competence were celebrated, but its unrealistic plot disappoints. The industry's focus on modern interpretations ruins our longing for the past.

The film "Top Gun: Maverick" is a nostalgic ode to a bygone era, where traditional values and competence are celebrated, but the speaker found it sadly lacking in substance due to its unrealistic plot. The Hollywood industry's refusal to produce such films results in a culture built on nostalgia for a time when morality, male-female relationships, and American patriotism held more importance. However, the speaker acknowledges that this longing for the past may stem from the innocence of childhood and the nostalgia for one's own upbringing. Yet, they argue that the industry not only refuses to let us be nostalgic about the past but also ruins it through modern interpretations. Despite the film's flaws, the speaker found enjoyment in it, recognizing its value as a fan service and a reminder of a time when things were perceived differently.

    • Exploring morality and justice through classic TV showsClassic TV shows like Gunsmoke focused on morality and justice, with Matt Dillon embodying justice, and modern shows focus on character flaws. Listeners are encouraged to consider the value of timeless storytelling and life insurance.

The early television shows, like Gunsmoke, offer a different kind of storytelling compared to modern shows. While modern shows focus on a character's journey to overcome their flaws, shows from the 1960s, like Gunsmoke, are more about the exploration of morality and justice. The supporting characters bring color and interest to these shows, with Matt Dillon serving as the embodiment of justice. The speaker also expresses nostalgia for classic films from the 1930s to the 1960s, which he believes are some of the best storytelling forms. He acknowledges that there are great shows on TV today but laments the loss of the spirit that moved storytellers to create timeless classics in the past. He also encourages listeners to consider getting life insurance as they age.

    • Comparing Policygenius and Entertainment MediaPolicygenius simplifies life insurance buying with expert advice and no added fees, while entertainment media offers intriguing ideas and debatable content

Policygenius provides an efficient and trustworthy way to find and purchase affordable life insurance policies, with licensed agents who offer unbiased advice and no added fees. Meanwhile, in the world of entertainment, the science fiction movie "The Peripheral" by William Gibson and Scott B. Smith showcases intriguing ideas but has a confusing narrative. In contrast, the show "Severance" offers unique conversational elements, while "Harry and Meghan" on Netflix sparks controversy and debate. It's important to recognize and celebrate significant human achievements, rather than criticizing those who have accomplished less.

    • The Disdain for Competence and Dignity in SocietySociety's growing disdain for competence and dignity is evident in various aspects of life, leading to poor writing and a lack of respect for oneself. This trend is due to the criticism of meritocracy and the loss of rituals and formalities.

There's a growing hatred of competence and dignity in society, leading to poor writing and a lack of respect for oneself. This disdain for competence and formality is evident in various aspects of life, including movies, politics, and fashion. The speaker argues that competence suggests a meritocracy, which is often criticized, and that the prevalence of incompetence in media is due to the difficulty of writing intelligent characters. The loss of rituals and formalities, such as dressing up, is also contributing to this trend, with poverty and degradation becoming culturally desirable. The speaker expresses concern about this development and believes that we should reconsider the importance of competence, dignity, and ritual in our lives.

    • The need for justification of traditions in modern societyEmbrace traditions with understanding, focusing on reasons when necessary, rather than being paralyzed by the constant need for justification.

While traditions and rituals can provide nourishment and pleasure in life, the shift in modern society towards questioning every tradition and requiring a rational explanation for its existence can be overwhelming. The Talmud, for instance, explains the reason behind wearing fringes on garments as a reminder of one's obligations and submission to a higher power. However, in today's world, we are expected to provide a reason for every tradition, from wearing a suit to getting married. This constant need for justification can be paralyzing and may lead us to overlook the importance of traditions and the wisdom they hold. The idea that reason and taste are the same in Hebrew, ta'am, emphasizes that while we may not always need a reason to engage in a tradition, it can enhance our experience. Instead of constantly defending traditions, we should focus on understanding the challenges to them and addressing them with clear and compelling reasons.

    • The End of the Debate on Same-Sex Marriage?Despite the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, the debate on same-sex marriage continues to evolve, with concerns about potential infringement on individual freedoms and traditional family structures.

During a recent discussion, it was highlighted that the passing of the Respect for Marriage Act in the United States, which enshrines same-sex marriage, was being presented as a final compromise and the end of the debate. However, past statements from President Biden and the history of the issue suggest that this may not be the case. The president, who once voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, has since shifted his stance and now labels those opposed to same-sex marriage as bigots and hateful. The Act, which was initially about protecting individual rights in private matters, has expanded to include mandates for businesses and educational institutions to align with certain values, raising concerns about the potential infringement on individual freedoms and the destruction of traditional family structures. The debate around marriage equality continues to evolve, and it is crucial to remain vigilant and informed about the potential implications of such legislation.

    • Discussion on potential infringement of personal freedoms and religious liberties with the Respect for Marriage ActThe Respect for Marriage Act raises concerns about personal freedoms and religious liberties, potentially impacting private businesses and homes, and could be a stepping stone for further changes in societal values.

The Respect for Marriage Act, as discussed, raises concerns about potential infringement on personal freedoms and religious liberties. The speaker argues that the act could lead to further erosion of traditional values and potentially impact private businesses and homes. They believe that the left's agenda doesn't stop at this issue and that the only thing preventing more extensive changes is the Supreme Court. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of individual rights and the ability to define relationships as they see fit. Additionally, they endorse Helix mattresses for a good night's sleep and encourage listeners to try them out for themselves.

    • Balancing individual rights and religious freedomsThe complex debate surrounding religious liberty and human rights requires understanding historical, philosophical, and societal contexts to find a balance between respecting individual rights and upholding religious freedoms.

The debate surrounding religious liberty and human rights, particularly in relation to same-sex marriage, is complex and nuanced. Some argue that once human rights are established, religious institutions must comply, leading to the potential erosion of religious liberty. Others maintain that individuals and religious institutions should have the right to practice their beliefs, even if they go against societal norms. The discussion also touched on the origins of natural rights and the role of government in defining right and wrong. Ultimately, the conversation highlighted the importance of understanding the historical, philosophical, and societal contexts surrounding these issues. It's a delicate balance between respecting individual rights and upholding religious freedoms, a balance that continues to be debated and explored.

    • Societal implications of same-sex marriageThe normalization of same-sex marriage has led to significant societal changes, making it unlikely that efforts to reverse this trend through legislation will be successful. Instead, addressing underlying issues like no-fault divorce and ethical concerns in reproductive technologies may be more productive.

The definition of marriage has evolved to include same-sex couples, and this change has significant societal implications. While individuals may hold personal beliefs about the issue, the reality is that millions of people have restructured their lives around this new definition, leading to the normalization of same-sex marriage. Trying to reverse this societal shift through legislation, like the repeal of Obergefell, may not be feasible. Instead, focusing on addressing the underlying issues, such as the normalization of no-fault divorce and the ethical concerns surrounding practices like IVF and single parent adoption, could be more productive. Ultimately, people's ability to love and form relationships should be respected, regardless of societal recognition or legal sanction.

    • Progressing towards new ideas while acknowledging complexitiesStrive for progress and improvement, acknowledging complexities and challenges, while focusing on ideals and practicalities.

While there are differences between various social issues such as abortion, adoption law, gay marriage, and changing societal norms, the ability to move forward and progress towards new ideas does not mean we can go backwards. The conversation touched upon the idea that societal changes, like recognizing gay marriage or upholding traditional marriage, can be beneficial and improve societal conditions. The practical implications of implementing such changes can be complex, but the focus should be on the ideal and the ultimate goal. The conversation also touched upon the idea that sometimes, the left and the right approach these discussions differently, with the left focusing more on ideals and less on practical implications, while the right tends to focus too much on practicalities and less on ideals. Ultimately, the goal should be to strive for progress and improvement, while acknowledging the complexities and challenges that come with societal change.

    • Supporting veterans and enjoying holiday discounts at Black Rifle Coffee CompanyBlack Rifle Coffee Company offers discounts during the holiday season and supports veteran causes, while acknowledging the importance of respecting fundamental truths.

Black Rifle Coffee Company offers high-quality coffee products and supports veteran causes. During the holiday season, customers can enjoy a 10% discount on coffee, gear, apparel, and coffee club subscriptions by using the promo code "backstage." The company's dedication to serving excellent coffee and fostering a strong American culture is reflected in its veteran-led teams and commitment to giving back. Another important point discussed was the significance of acknowledging and respecting fundamental truths, such as the definition of a woman. The speaker emphasized that attempting to redefine these truths will not change their inherent nature and could lead to detrimental consequences for society. In summary, Black Rifle Coffee Company provides excellent coffee and supports a worthy cause, while the importance of acknowledging and respecting fundamental truths was also highlighted in the conversation.

    • Religious institutions weakening traditions and valuesWeakening traditional teachings and values in religious institutions has led to a loss of identity, attendance, and the acceptance of practices like divorce, remarriage, and gay marriage.

Many religious institutions, including churches and synagogues, have weakened their traditional teachings and values in an attempt to modernize, leading to a loss of identity and attendance. This surrender to secular values and individual conscience over obedience to the church has resulted in the erosion of key tenets, such as the sanctity of marriage. Once these foundational principles were compromised, it became easier for societal norms to shift further, ultimately leading to the acceptance of practices like divorce, remarriage, and gay marriage. The loss of these core values has left many questioning the relevance of religious institutions, and it's likely that in the future, there may be fewer people attending churches or synagogues altogether. The importance of tradition and obedience to the church's authority was emphasized as a means to preserve and strengthen these institutions.

    • The shift towards individual desires and sexual identity has led to the destruction of traditional family structures and duties. The emphasis on individual desires and sexual identity has led to a focus on self over societal responsibilities, resulting in negative consequences for society.

The redefinition of marriage and family units over the past 50 years, coupled with the emphasis on individual desires and sexual identity, has led to the destruction of traditional family structures and duties. This shift has atomized individuals and prioritized personal desires over societal responsibilities. The speaker argues that the best work in art and literature often comes from those who suppress their sexual desires and focus on creating something beautiful, and that the idea that one's sexual identity is the core of their being is a satanic concept. The speaker also notes that great works have been produced by individuals who are not conventionally straight, and that sublimation, or channeling desires into creative pursuits, was once a valued concept. Overall, the speaker's perspective is that societal changes have led to a focus on individual desires at the expense of societal responsibilities, and that this trend has had negative consequences.

    • The Information Crisis: Truth or Falsehood? The information age has led to an overwhelming amount of data, making it challenging to distinguish truth from falsehood. Critical thinking and fact-checking are essential to navigate this crisis.

The information age has brought about an information crisis, making it increasingly difficult to discern truth from falsehood. Orson Bean, a man known for his belief in orgone energy and its ability to cure various issues, serves as an example of how easily people can be swayed by unconventional ideas. Similarly, the case of Sam Bankman-Fried's arrest raises questions about the reliability of sources and the role of intermediary institutions. The discussion also touched upon the controversy surrounding COVID-19 vaccines and the lack of transparency and accountability from authorities regarding their safety and efficacy. Overall, the information crisis leaves us uncertain about the validity of claims and the need for critical thinking and fact-checking.

    • Celebrating traditions and values during the holiday seasonConsider gifting a Jeremy's Razor or Daily Wire membership with a discount, embrace holiday spirit, and preserve important values and traditions.

The holiday season is a time for giving and celebrating, and it's important to stand up for traditions and values that bring people together. During this season, consider purchasing a Jeremy's Razor as a gift for the special man in your life who may be feeling under threat to his masculinity. It's also the last chance to order a Daily Wire Plus membership or merchandise with a 30% discount and receive them before Christmas. Furthermore, the speakers emphasized the importance of living in a culture that celebrates Christmas and the significance of religious beliefs in shaping a better world. They also acknowledged the importance of Christians taking their faith seriously and not being offended when wished a Merry Christmas. Ultimately, they encouraged everyone to embrace the holiday spirit and continue the struggle for preserving important values and traditions.

    • The spirit of Christmas: joy and givingThe Christmas season is about spreading joy and giving gifts, as seen in 'Charlie Brown Christmas' and secret Santa exchanges.

The spirit of the holiday season, as depicted in the classic "Charlie Brown Christmas" special, is about receiving good news and spreading joy to all people. Despite the humble beginnings and simple animation of the production, it has touched the hearts of many and become a cherished tradition. The Christmas season also brings about the practice of giving gifts to one another, even if it results in unexpected or humorous outcomes. The excitement and anticipation of the secret Santa gift exchange is a reminder of the joy and surprise that comes with receiving a thoughtful present.

226 - The Dark Knight Rises

226 - The Dark Knight Rises

"Bane is funny. He's got jokes"

After 8 years of being a recluse, hidden away from the world, Bruce Wayne dons the Batman cowl and the Dark Knight returns. Thematically, it makes sense to release this episode under similar circumstances. Recorded last Summer before things kinda went more than a bit to shit, sometimes you gotta slap on the knee brace and kick some bricks.

Listen as we talk about Bane's voice, Batman's voice, some Robin bullshit, Bruce freeing murderers from prison via rope, scuba masks, the funniest death of all time, knee braces, Catwoman's reckless ponytails, Bane being a master of suble comedy, the contents of Bruce Wayne's prison satchel,  Batman being a massive mouth-breathing hypocrite, THAT death rattle, umbrellas, aggressive power companies, Gordan being a terrible cop in every imaginable way. Batman being a terrible trash talker, ticking clock accuracy and John Blake's non-existent Batman training. All that plus Fun Facts, and Tenzie awards!
