    • Prioritize Self-Care During the HolidaysConsider using services for convenience, take advantage of sales for health items, and prioritize self-care to prevent physical and mental health risks during the holiday season.

During the holiday season, prioritizing self-care is crucial despite work pressures. Instead of pushing through illness and stress, consider using services like Instacart to have essentials delivered quickly. Additionally, sales like Ashley's anniversary sale can provide opportunities to save on items like mattresses, which can contribute to better health and sleep. It's essential to remember that the holiday season can take a toll on our health, both physically and mentally, and it's important to recognize and address signs of stress and potential health risks, such as "holiday heart," which can lead to heart disease due to excessive salt or alcohol intake.

    • The holiday season can strain the heart and liverPractice moderation and prioritize self-care during the holidays to minimize risks of heart and liver issues.

The holiday season can put extra strain on the heart and liver due to various factors such as stress, unhealthy eating, and excessive alcohol consumption. People with pre-existing heart conditions are at a higher risk of acute congestive heart failure, while alcohol can weaken the heart muscle and lead to heart failure or liver failure. The holidays can also be a difficult time for those experiencing grief or loneliness, which can contribute to mental health issues and further impact physical health. It's important to practice moderation and prioritize self-care during this season to minimize the risks.

    • Staying Healthy During the Holidays: Watch Out for Alcohol and Medication Non-ComplianceThe holiday season can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol consumption, increasing the risk of serious health issues such as heart attack, stroke, and hospitalization. Additionally, neglecting medications and symptoms due to stress, busyness, or traveling can have severe consequences. Prioritize health and seek medical attention when necessary.

The holiday season can exacerbate health issues, leading people to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol. Alcohol intoxication can push individuals into serious health conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and even hospitalization. Symptoms to watch out for include shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, and chest pain. Additionally, stroke signs include inability to speak, weakness of one side of the body, or drooping of the face. It's crucial to seek help immediately if experiencing these symptoms, regardless of the holiday festivities. Another issue during this time of year is the non-compliance with medications due to stress, busyness, and traveling for those with preexisting conditions. Ignoring medications and symptoms can lead to severe health consequences. Therefore, prioritizing health and seeking medical attention when necessary should be a priority during the holiday season.

    • Maintaining healthy habits during the holiday season for heart healthStay committed to healthy habits, set realistic goals, manage stress, and avoid smoking and excessive drinking for heart health during the holiday season

Maintaining healthy habits, especially during the holiday season, is crucial for heart health. People with heart disease or risk factors should stay compliant with their medications and avoid deviating from healthy routines like exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep. Additionally, managing stress is essential as it's a risk factor for heart disease. During the holiday season, setting realistic expectations and making achievable New Year's resolutions can help maintain healthy habits without putting too much pressure on oneself. Remember, small, doable goals are key to success. And don't forget the importance of stress management and avoiding smoking and excessive drinking. In summary, staying committed to healthy habits and setting realistic goals can help keep your heart healthy during the holiday season and beyond.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
