E044 Lead by Your Values with Sarah Reynolds

E044 Lead by Your Values with Sarah Reynolds

In this episode, we explore what it means to lead by your values. Having started out her career in retail, Sarah shares with us her transition to the student accommodation sector and some of the lessons she has leaned along the way.  As current Chair of ASRA we dive deep into her leadership journey and how she realised that being the best leader she could be, meant being her true authentic self rather than trying to emulate other people.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“When I first started my career, I spent a long time looking up to, other leaders and managers, thinking, ‘oh, I really want to be like you.’ You try and adapt your style to be like that person and then you see somebody else and think, ‘I want to be like that person.’  Suddenly it dawned on me to just be myself. Through being myself, being friendly, and being everything that makes me who I am, I am a better leader.”

    ABOUT SARAH

Sarah Reynolds currently works at Brunel University as the Deputy Head of Student Living. She is also the current ASRA chair.  Sarah has worked within the student accommodation world for the past eight years both in the University & PBSA sectors. She spent the first half of her career in retail, starting her journey as many people do; working part-time whilst juggling studies. It’s from here that her passion for people really developed and she began her management career. Sarah loves working within this sector. The vibrancy of the students that she works with, and the dynamics of her teams makes each day different. She feels lucky to have a job she enjoys so much and a career that has taken her down very different paths.

E042 Be Curious & Courageous with Eleri Thomas

E042 Be Curious & Courageous with Eleri Thomas

In this episode, we explore what it means to be curious and courageous. To not follow a plan and trust the process. Together with Eleri, we dive deep into those pivotal moments in her life when she showed great courage and discover how she realised in her early fifties she didn’t really know herself at all.  Having worked at Aberystwyth University for over twenty-five years, Eleri also reflects on this time with the knowledge she has acquired since re-training as a Creative Kinesiologist.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“For me, in my heart, what leadership means, is the ability to see the potential, of the people that you are working with. To be able to journey with them. To be able to create a vision for the future, and for them to be able to actively create it, to be active participants. And so, the leader provides the environment, they provide the tools for the people around them to be able to be the best people/person, whoever they would like to become.”

    ABOUT ELERI

Eleri grew up in Aberystwyth, a beautiful University town situated on the coast of Cardigan Bay in Wales.  She studied Hospitality Management at the College of Food in Birmingham before starting her working life in a variety of managerial roles in hotels and restaurants in Bath and Bournemouth.

At age 24 she packed her bags and left for a year to travel and work in Australia following a promise to a college friend.  The college friend found love which resulted in a mainly solo trip.
On returning to the UK she changed direction slightly and went to work for Aberystwyth University, where she stayed for the next 25 years.  During that time, she married, had a family, and worked in a variety of different roles from Assistant Accommodation Manager to Deputy Director of Residential and Hospitality Services.

In 2013 she was gifted the opportunity to have some coaching which led in 2015 to a fabulous 4-week trip to Egypt which turned out to be life changing.  Age 50 she took her next big life decision which coincided with her Chiron return and left her job to train as a Creative Kinesiologist which is where we find her now.

E041 Collaboration is Key with Robert Garnish

E041 Collaboration is Key with Robert Garnish

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of change and collaboration. Having moved from the retail sector to higher education, Robert shares his journey since joining the University of Glasgow. We explore what his team want to be famous for, and how they have become more comfortable managing the ‘grey’, understanding that often things aren’t either right or wrong, black, or white, yes or no.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Spending time helping people to understand where they fit in to the overarching plan, to the overarching goals and helping them to understand how best to use and manage those relationships and connections between them, is critical because you'll ultimately get more done as a result.”

    ABOUT ROBERT

Robert joined Higher Education, having spent 17 years working for the John Lewis Partnership. A graduate of the University of St Andrews, his retail experience spans the length and breadth of the UK from in a variety of store and head office roles. Immediately prior to joining the University of Glasgow he was Head of Branch at John Lewis Aberdeen, having previously fulfilled the same role for a new store opening in York in 2014.

Commercial Services was a newly formed function at Glasgow in 2018 and includes Catering & Events, Accommodation, Retail, Sport, Print, and the University Nursery. With a combined annual turnover of some £36m, previously these individual services were all managed separately, so the bringing together provided an ideal platform for growth in revenue and contribution, business development and improvement in customer experience.

Diversifying capability and introducing new opportunities is back underway post-pandemic with several projects including the opening of 5 new catering propositions (delivered through a profit-sharing subsidiary company), work to deliver additional bedspaces and the introduction of a convenience retail offer.

E040 Serenity in Leadership with Martin Laschkolnig

E040 Serenity in Leadership with Martin Laschkolnig

In this episode, we dive deep into serenity and peace. Together with Martin, we explore whether it really is possible to achieve serenity in leadership and the benefits of developing such an approach. Sharing tools and tips that he has learned throughout his life, Martin explains why he believes as leaders there are times when we need to be proactive and other occasions when we need to lean back and chill.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“When you talk with people who are doing great things or have made astonishing discoveries connecting the dots and ask them when this happened, they rarely, if ever, say we got this in a seven-hour meeting. They say, oh yeah, it came to me whilst I was running, in the shower, washing my car or ironing my shirt. All sorts of stuff where you disengage from cognitive activity. This is when the intelligence of the heart and gut can bubble up and connect the dots for you.”

    ABOUT MARTIN

Martin Laschkolnig is the founder and director of the “Institut fur Potentialentwicklung” (Institute for the Development of Potential) in Linz, Austria. E039 The Power of Sound with Charlie Christie

E039 The Power of Sound with Charlie Christie

In this episode, we dive deep into the power of sound and the impact it can have on our mental clarity and focus. Having discovered sound healing whilst living and working in Dubai, Charlie shares the science behind this ancient healing modality and the impact it has had on her life and those people she now works with across the globe.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“I have never been a big fan of the word leadership. I don’t see myself as a leader because I am no different to you. I’m not there to tell people what to do, we’re doing it together. It’s the same as the sound healing work I am doing right now. This is the goal; this is what we are aiming for and what we need to do. Let’s do it together.  There is no separation.”

    ABOUT CHARLIE

Charlie is founder and owner of Thyme with Charlie. A yoga teacher and sound healer she has been running her own internationally certified Sound Healing Academy with Tibetan Singing bowls for several years.

Having been exposed to the holistic healing world since birth she has always been fascinated by what the human eye can’t see. Charlie learnt Reiki at 15 years old and practised on anyone whom she was drawn to help, including the family pets.

Charlie discovered sound healing whilst living in Dubai and immediately connected with it. The practice aided the healing of both physical and emotional ailments and after seeing and feeling the results, she was hooked on this ancient healing modality. Since then, she has developed her healing abilities as an intuitive lightworker and energy healer and now works across the world to help people to find their true self and inner peace.

E038 Lead with Unbounded Empathy with Jo Berry

E038 Lead with Unbounded Empathy with Jo Berry

In this episode we dive deep into the world of conflict and conflict resolution. When she was twenty-seven years old, Jo’s father Sir Anthony Berry was killed by the IRA in the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing. Faced with her grief, Jo chose to give up on revenge and instead find a way to bring peace to the situation.  Sixteen years later Jo met with the man responsible, Pat Magee and since then they have shared a platform speaking together on more than 300 occasions. As Jo shares her story, we explore how replacing our need to control and blame others with unbounded empathy can help us become better leaders.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Leadership is the ability to have empathy with everyone in the organisation, to recognise one's own patterns of wanting to blame and control. I don't think controlling works. Leadership works with people. They're not there with all the answers, that does not create a safe listening, empathic culture. A leader will be able to have boundaries and will be able to challenge people, but in a way, which is about the dignity, without shaming, without making them wrong. And they'll give people space to make mistakes and learn from them.”

    ABOUT JO

Jo Berry is an inspiring speaker who works to resolve conflict around the world. Founder of the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace’, Jo advocates that unbounded empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict. With political, religious, and racial divides deepening as global and local events unfold, her words offer a message of hope and encourage us all to see the humanity in others.

Jo is frequently invited to address international conferences and seminars on themes of reconciliation, conflict resolution and peace. She has given talks and workshops in areas around the world including Lebanon and Rwanda, India, South Korea, Palestine, and Israel as well as throughout the U.K. She has also joined panels and discussions forums on radio and TV.

In recent years Jo has developed workshops in schools and with youth groups on topics of conflict transformation, storytelling, becoming positive changemakers, and challenging violent extremism. She is a TEDx speaker and a Visiting Fellow with the University of Nottingham (Research Primary Area in Rights and Justice).  Jo is also trained as a Restorative Justice facilitator and is an advocate for Restorative Justice around the country.

E035 Managing & Perceiving Emotions with Dr. Kevin Conn

E035 Managing & Perceiving Emotions with Dr. Kevin Conn

In this episode, we dive deep into emotional intelligence, which Kevin defines as the ability to manage and perceive emotions. Having spent nearly fifteen years working with and researching the topic we explore why Kevin believes it is a key leadership skill and how emotional intelligence can improve team performance and engagement.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

‘It’s all about how you treat people.  How are you impacting others with your emotional management? Your reaction to your team, your friends, your colleagues can make their day better, or potentially worse, and it's being able to realise your impact. We are wired to act first and think second, that’s just the way our brain works. Taking a pause, and saying ‘what is my best reaction to this’ makes all the difference.”

    ABOUT KEVIN

Kevin provides leadership and oversight for Student Housing and Residential Life at California State University Northridge. He received his Doctorate in Education from New York University and has experience working in small and large, private and public institutions. Kevin has and continues to serve on local, regional, and national associations within residence life and LGBTQ+ advocacy. He has nearly fifteen years of experience working with and researching the topic of emotional intelligence and related dynamics within both student and professional staff. Kevin has a strong passion for research turned engagement and has partnered with colleagues on international ACUHO-I grant-funded research projects focused on the evolving role of the Resident Assistant. Furthermore, he just published a book entitled Evolving Landscape of Residential Education, which is a collaboration with several global colleagues in the field. In his spare time, he is an avid marathon runner, foodie, and travel enthusiast.

E034 It’s About People Not Numbers with Rachael Lee

E034 It’s About People Not Numbers with Rachael Lee

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of sales, what it means in the world of higher education and why as leaders we need to be comfortable selling. Having worked in hospitality sales for much of her career, Rachel shares with us some of her experiences working as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences and how, through her work with Academic Venue Solutions, she now wants to support colleagues across the UK, who are selling their university’s facilities for conferences and events.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“When you when you're in sales, you have to be inquisitive, you need to get to know what makes people tick, you need to understand, how to work out whether, what you've got is right for them, you've got to come up with the right solution. And it's so much more in depth than what people perceive as selling, as being pushy. For me, it wasn't ever about that it was always about getting to know the person.”

    ABOUT RACHAEL

Rachael started out her sales career in conference centres, moving to hotels and then more latterly the academic sector, with 10 years as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences, part of the University of Warwick. Rachael left Warwick Conferences to start up her own business in November 2017 as RB Associates, a consultancy to help support venues with their sales strategies and now runs Academic Venue Solutions as Membership Director full time. Rachael has volunteered as Chair of the European chapter of IACC for 2 years and has recently become a Mental Health First Aider.

E033 Deep Dive into Episodes 30 - 32 with Mel Loizou

E033 Deep Dive into Episodes 30 - 32 with Mel Loizou

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes:

030 Burn Bright Not Out with Donna Smith

031 The Cost of Generational Diversity with Neerja Singh

032 Communicate with Impact with Patrick Donadio

Three wonderful conversations filled with a plethora of hints and tips which could be helpful to you on your leadership journey. Together Donna and I explored the signs of burn out and what practical steps you can take to ensure you never get taken off your feet in the same way she did.  With Neerja, we dived deep into the cost of generational diversity. A wonderfully brave and honest woman, she shared with us her own deeply personal journey and why she is on a mission to ensure that others don’t experience the same loss. And finally, with Patrick we discussed the first three steps of his IMPACT process, which has been designed to help us better communicate.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we should be providing opportunities and opening doors for our team to walk through, to explore. The other thing is to remember that whilst we can do that, we can create the opportunities we can open doors, we can't change anybody else. We can't make our team walk through that door or take that opportunity or change. Only they can do that.”

E032 Communicate with IMPACT with Patrick Donadio

E032 Communicate with IMPACT with Patrick Donadio

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of communication, exploring how we can communicate with impact. At the start of his career, Patrick worked as a Residential Life Assistant and held numerous university roles before deciding to branch out on his own and specialise in communication. Nowadays he works with leaders and their teams, using his IMPACT process to help people better communicate their ideas and achieve greater results.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“When people communicate a lot of people start with the what, but I think it’s important to start with the why. What are some intentions for communicating? Maybe your intention is to inform, it might be to discover, it might be to persuade, build a relationship or give feedback. Those are all different intentions, and each intention would require a different approach. If I'm here to discover, I would hopefully be asking a lot more questions. If I'm here to inform. I'd be doing more talking.”

    ABOUT PATRICK

Patrick is a communication strategist, speaker, coach, and author of Communicating with IMPACT. Patrick is one of a few people in the world to have earned the highest designations in both the speaking and coaching professions. Patrick delivers custom, high-value, in-person, and virtual presentations to help leaders and their teams communicate clearly, lead effectively, present powerfully, listen attentively, and make a greater IMPACT on their bottom line through his engaging keynotes, practical training programs, and one-on-one coaching.

E031 The Cost of Generational Diversity with Neerja Singh

E031 The Cost of Generational Diversity with Neerja Singh

Trigger warning: this episode includes discussion about suicide

In this episode, Neerja shares with us her passion for generational diversity. Driven by personal loss, she is keen to help parents, leaders and businesses understand how different generations view and interact with the world. Acknowledging that some of her knowledge has come through

hindsight, as well as a large amount of research and the experience of having a daughter who lived with depression, Neerja wants her hard-earned wisdom to support others, enabling them to create environments which will allow the younger generation to thrive and flourish.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Keep reminding yourself that you need to be a mighty generation. And remember it is not so much about knowledge, as it is about communication. Kind, gentle, open communication. Listen more than you talk. Say only 25% of what you want to say, particularly when you are trying to communicate with the next generation.”

    ABOUT NEERJA

A millennial in spirit, with the benefit of hindsight, Neerja Singh calls herself the Seenager or the Senior Teenager. Four generational books, a YouTube channel on gen-next, a professional column on keeping pace with the young, and a signature Generational Quotient Kit, she helps turn generational differences into dividends @work and @home. She has 37 years in media and education, having worked in advertising, public relations, documentary filmmaking, teaching, and feature journalism. Her recent TEDx talk was entitled “The Unaffordable Cost of Generation Gap.” When not busy evangelizing collaboration, ethical cultures, and personal influence models, Neerja plays golf, does inter-city cycling and swims, a kilometre at a time.

E030 Burn Bright Not Out with Donna Smith

E030 Burn Bright Not Out with Donna Smith

In this episode Donna shares with us her journey from solicitor to HR professional and development consultant before starting her own coaching business Odonata in 2017. We explore why she is so passionate about helping her clients burn bright rather than out and learn how, by taking just five minutes a day for ourselves, we can ensure burnout doesn’t take us off our feet completely.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“There's a principle in the Burn Bright programme that I call 'No is a complete sentence'. Unless we put ourselves first, nothing else matters If our health is not in good shape we can't be there for our loved ones, show up for our clients, our colleagues. We can't make the difference we want to make in the world. It starts with us. So, learn to say yes to you.”

    ABOUT DONNA

Donna is on her own journey of discovery.  She is someone who has burnt out, someone who has faced several career crossroads, someone who struggles with perfectionism and that feeling of not being good enough.  Basically, the types of challenges so many of us face every day. Why is this relevant? Because she has faced all these challenges (and still does) and yet she now gets to do what she loves every day. She burns bright (not out) and so can you!

Donna has an extensive range of experience in Coaching, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Leadership & Management Development, MBTI, Talent Development, and workshop facilitation.  Donna is passionate about working with people who have reached that stage where they say, ‘enough is enough’ and they want to make a change for the better, they want to move forwards instead of staying stuck.  She now works with a growing number of clients, helping them to ‘Burn Bright’, not out!

E028 Celebrate Pride Everyday with Carley Owen

As an openly gay woman, working in higher education, Carley shares her journey with us, the highs, and the lows. From ‘coming out’ at nineteen to being told by a colleague that she would have to try harder in London because she was gay, fat, and northern, Carley gives us her perspective on how we can create more inclusive environments, which allow people to bring their true selves to work every day.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The LGBTQ+ community, we want you to ask questions, we want you to ask what that acronym means. I don’t have a clue what most of the acronyms mean because they’re forever changing, because they’re personal and they’re different for every single individual, so you’re probably not always going to get it right. But it’s okay to not get it right. Be open with people and ask them what they prefer to be called.”

Carley is the Student Experience Manager at the University of the Arts London. Originally from the north of England, she has worked within HE and charity sectors for 15 years supporting inclusivity in leadership and her roles.  She is also the Head of Events for Pride in London and has started her own LGBTQ+ events company championing positive individual relationships and community involvement.

E027 Your Values Drive Your Actions with Katrina Walding

E027 Your Values Drive Your Actions with Katrina Walding

Having worked in a variety of operational roles in different sectors, Katrina admits that “customer service is in my blood.” During this fascinating conversation we deep dive into the role values had to play in the change programme she led at the University of Surrey. The aim was not just to create a customer service culture but embed a transformational shift that broke down silos and encouraged a mindset of continual improvement and service innovation.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The reason why values are so important is because they tap into people’s personal beliefs. Our own values define the way we behave. When we tap into our own personal values, and we can find the connection between the organisation values and what's important to us, then that opens a door to transformational change.  If you can really embed values into your organisation, you're on to a winner, you're absolutely on the right journey.”

    ABOUT KATRINA

With over 12 years’ experience of working in the leisure industry, Katrina is an inspirational senior manager who makes things happen. She understands strategy and can take her team with her! In 2016 she moved to higher education, taking the professional lead on all aspects of customer service for Estates and Facilities Management and Commercial Services, heading up an inspiring cultural change programme for the department using the university’s values. Over the last two years Katrina has found her calling in the charity sector where she works for Jigsaw Trust, a charity inspired by autism who provide the very best in ongoing education, vocational and wellbeing services for autistic individuals.

E026 Take Leadership of Your Mind with Caroline Cavanagh

As a clinical hypnotherapist, Caroline has spent the last twelve years helping people understand how their own thoughts and behaviours can create anxiety. With a belief that anxiety is good for us, and it can help us to grow, we dive deep into the process that Caroline uses to help people take leadership of their mind and build their mental resilience.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Anxiety is a more comfortable way for many people to describe fear. We all have anxiety because it is part of that intrinsic survival instinct. But it’s whether you can use that anxiety to allow you to grow or whether it is controlling you and stopping you from growing. It really comes back to that leadership of the fear, as opposed to the fear telling you what you can and can't do.”

Have you ever considered that leadership is a partnership or as a leader you could be fuelling your team’s bad habits or that sometimes all you need to do to help someone’s wellbeing is to be there and listen. These are just some of the topics we discuss in these episodes, which are packed with thought provoking ideas and insights which can help you fulfil your potential as a leader.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“I’ve worked with many managers that feel they have almost a right to power because of the position that they hold. But is that right? Should it be that way? If they changed their perspective, and thought of the relationship more in terms of a partnership, of an equal balancing of bringing together of people's various skills, experiences, and knowledge, would that change the dynamic? And would it be a more positive way to move forward?”
