    en-usMarch 18, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Personal experiences inspiring mental well-being solutionsPersonal experiences can lead individuals to create innovative solutions for mental well-being, as seen in Moe's investment in Jaaq, founded by Danny Gray to address men's mental health issues, inspired by his own experiences.

Personal experiences can drive individuals to create innovative solutions for improving mental well-being and overall quality of life. Moe Gaudet, the host of the Slow Mo podcast, shares how a friend's encouragement led him to meet Danny Gray, the founder of Jaaq, a startup focused on mental well-being. Moe was deeply moved by the app's demo and decided to invest in the company and join its board of directors. Jaaq's mission resonated with Moe due to its free component, which has the potential to make a significant impact on mental well-being. Danny Gray's passion for the cause stems from his personal experience, as he was inspired to create a solution for men's mental health after struggling with his own mental health issues during his childhood. His determination to help others avoid the pain he experienced has fueled his entrepreneurial journey and the creation of Jaaq. This story highlights the importance of personal experiences in driving individuals to make a difference and the potential impact that can result from addressing mental health issues.

    • Bullying's lasting impact on self-perception and mental healthBullying can lead to profound self-perception issues and mental health struggles, impacting individuals for a lifetime.

Bullying at a young age can have profound and lasting effects on a person's self-perception and mental health. The speaker shares his experience of being bullied for his ears at the age of 12, which led to a lifelong obsession with his appearance and a reliance on makeup to hide his perceived flaws. The bullying incident also triggered a series of other body image issues, including acne and perceived hair loss. The speaker describes the hours he spent getting ready each day and the anger and frustration he felt, even when others complimented him. He eventually reached a breaking point in his late twenties, leading to destructive behaviors. The speaker emphasizes that the bullying incidents reconfigured his view of himself and his ability to deal with the world. Thousands of people are likely suffering from similar experiences, and it's essential to understand the inner workings of this issue to help those affected.

    • Personal Experience with Body Dysmorphic DisorderBody Dysmorphic Disorder can cause individuals to have obsessive thoughts about their appearance, leading to hours spent getting ready and anxiety when under time pressure. It can shift from one body part to another and control one's life.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where individuals have an obsessive thought about their appearance. Dan, the speaker, shares his personal experience of having BDD, which made him spend hours getting ready due to his hypercritical perception of his looks. He didn't realize that this was a disorder at the time, but it eventually controlled his life. Dan's anxiety would spike when someone put a time pressure on him to get ready, causing him to offer to get ready multiple times. He would sometimes force himself to go out even when he didn't feel comfortable, and his anxiety would make him feel as if people were judging him. Dan's obsession shifted from his ears to his hair and eventually to his clothes. He shares that he still struggles with feeling comfortable in his appearance, but he has learned to manage it better. It's important to note that everyone has some form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder, but for some, it can become debilitating and control their lives.

    • Hidden mental health struggles impact lives significantlyCreating a supportive environment and addressing mental health concerns early can prevent crises and encourage open conversations.

Mental health struggles, such as Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), can be deeply hidden and impact individuals' lives significantly. The speaker shared his personal experience of hating his voice and appearance, which he thought was horrible, but others found interesting and appealing. He didn't seek help until crisis hit, which is a common trend in mental health issues. The average length between the onset of symptoms and seeking help is ten years. The speaker's mother-in-law was the one who noticed his struggle and encouraged him to seek help. Mental health issues can be more severe than they appear on the surface, and it's essential to create a supportive environment for those struggling to speak up. The speaker's empathetic approach to sharing his story and desire to help others who may be struggling with similar issues is inspiring. It's crucial to address mental health concerns before they escalate into crises and encourage open conversations about mental health.

    • Importance of Support Networks and Understanding Mental HealthExpressing struggles with mental health to a supportive friend can provide reassurance and allow time for self-care. Creating products for underserved markets can also lead to personal growth and entrepreneurial success.

Having a strong support network and being open about struggling with mental health can make a significant difference. The speaker shared how he felt more comfortable expressing his struggles to his friend, who provided reassurance and allowed him to take the time he needed. This experience highlighted the importance of friends and family understanding mental health issues as much as the person experiencing them. Additionally, the speaker's experience with wearing makeup led him to create Warpaint, a brand designed for men who want to use makeup but don't want to appear glamorous. He recognized the need for education and products tailored to men, as existing brands didn't meet their needs. The speaker's philosophy is that people should do things that make them feel good, as long as they're not harming others. This personal journey of self-care and acceptance, along with his entrepreneurial spirit, led him to create Warpaint and continue learning how to manage his mental health.

    • A boy with rosacea finds confidence with War PaintThe founder of War Paint discovered the true potential of her brand when a 16-year-old boy with rosacea gained newfound confidence after using it. She emphasized the importance of mental health and creating safe spaces for people to express themselves and find solutions to their struggles.

Everyone, regardless of age or gender, faces struggles and challenges, and it's essential to create products or services that cater to these needs and help improve people's lives. The founder of War Paint shared a heartwarming story about a 16-year-old boy with rosacea who felt uncomfortable in his skin and refused to take photos or go out. However, after trying War Paint, he gained newfound confidence, leading the founder to realize the true potential and purpose of her brand. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of mental health and how it's not just about negative conditions but also about overall well-being and self-care. Everyone has something they're dealing with, and it's crucial to normalize these conversations and create safe spaces for people to express themselves and find solutions. The founder's journey with War Paint taught her that everyone has a story and that it's essential to listen, empathize, and create solutions that address the root cause of people's struggles.

    • From hiding personal struggles to sharing a brand's storySharing a brand's story and purpose can create deeper connections with consumers and address unmet needs beyond the product.

A brand's story and purpose can be more impactful than the product itself. The creator of War Paint, a makeup brand, initially kept her personal struggle with body dysmorphic disorder hidden due to fear of judgment from outsiders. When the brand faced criticism, she decided to share her story publicly, leading to an outpouring of support and understanding. This shift in focus from product to story led to unexpected connections with consumers, including those who weren't ready for makeup but appreciated the brand's message about mental health. Additionally, the creator realized the lack of readily available information for those seeking help for mental health issues and began providing support and resources through personal conversations. The power of sharing a brand's story and mission can create a deeper connection with consumers and address unmet needs beyond the product.

    • Creating a safe space for mental health informationAccess to reliable mental health information from experts is crucial during the initial stages of seeking help. A safe space for personalized guidance and support could significantly improve the landscape.

Access to accurate and empathetic mental health information is crucial, especially during the initial stages of seeking help. During the first few sessions with specialists, individuals are often overwhelmed and may not fully process the information given. The internet, while a valuable resource, can be overwhelming and not curated specifically for mental health. The concept of creating a safe space where individuals can access reliable mental health information from experts could significantly change the landscape. The lack of accessible and effective mental health resources, even for successful individuals, highlights the importance of addressing this gap. Despite the abundance of mental health content online, individuals continue to seek personalized guidance and support, emphasizing the need for a more effective and empathetic approach to mental health information.

    • Question-based mental health platformProviding accurate and relatable answers to mental health questions through a user-led experience

The idea of starting a question-based platform for seeking answers, especially on mental health topics, can be more effective and engaging than traditional long-form content. Jack's platform, which pre-records experts answering specific questions, offers a user-led experience where individuals can find the most relevant answers to their queries, rather than sifting through lengthy videos on platforms like YouTube. The conversational style of filming and the focus on mental health make it a potentially valuable resource for those who aren't yet ready to engage in deeper conversations about their concerns. Unlike some organizations that create foundations to merely tick a box, Jack's vision for his platform was to genuinely help people by providing them with accurate and relatable answers to their questions.

    • Shifting from charity to profitability for sustainabilityTo sustainably support mental health, a business model that generates revenue through contracts and products was chosen over relying on fundraising.

Creating a charity for a mental health platform was initially considered, but the need for sustainable funding led to the shift towards building a profitable business while keeping the platform free for everyone. The founder learned from past experiences that relying heavily on fundraising can be ineffective and detract from the core mission. Instead, generating revenue through contracts and products allows the business to invest in research and development, ultimately changing the world for the better. The free platform, Jack.org, will continue to provide valuable resources, while the new workplace version, Jack for Business, will offer customized solutions to organizations. This balanced approach ensures a sustainable business model that remains committed to mental health support for all.

    • Addressing Corporate Mental Health Needs with JackMoe, a happiness teacher, offers a free mental health platform called Jack to corporations to help their employees, funded by corporate sponsors. She ensures her efforts are reciprocated and uses a similar approach for non-profits and events.

There is a significant need for accessible mental health and well-being resources in the corporate world. Moe, a happiness teacher, has identified this gap and is addressing it through a free platform called Jack. Corporates are drawn to Jack due to its free access and the potential to help their employees, ultimately funding the platform. Moe acknowledges the importance of corporate sponsors but wants to ensure her efforts and costs are reciprocated. She uses a similar approach with speaking engagements, offering her services for free to non-profits and events that won't generate profit. The crisis of mental health and well-being in corporations is prevalent, with low utilization rates for existing apps and services. Moe aims to bridge this gap by providing information and resources on Jack, allowing employees to access and use them proactively, ultimately improving overall engagement and well-being.

    • Early intervention and prevention save money and improve healthBy focusing on prevention and early intervention, we can potentially reduce the need for costly treatments in areas like cancer and mental health, and improve overall health.

Early intervention and prevention are key to saving money in the NHS and improving overall health, particularly in areas like cancer and mental health. The idea is to provide a platform, like Jack, where people can access information, learn about small changes they can make in their daily lives, and have discreet conversations with others who have experienced similar challenges. This approach can help individuals address issues before they become more serious and require costly interventions. Additionally, creating a cool and relatable mental health brand can make a significant difference in reaching young people and encouraging them to seek help earlier. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, we can potentially reduce the need for more intensive and costly treatments down the line.

    • Early intervention crucial for speech impediments and mental health issuesSeeking professional help within 2 years significantly increases chances of recovery. Understanding root causes and accessing clinical info & personal experiences can provide a holistic approach.

Early intervention is crucial when dealing with speech impediments or mental health issues. Delaying action for more than two years can significantly decrease the chances of recovery. It's essential to understand the root cause of the issue and seek professional help as soon as possible. Additionally, having access to both clinical information from experts and personal experiences from individuals with lived experience can provide a more holistic approach to understanding and addressing these issues. Creating a platform where people can easily access this information from a range of sources, including well-known figures, can help break down stigmas and make mental health resources more approachable.

    • Understanding Depression vs. UnhappinessDepression is more than just sadness, it's important to seek professional help, technology can provide access to expert advice and lived experiences, but approach AI with caution for authenticity and transparency.

While it's important to recognize and understand the signs of depression, it's equally crucial to distinguish it from simple unhappiness. The experience of someone who has lived through depression can provide significant hope and reassurance. While technology and artificial intelligence have their limitations, they can also be valuable tools in providing access to expert advice and lived experiences. However, as we embrace the advancements in AI, it's essential to approach it with caution and ensure transparency and authenticity in the information it provides. In essence, the intersection of human experience and technology can offer a powerful combination in supporting individuals in their mental health journey.

    • Connecting users with real experts for meaningful conversations and answersJack.org connects users with real experts, using AI technology to deliver authentic answers, with a focus on enhancing human happiness and well-being, potentially alleviating mental health challenges, and is free to use with feedback and ideas for improvement encouraged.

Jack, an innovative platform, aims to connect users with real experts to answer their questions and shift their perspectives in a meaningful way. The power of this platform lies in its authentic conversations and AI technology that delivers the best answers. By focusing on applications that enhance human happiness and well-being, AI can become more attuned to our needs. The speaker, a strong advocate for using technology for good, believes Jack could revolutionize the way we find answers and potentially alleviate mental health challenges. The key to happiness, according to the speaker, is surrounding yourself with supportive people who believe in you. Jack.org is free to use, and feedback and ideas for improvement are welcome. The speaker emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health struggles, as many people may be dealing with them in silence.

    • Taking Care of Your Mental Health is ImportantMake time for self-reflection, prioritize mental health check-ins, and don't hesitate to seek support when needed to improve overall wellbeing.

Taking care of our mental health is just as important as physical health, and it's crucial to prioritize it, especially during challenging times. If you're experiencing emotional discomfort or feeling anything less than optimal, don't hesitate to reach out for support. Make time for self-reflection and consider talking to someone about what's bothering you. Your mental wellbeing is valuable, and it's essential to create an environment where you can slow down and focus on yourself. By dedicating even just an hour a week to mental health check-ins, we can better manage stress and improve overall wellbeing. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and take care of yourself. So, continue to be curious about your mental health and prioritize self-care.

Antonio Wedral: Blending SEO Innovation with Well-Being

Antonio Wedral: Blending SEO Innovation with Well-Being

Antonio Wedral is the co-founder of Novos, an e-commerce SEO agency making waves in London by helping brands pivot from paid advertising to a more sustainable, SEO-driven approach. Our conversation traversed the inspiring journey of Novos, emphasizing the power of people-centric business models, the transformative potential of SEO in e-commerce, and the crucial balance between professional ambition and personal well-being.

Antonio's entrepreneurial spirit was ignited by his parents' resilience, who, after fleeing the Yugoslav war, had to start anew in the UK. This foundational story is not just a tale of starting over but a lesson in perseverance and vision. "My parents...had to start everything from scratch...I think it probably put something within me where it just had like a motivation within me," Antonio shared, underscoring the profound impact of his family's experience on his ambition to create a business that puts people first.

At the heart of Novos' philosophy is a commitment to building a company that values its employees as much as its clients. Antonio and his co-founder envisioned an agency that was not only a leader in SEO but also a champion for workplace culture. "We want to work with really cool clients...let's make this the best place to work in the UK," Antonio explained, highlighting their dual focus on client satisfaction and employee well-being.

Antonio's insights into the SEO industry reveal a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities present in the digital marketing space. He articulated the agency's mission to empower brands by reducing their reliance on paid advertising and increasing their visibility organically. This approach not only helps businesses achieve financial independence but also fosters a deeper connection with their audience.

Moreover, Antonio touched on the importance of recognizing and addressing the mental toll that comes with entrepreneurship. His personal journey underscores the necessity of finding balance, stating, "You can't be super successful if you're burnt out. You need to find a balance." This candid reflection on mental health is a vital reminder for all professionals to prioritize their well-being alongside their career ambitions.

Listeners can glean several key takeaways from this episode:

    • The significance of a people-first approach in business.
    • The transformative power of SEO for e-commerce brands.
    • The importance of workplace culture in attracting talent and fostering innovation.
    • The necessity of balance between professional success and personal health.

Antonio's story is not just about the success of Novos; it's a broader narrative on the potential to revolutionize industries by focusing on the human element, whether it's through the services offered or the culture cultivated within.

Ep. 3: Business Owners Who Have Depression and Anxiety

Ep. 3: Business Owners Who Have Depression and Anxiety

In today’s coaching session, I’m working with Cora, a pet business owner who struggles with occasional bouts of depression and anxiety. This causes her to suffer - and her business to suffer.

When she’s not experiencing depression and anxiety, her energy level is high, her response time to clients is quick, and she’s able to invoice clients in a prompt manner as well as do other necessary business tasks.

However, when she’s going through a challenging emotional time, things look very different: it can take her a week or two to return client calls, it can be like slogging through quicksand to bill her clients in a timely manner and she has very little energy to run her business. She feels physically and mentally stopped.

If you also experience depression or anxiety, this may sound familiar to you.

Now, you know this (but I have to say this to protect myself, and to protect you listeners): I’m not a therapist nor a medical doctor. I’m a business and life coach.

If you are suffering from depression or anxiety, please talk to a medical professional.

In today’s coaching session, I’m not trying to diagnose Cora, nor cure her anxiety or depression. I can’t do that, nor would attempt to do that.

I am simply having a conversation with Cora about depression and anxiety and how it impacts her business and her life. I’m not trying to fix Cora’s depression or anxiety but rather to help her better navigate her business during the challenging times.

Again, if you’re struggling with depression or anxiety, please get help from a medical professional.

Thank you to Cora for having the courage to come on this podcast and be a voice for those of you who suffer from depression and anxiety and are also trying to run your business, raise your kids, and/or navigate your personal and work life.

Even if you don’t experience depression and anxiety, you may know someone who does, and this episode may help you feel more empathy and compassion for this often-silent challenge that can be crippling in ways that cannot be seen.
