US News and World Report's list of best diet plans can be a valuable resource for those looking to make lasting lifestyle changes.

    • Consistently making small changes is key to New Year's resolutionsFocus on making small, sustainable changes for New Year's resolutions and identify a strong incentive to help stay committed. The Mediterranean diet is a potentially effective and sustainable choice for dietary changes due to its focus on whole foods, healthy fats, and balanced eating.

Making sustainable, small changes consistently is key to achieving and sticking to New Year's resolutions. People often fail because they try to make too many extreme changes at once, which can be overwhelming and unsustainable. Identifying a strong "why" or incentive behind your goal can also help keep you committed. The Mediterranean diet, a popular choice in US News and World Report's annual diet rankings, stands out due to its focus on whole foods, healthy fats, and balanced eating, making it a potentially effective and sustainable choice for those looking to make dietary changes.

    • Mediterranean vs Dash Diets: Key DifferencesBoth diets promote health through nutrient-rich foods, but Mediterranean emphasizes healthy fats and Dash focuses on fruits, veggies, lean proteins and low sodium.

Both the Mediterranean and Dash diets promote overall health through the consumption of nutrient-rich foods, but they have some key differences. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes the inclusion of healthy fats, such as omega-3s found in fatty fish and avocado, while the Dash diet focuses more on limiting fat intake and increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. The Mediterranean diet is less restrictive and doesn't set specific calorie or meal limits, making it more flexible for some people. On the other hand, the Dash diet, originally designed to help lower high blood pressure, recommends almost 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and very lean protein sources, with a focus on whole grains, low-fat dairy, and minimal sodium intake. Ultimately, both diets can lead to weight loss and improved health, but individuals should consider their personal preferences and dietary needs when deciding which one to follow.

    • Focus on nutrient-rich foods 80% of the time, allow for occasional indulgencesAim for 80% nutrient-dense foods, allow 20% for less healthy choices, maintain balance and healthy relationship with food

Making sustainable dietary changes doesn't mean eliminating all less nutritious foods entirely. Instead, the 80-20 rule suggests focusing on nutrient-rich foods 80% of the time, while allowing for occasional indulgences. This approach allows for flexibility and balance, without the guilt or feeling of "cheating." The key is to maintain a healthy relationship with food and not overindulge during the 20% of the time when less nutritious options are consumed. This way, the overall health benefits of eating nutrient-dense foods outweigh the occasional less healthy choices. Remember, all foods can fit, but some should fit less often.

    • Focus on nutrient-rich foods and portion control for effective weight lossEat nutrient-rich foods, learn portion control, and avoid over-reliance on less nutritious options for successful weight loss

While there are various tools and methods, such as medication or surgery, that can aid in weight loss, the most effective approach is to focus on incorporating nutrient-rich foods into your diet and learning to be satisfied with smaller portions of less nutritious options. Restriction and binge behaviors can often stem from over-reliance on these less nutritious foods, so it's important to evaluate your favorites and find ways to mix and match them with healthier choices. While medications like ozempic or regovia may help with weight loss, they are typically prescribed by medical doctors and can come with consequences when stopped. Ultimately, the key is to educate yourself and develop healthy habits that will support long-term weight management.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
