    About this Episode

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E057 Managing Change & Transformation with Gareth Duffin

E058 Let Nature be Your Compass with Rosie Tomkins

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

E060 Motivating Your Team with Sam Glenister-Batey

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

Gareth encouraged us to blame the process not the person when something goes wrong.

Rosie inspired us to have more confidence and belief in ourselves by looking for internal validation, recognising that we have everything we need inside of us.

Hayley chose to leave us with the words of James Baldwin, “Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

Sam offered us his perspective that as leaders we should measure ourselves on the achievements of our team rather than our own work.

Susan reminded us that we are all unique. We all have a voice and should make sure that we let other people know about our opinions, ideas, and values because we will add to the conversation.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we need to look inwards to give ourselves, the confidence to take responsibility, rather than looking to blame, to face in to challenges so that we can affect change, to look and think, ‘How can I best serve my team? How can I best support them?’ And how can I ensure that I'm having conversations with people, rather than just communicating with them?”

E063 Recruiting Senior Leaders with Michael Hewlett

E063 Recruiting Senior Leaders with Michael Hewlett

In this episode, we take a deep dive into recruitment and more specifically senior leadership recruitment within the Estates/Facilities Management area of higher education. With over 25 years’ experience in this field, Michael shares with us his top tips for securing a director level role. In addition, we explore the skills universities are looking for in their senior leaders: emotional intelligence and soft skills, demonstrable experience of driving transformational change and a real understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The thing that gets people a job, are those soft skills. There will always be core things that people are looking for. They might want a degree for instance, sometimes they like to see MBAs and there's a kind of core level of competency that they expect, but what gets you the job, is the soft skills, it's the emotional intelligence. Qualifications get you in the door, but it's the other aspects that are going to get you the job.”

    ABOUT MICHAEL

Since joining The Management Recruitment Group in 2008, Michael, a founding member, is now a board director and shareholder. Specialising in education, he also spearheads niche brands University People and Schools Leadership.

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

In this episode, we take a deep dive into why it is more productive to have conversations rather than communication. As a former opera singer, Susan shares with us her five-step SuperStar Communicator methodology and why it is important to own our space and ensure that as leaders we are listening as well as speaking.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“There are a lot of things that we can do with the voice, to make it interesting, to engage our audience, but also to have that self-awareness that we could have what I call emotional leakages from our voice. We could be saying something very profound but our nerves could distract our audience and put a question mark next to our credibility.”

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

In this episode, we take a deep dive into onboarding and why it is so important. Having worked in educational recruitment for the past ten years and recently moved companies, Hayley shares with us her thoughts around what makes a successful onboarding process.  Ensuring that we don’t apply a one size fits all model is key. Other important elements include transparency, trust, and flexibility.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me onboarding isn't the first day, the second day, the third day. It's not even the first week. It's the first six months because it's a journey and you're learning. People do have to hit the ground running, but you need to have check points throughout that period, because things can change quickly, especially in the hybrid world that we work in. It can take six months, even a year for some people to really embed into an organisation and be able to flourish.”

    ABOUT HAYLEY

Hayley has supported the education sector for the last ten years, providing executive search and interim and consultancy solutions to Independent Schools, Academy Trusts, FE Colleges, and Universities. Her speciality is understanding the education sector and connecting talent that is passionate about providing high quality inclusive education. Hayley has built a track record with education leaders and helped many organisations identifying top talent.

Hayley has a passion for education, she is chair of governors for MAT working closely with the head and trust leaders to ensure excellent levels of education. She previously worked closely with England Rugby Schools to deliver inclusive sport in schools and has strong understanding of the curriculum.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“All the intelligences are important but currently it's like a three-legged stool, we've got IQ, EQ (emotional intelligence) and SQ (spiritual intelligence). For me it needs to be a four-legged chair, which includes NQ (natural intelligence) and the reason for this is because it's suppressed at the moment.”

E056 Diving Deep into Episodes 51-55

E056 Diving Deep into Episodes 51-55

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E051 Look After Your Mental Health with Rosie Tressler OBE

E052 Self-Awareness is Key with Nicola Arnold

E053 Being a Mindful Leader with Dr Reiner Kraft

E054 US Higher Education Trends with Lori Capullo

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

    *      Rosie encouraged us to be deliberate about our own mental health and get better at saying no.

    *      Nicola, meanwhile, inspired us to be a positive disruptor and asked the question, “Where are you creating space right now to do new things?”

    *      For Reiner, he wanted us to practice being mindful for one minute, starting small and building up from there.

    *      Lori reminded us of the importance of listening. Listen not to respond but truly hear what is being said.

    *      And finally, John Burns advised not to stay in a job that isn’t right for us.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Self-awareness is the greatest skill we can have as leaders because we turn our attention inwards instead of looking outside for answers. And that isn't always a comfortable process, holding a mirror up to ourselves. We have to get comfortable with who we are with knowing our superpowers, but also those blind spots that can trip us up. When we have self-awareness, we have choice. We can choose how we act and behave.”

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

In this episode, we take a deep dive into redundancy, how it feels to be made redundant and what lessons can we take away as leaders, if we ever have to manage a redundancy programme. A former accountant, John shares with us his own experience of redundancy and his insights which are helpful to both employers and employees.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For people who are made redundant, I always say give yourself a couple of months break first. Don't try and dive into doing something straight away because you have to leave your previous employer mentally. They've left you, but you still have to take that break, and mentally work through why you were made redundant, get your energy levels back up again and be more positive about life. Then you can look to your future.”
