    KEY TAKEAWAY

“I'm a strong believer in the power of daydreaming and how that can begin to change things. We can't create something unless we imagine. And we can't imagine if we are burnt out and highly stressed, it's beyond us.”

E063 Recruiting Senior Leaders with Michael Hewlett

E063 Recruiting Senior Leaders with Michael Hewlett

In this episode, we take a deep dive into recruitment and more specifically senior leadership recruitment within the Estates/Facilities Management area of higher education. With over 25 years’ experience in this field, Michael shares with us his top tips for securing a director level role. In addition, we explore the skills universities are looking for in their senior leaders: emotional intelligence and soft skills, demonstrable experience of driving transformational change and a real understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The thing that gets people a job, are those soft skills. There will always be core things that people are looking for. They might want a degree for instance, sometimes they like to see MBAs and there's a kind of core level of competency that they expect, but what gets you the job, is the soft skills, it's the emotional intelligence. Qualifications get you in the door, but it's the other aspects that are going to get you the job.”

E062 Diving Deep into Episodes 57 - 61 with Mel Loizou

E062 Diving Deep into Episodes 57 - 61 with Mel Loizou

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E057 Managing Change & Transformation with Gareth Duffin

E058 Let Nature be Your Compass with Rosie Tomkins

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

E060 Motivating Your Team with Sam Glenister-Batey

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

Gareth encouraged us to blame the process not the person when something goes wrong.

Rosie inspired us to have more confidence and belief in ourselves by looking for internal validation, recognising that we have everything we need inside of us.

Hayley chose to leave us with the words of James Baldwin, “Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

Sam offered us his perspective that as leaders we should measure ourselves on the achievements of our team rather than our own work.

Susan reminded us that we are all unique. We all have a voice and should make sure that we let other people know about our opinions, ideas, and values because we will add to the conversation.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we need to look inwards to give ourselves, the confidence to take responsibility, rather than looking to blame, to face in to challenges so that we can affect change, to look and think, ‘How can I best serve my team? How can I best support them?’ And how can I ensure that I'm having conversations with people, rather than just communicating with them?”

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

E061 Conversation Not Communication with Susan Heaton-Wright

In this episode, we take a deep dive into why it is more productive to have conversations rather than communication. As a former opera singer, Susan shares with us her five-step SuperStar Communicator methodology and why it is important to own our space and ensure that as leaders we are listening as well as speaking.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“There are a lot of things that we can do with the voice, to make it interesting, to engage our audience, but also to have that self-awareness that we could have what I call emotional leakages from our voice. We could be saying something very profound but our nerves could distract our audience and put a question mark next to our credibility.”

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

E059 The Importance of Onboarding with Hayley Mintern

In this episode, we take a deep dive into onboarding and why it is so important. Having worked in educational recruitment for the past ten years and recently moved companies, Hayley shares with us her thoughts around what makes a successful onboarding process.  Ensuring that we don’t apply a one size fits all model is key. Other important elements include transparency, trust, and flexibility.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me onboarding isn't the first day, the second day, the third day. It's not even the first week. It's the first six months because it's a journey and you're learning. People do have to hit the ground running, but you need to have check points throughout that period, because things can change quickly, especially in the hybrid world that we work in. It can take six months, even a year for some people to really embed into an organisation and be able to flourish.”

    ABOUT HAYLEY

Hayley has supported the education sector for the last ten years, providing executive search and interim and consultancy solutions to Independent Schools, Academy Trusts, FE Colleges, and Universities. Her speciality is understanding the education sector and connecting talent that is passionate about providing high quality inclusive education. Hayley has built a track record with education leaders and helped many organisations identifying top talent.

Hayley has a passion for education, she is chair of governors for MAT working closely with the head and trust leaders to ensure excellent levels of education. She previously worked closely with England Rugby Schools to deliver inclusive sport in schools and has strong understanding of the curriculum.

Hayley is driven by making a positive difference to the education sector through the quality of leadership appointments.

During this fascinating conversation, Rosie shares with us, the incredible work she is doing with individuals and teams, using nature and horses to help them celebrate their strengths and understand the importance of internal validation.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“All the intelligences are important but currently it's like a three-legged stool, we've got IQ, EQ (emotional intelligence) and SQ (spiritual intelligence). For me it needs to be a four-legged chair, which includes NQ (natural intelligence) and the reason for this is because it's suppressed at the moment.”

Her upcoming book, "Let Nature Be Your Compass," blends natural principles with self-help and leadership strategies. Reflecting on his own experiences of transformation, Gareth shares his top tips to help us navigate the world of change and ensure we achieve our desired outcomes.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

E056 Diving Deep into Episodes 51-55

E056 Diving Deep into Episodes 51-55

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E051 Look After Your Mental Health with Rosie Tressler OBE

E052 Self-Awareness is Key with Nicola Arnold

E053 Being a Mindful Leader with Dr Reiner Kraft

E054 US Higher Education Trends with Lori Capullo

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

    *      Rosie encouraged us to be deliberate about our own mental health and get better at saying no.

    *      Nicola, meanwhile, inspired us to be a positive disruptor and asked the question, “Where are you creating space right now to do new things?”

    *      For Reiner, he wanted us to practice being mindful for one minute, starting small and building up from there.

    *      Lori reminded us of the importance of listening. Listen not to respond but truly hear what is being said.

    *      And finally, John Burns advised not to stay in a job that isn’t right for us.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Self-awareness is the greatest skill we can have as leaders because we turn our attention inwards instead of looking outside for answers. And that isn't always a comfortable process, holding a mirror up to ourselves. We have to get comfortable with who we are with knowing our superpowers, but also those blind spots that can trip us up. When we have self-awareness, we have choice. We can choose how we act and behave.”

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

E055 Managing Redundancy with John Burns

In this episode, we take a deep dive into redundancy, how it feels to be made redundant and what lessons can we take away as leaders, if we ever have to manage a redundancy programme. A former accountant, John shares with us his own experience of redundancy and his insights which are helpful to both employers and employees.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For people who are made redundant, I always say give yourself a couple of months break first. Don't try and dive into doing something straight away because you have to leave your previous employer mentally. They've left you, but you still have to take that break, and mentally work through why you were made redundant, get your energy levels back up again and be more positive about life. Then you can look to your future.”

    ABOUT JOHN

John is a career coach and professional speaker. He works with professional people who have been made redundant. They want to return to employment or start a business of their dreams.

John is the executive producer and host of the GYFT Show. The acronym GYFT means Get Your Future Together. John has published 8 seasons of the GYFT Show on his YouTube channel and is preparing for season 9, for which the theme is monetisation.

For me, the people I remember from college, the leaders that I remember, are the ones who engaged with us. The President is the one who sets that tone and what we're hearing from them is that they really are trying to make sure communications are better and students feel comfortable and welcome and part of the community.”

“For me, as a leader, understanding me is my biggest tool. If I don't have that self-awareness, or that ability to truly understand where my behaviours are being driven from then I don't think that makes me an effective leader. There's likely to be shortcomings in terms of teams that I work with.”

E051 Look After Your Mental Health with Rosie Tressler OBE

E051 Look After Your Mental Health with Rosie Tressler OBE

In this episode, we dive into the topic of mental health and well-being. As Chief Executive of the charity Student Minds, Rosie shares with us why she feels it is important to be both inclusive and relevant as a leader and how she prioritises her own health & well-being. We also explore the importance of having a joined-up approach to mental health and how the charity’s mental health charter is helping universities achieve this.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me, leadership is about being courageous. That means you don't always take the easy option, it means sometimes you do things, or you have to convey things that aren’t popular, or will disappoint some people. And it means you have to be willing to sit with dealing with a lot of risk, but not let that stop you from doing and advocating for the things that you know, right.”

E050 Diving Deep into Episodes 45 - 49 with Mel Loizou

E050 Diving Deep into Episodes 45 - 49 with Mel Loizou

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

E045 Overcoming Roadblocks with Hulya Kurt

E046 Turn Your Passion into Purpose with Julie Perkins

E047 Affordability is Key with Alan Hilton

E048 The Power of Coaching with Julia Bend

E049 Overcoming Limiting Beliefs with Jeremy Lazarus

Reflecting on the final words of wisdom, shared by each of her guests, Mel considers how their insight might help people on their leadership journey:

    *      Hulya reminded us that life is like a dance. Sometimes it's rock and roll. Sometimes it's a foxtrot. Sometimes a slow dance. Sometimes we need to slow down. Sometimes we go two steps ahead, three steps back. That’s normal.

    *      Julie encouraged us as leaders to question ourselves. Who are you as a leader and is there enough space between you and what you are doing.  For Julie this is the golden nugget, as it gives everyone the opportunity to be the best they can be.

    *      For Allan it is all about honesty & integrity and not changing who you are.

    *      Julia, meanwhile, prompted us to remember “it is never too late to be what you might have been.

    *      And Jeremy would agree, he believes that people can be more successful than they think.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Everyone has the power to be completely and utterly brilliant. The journey is not an easy one, you will need to dive deep. But if you are prepared to do the work you can be more than you might have been.”

E046 Turn Your Passion into Purpose with Julie Perkins

E046 Turn Your Passion into Purpose with Julie Perkins

In this episode, we explore how you can turn your passion into purpose. Sharing her journey, we discuss how Julie has taken her experience of working in a large multi-national organisation to help build her own business Wyseminds which supports entrepreneurs on their journey to success. Packed full of helpful insights Julie also explains and why, for her, leadership is a recipe for failure and curiosity.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The biggest lesson of leadership I had was about trust and the space to let go. As a leader you have to ask yourself about blocks. It has to be about who am I as a leader, and have I got enough space between me and what I'm doing? That space is the biggest golden nugget that you'll have. And it gives room for everybody to be the best that they can be.”

     ABOUT JULIE

Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, Julie was always going to cut her commercial teeth at an early age. After studying business and working in the United States, she put her knowledge to the test by joining the family company, Specsavers, and went on to work her way up through the ranks to country director, setting up and establishing the market leader in the Netherlands. After more than 20 years – and building on her extensive experience of industry and her wide-ranging expertise as a leader – Julie founded her own company, Wyseminds, to mentor fellow female entrepreneurs setting out on their own journey, helping them to find purpose and passion in whatever they do. Living and breathing the world of start-ups (and setting them on the road to success), Julie is also an author, public speaker, and podcaster.

E045 Overcoming Roadblocks with Hulya Kurt

E045 Overcoming Roadblocks with Hulya Kurt

In this episode, we explore what it means to overcome roadblocks and create sustainable change. Having worked for many years in a large multinational organisation, Hulya shares with us her journey to become a coach and mentor. We explore how she helps her clients reframe their misbeliefs and why she chooses to use the term feed forward instead of feedback.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Our roadblocks come from our misbeliefs, but we cannot immediately change our mindset. Change means repetition, repetition, repetition. You do something once. You see the outcome and that nothing went wrong so you do it again, seeing it get better and better. This is how change happens. It’s a slow process because we don’t have a magic wand.”

    ABOUT HULYA

After 32 years of working within a multinational company, Hulya chose to follow her passion of becoming a coach, mentor and workshop facilitator. She motivates and empowers company management teams and their employees to move forward in their professional life. Additionally, she specialises in growth management with young adults and teenagers, assisting them through anxieties, fears, and internal roadblocks.
