Do clear backpacks work as a deterrent to school shootings?

    enJuly 20, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Instacart vs D.I.S.D: Prioritizing Convenience vs SafetyInstacart focuses on customers' convenience, allowing them to quickly order groceries. The D.I.S.D implements clear backpacks to enhance school safety, but it doesn't guarantee complete prevention of weapons or intruders.

Instacart prioritizes convenience for customers, allowing them to order groceries quickly and easily without missing out on important events like watching a game. The Dallas Independent School District (D.I.S.D) has implemented a new policy requiring students from sixth grade to senior year to carry clear or mesh backpacks to school as a potential deterrent to school shootings. Dr. Alex Del Carmen from Tarleton State School of Criminology joined the Ask the Experts podcast to discuss the effectiveness of clear backpacks. While he acknowledges that it's a positive step, he also points out that clear backpacks do not guarantee that students will not bring weapons on their person or that intruders will not enter the school without clear backpacks. Therefore, there are still potential loopholes, but he supports the idea of moving in this direction. In summary, Instacart's convenience and the D.I.S.D's clear backpack policy are two different approaches to addressing the needs of their respective communities - Instacart prioritizing customers' time and convenience, and the D.I.S.D prioritizing students' safety.

    • Clear backpacks not foolproof for school safetyClear backpacks help but more comprehensive measures like fortifying entry points and implementing crime prevention strategies are necessary for effective school safety.

While clear backpacks may help in some instances, they are not foolproof solutions to prevent weapons from entering schools. Hiding weapons behind textbooks or bringing them in on weekends are just a few ways intruders could still access guns. The recent school safety plan, while a step in the right direction, may not be enough to fully secure schools against potential threats. The shooter in some school shootings has used long guns, not just pistols. Therefore, a more comprehensive approach to preventing crime in schools, including fortifying entry points and implementing crime prevention strategies, is necessary for effective security measures. The clear backpack initiative could be a starting point for a larger, ongoing effort to improve school safety.

    • Ensuring student safety in schoolsImprove school infrastructure, enhance law enforcement training, engage parents and students, and prioritize a safe learning environment.

Schools must prioritize the safety and security of their students amidst growing concerns of shootings. This can be achieved through improving school infrastructure, enhancing law enforcement training, and engaging parents and students in open communication about security measures. While some may argue that schools should not resemble prisons, the priority should be on providing a safe learning environment. Parents, given the choice, would prefer their children to be secure in school rather than worrying about potential threats. Therefore, schools should not shy away from implementing necessary security features. Additionally, there are ongoing sales at Ashley, offering discounts on mattresses and adjustable bases, providing an opportunity for customers to celebrate and save.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
