Shops, hairdressers and gyms will open for the first time since the start of the year. The country is recording fewer than 2,500 cases of covid-19 a day, down from a peak of nearly 55,000 in January. The sharp fall reflects both a tight lockdown and rapid vaccination campaign, thanks to which nearly half the population of England has received a first dose. The government is also employing new measures to keep cases down. Vaccine passports are being tried out at events including the final of the FA Cup, a football tournament. More rigorous contact tracing is being used to suppress worrying variants. And the government is offering twice-weekly testing to the entire population free of charge. Boris Johnson, Britain’s prime minister, acknowledges that the country’s emergence from lockdown is cautious.
