#DeSaster on Twitter, NVIDIA’s Potential Stock Market Record, & A $22.5 Million Ghost Town?!

    enMay 25, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Twitter Spaces technical issues overshadow DeSantis' presidential announcementDespite Musk's involvement, last night's Twitter Spaces event for DeSantis' presidential announcement was plagued by technical issues, poor audio quality, and criticism, overshadowing the announcement itself.

Last night's Twitter Spaces event where Ron DeSantis announced his presidential candidacy turned out to be a technical disaster. The servers melted down, causing the first space to be closed and a new one to be opened. Despite the hype surrounding Musk's involvement, the event was marred by bugs and poor audio quality. DeSantis' announcement was overshadowed by criticism from all sides, including President Biden. Meanwhile, on a lighter note, today is the busiest travel day before Memorial Day weekend, putting airport Wi-Fi to the test. In other news, NVIDIA is on the verge of breaking a stock market record, and we remember the life of Tina Turner, who was honored by various organizations, including the Australian Rugby League.

    • Clash between Elon Musk, Ron DeSantis, and Fox NewsElon Musk hosted Ron DeSantis' campaign announcement on Twitter, but the event was met with criticism and Fox News declared a war on Musk, highlighting the ongoing power struggles and shifting dynamics in the media landscape.

Last night saw a significant clash between Elon Musk, Ron DeSantis, and Fox News. Musk attempted to make a splash by hosting DeSantis' campaign announcement on Twitter, but the event was met with criticism and mockery from all sides. Fox News, feeling snubbed, responded by declaring their own war on Musk. The incident marked a continuation of Musk's efforts to position Twitter as a conservative media outlet, with moves like the Daily Wire's podcast shift and Tucker Carlson's show relocation. Despite the rocky launch, Musk's move generated significant buzz, though it was largely negative. Ron DeSantis took a risk by launching his campaign on Twitter, echoing Barack Obama's 2008 embrace of social media. However, the event did not go smoothly, and Musk faced backlash for his involvement. The clash between Musk, DeSantis, and Fox News underscores the ongoing power struggles and shifting dynamics in the media landscape.

    • NVIDIA's Generative AI Surge: A Tech Industry TrendsetterNVIDIA's impressive earnings report and optimistic outlook fueled a record-breaking stock surge, solidifying their position as the industry leader in generative AI technology.

The tech industry is seeing significant growth, particularly in the area of generative AI, with NVIDIA leading the charge. DeSantis's botched Twitter launch was a setback for him, while Musk's quick-moving approach allowed him to brush off similar issues. NVIDIA's stock market value surged by an unprecedented amount after their earnings report, indicating strong investor confidence in the company's ability to capitalize on the generative AI trend. The CEO's optimistic outlook and impressive sales figures further fueled the stock surge. This AI gold rush has companies investing heavily in the technology, and NVIDIA is currently the biggest beneficiary.

    • NVIDIA's Growth Amidst Declines and Debt Ceiling ThreatsNVIDIA's growth in data centers, autonomous and electric vehicles contributes to potential entry into trillion-dollar market cap club, but US debt ceiling debate poses risk to financial stability and credit rating

NVIDIA is experiencing significant growth despite overall sales declines, driven by their involvement in various technological booms, including data centers, autonomous and electric vehicles. This growth has contributed to NVIDIA's potential entry into the trillion-dollar market cap club. However, a looming threat to the financial stability of the United States is the ongoing debt ceiling debate, which has put the US credit rating on notice for a possible downgrade by Fitch. Even if a resolution is reached, the continued existence of the debt ceiling could lead to future downgrades due to the ongoing political partisanship.

    • US lacks Triple A rating from all rating agenciesThe US credit rating is AA+ from S&P and Fitch, Aa1 from Moody's since 2009, which could lead to increased borrowing costs if it drops further. Ongoing debt ceiling negotiations may impact rating and costs.

The US does not hold a Triple A rating from all three major credit rating agencies (Fitch, S&P, and Moody's). Currently, the US has an AA+ rating from S&P and Fitch, while Moody's still rates it Aa1. This rating has remained unchanged since 2009. A lower credit rating can lead to increased borrowing costs, similar to how a lower personal credit score affects securing loans. Countries with a Triple A rating from Fitch include Australia, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, and Singapore. The ongoing debt ceiling negotiations between the US government and Congress could potentially impact the US credit rating and borrowing costs if an agreement is not reached. Tina Turner, a legendary singer who passed away recently, is known for her impact on popular culture and even played a role in enhancing the commercial appeal of Australian rugby through a series of ads featuring her music.

    • Unexpected collaboration between Tina Turner and Australian rugbyTina Turner's manager secured a deal with Australian rugby, expanding its reach and creating a newfound love for Turner in Australia. Turner, a legendary artist with a remarkable career, holds the record for the largest playing concert audience and has had a top 40 hit in seven different decades in Britain.

The connection between Tina Turner and Australian rugby was a serendipitous and mutually beneficial one. At a time when the Australian rugby league was struggling for legitimacy and economic prospects, the league's CEO's assistant, through a friend, managed to secure an unexpected collaboration with Tina Turner's manager. The result was a significant expansion of the league's reach and a newfound love for Turner in Australia. Turner, a legendary artist with a remarkable career, holds the record for the largest playing concert audience for a solo artist ever, performing for over 180,000 fans in Rio de Janeiro in 1988. She is also the first artist to have a top 40 hit in seven different decades in Britain. The Australian rugby league may have gotten a better deal in the collaboration, but Turner's lasting appeal and ability to captivate audiences in different decades is truly remarkable. Another interesting fact to note is the dominance of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai restaurants in the United States, according to a recent Pew report. These three cuisines make up a significant portion of the Asian restaurant landscape in the country.

    • Asian Food Diversity in the USChinese and Japanese food dominate the US Asian restaurant scene, but they don't represent the full diversity of Asian populations. Thai food's popularity growth is due to government efforts and California rolls, while hyperinflation in Argentina impacts its economy and daily life, and F1 drivers have a consistent blinking pattern on the track.

The food industry in the US reflects an interesting dynamic when it comes to representing the diversity of Asian populations. While Chinese, Japanese, and Thai food make up the vast majority of Asian restaurants, these cuisines only serve a third of the Asian population. Chinese food is the clear leader, with Japanese food experiencing significant growth due to innovations like conveyor belts and California rolls. Thai food's popularity is attributed to the Thai government's efforts in culinary diplomacy, which has led to a larger number of Thai restaurants despite a smaller Thai population. Meanwhile, in Argentina, hyperinflation has led to the release of a new 2,000 peso bill, worth only $4, as prices rise by 109% annually. The country's economy is expected to tip into a recession, and the central bank has raised interest rates to a staggering 97% to combat inflation. In the world of racing, Formula 1 drivers tend to blink at the same place on the track during each lap, specifically on straightaways where they aren't changing speeds. This finding challenges the previous belief that people blink at random intervals.

    • Distractions in High-Speed EnvironmentsIn high-speed environments, even small distractions like blinking can lead to significant losses. Seemingly insignificant purchases can also hold hidden value or potential.

Even the smallest distractions, like blinking, can have significant consequences, especially in high-speed environments like racing. Formula 1 drivers, for instance, can lose over a third of a mile of visual information per minute due to blinking. In the business world, this could translate to missing crucial information or opportunities. On a lighter note, a ghost town in California named Eagle Mountain was sold for $22.5 million to a company named Ecology Mountain Holdings. While the identity of the buyer remains a mystery to some, others speculate it could be a strategic move similar to Walt Disney's land acquisitions in Florida. The takeaway here is that seemingly insignificant purchases can hold hidden value or potential.

    • Exploring Ghost Towns vs Thai RestaurantsRespect individual travel preferences and find joy in various experiences, like exploring ghost towns or dining at Thai restaurants.

Despite the historical significance of ghost towns in Colorado, Arizona, and California due to silver mining, they may not hold the same level of interest for some travelers. Instead, these individuals might prefer exploring other experiences like dining at Thai restaurants. It's essential to recognize and respect personal preferences when planning trips. The Twitter spaces started out with some technical difficulties, but once it got going the event went well.  What I liked about it is that I didn't see anyone, all I could hear were the questions asked and the responses given.  It was really answers on DeSantis policies to address the issues in the United States and how to clean it up.  No name calling, almost pure policy driven discussion.  What I didn't like was for Donald Trump Jr. to post that it was a failed launch, wich was far from the truth.  Then there were Trump demenstrators in front of a hotel where DeSantis was having a fund raiser.  This type of childesh behavior turned me off, and will probably turn a lot of Americans off.  If Trump wants to express his policy, let him go on Twitter and be interviewed by Americans.  But demonstrating in front of DeSantis fund raisers - childesh.
