E024 Be Present & Listen with James Greenwood

E024 Be Present & Listen with James Greenwood

Diving into the world of well-being, James shares with us the importance of listening and recognising that as individuals, the way we each deal with our mental health will be different. Having worked at several universities, we explore James’ approach to leadership and why he believes you should say yes to everything, give it a go and have no regrets.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Sometimes we all get up in the morning, and think I can't be doing with work today, I can't, I'm really stressed. I think it's healthy to have those open discussions with your line manager around how best to structure your work. Sometimes that might mean having a day off here and there and treating wellbeing and mental health a bit more like physical health when we wake up with the flu or a cold. We should be openly discussing wellbeing in a much more positive way. But that's a new skill to learn.”

    ABOUT JAMES

James is Head of Residential Life at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), taking the strategic lead for all aspects of community building and wellbeing support. He has worked within residential life for nearly 10 years at various universities across the UK and has created award-winning student experience programmes.  Currently James is the UK Ambassador for the International Association of College and University Housing Officers. Additionally, James chairs the UK Residential Life and Student Experience groups as part of College and University Business Officers (CUBO) professional body.

E023 Be the Leader of Your Mind with Duncan Bhaskaran Brown

E023 Be the Leader of Your Mind with Duncan Bhaskaran Brown

In this episode we dive deep into the world of bad habits, overindulgence, and addiction. As someone who regularly overindulged, Duncan cleaned up his act, when faced with the questions, ‘Do you want another drink, or do you want a child?” As he shares his story, we explore some of the science behind bad habits and how as managers we could inadvertently be encouraging them in our own team.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“You want to reward the team. What do you do? You buy them donuts. That's not a reward, in my opinion, that's a punishment. You know, that's, that's not like something to celebrate. That's something that actually makes you feel less good and makes you less good at your job. So why would you do that? I don't buy people chocolate or wine in the same way that I wouldn't buy them cigarettes or cocaine.”

    ABOUT DUNCAN

Duncan has done his fair share of overindulgence, strictly speaking he’s drunk more than his fair share of wine and eaten more than his fair share of cake. Along the way he found himself in some interesting places like on stage with S-Club, a stint as Mayor of his hometown and Morris dancing in Westminster Abbey. After 20 years of over-doing it, he cleaned up his act and trained with the Easyway clinic, the world’s most successful stop smoking service. Now he spends his time helping people push over-indulgence out of their life. He lives in Abingdon with one wife, one daughter and two bonsai trees.

014 People Buy From People with Simon Horniblow

015 Regulate Your Nervous System with Paul Crick

016 Let Your Head & Heart Rule with ChaNan Bonser

Three incredible conversations, covering a range of topics including student engagement, why people buy from people, how we can regulate our nervous system and the benefits of coming out of our heads and into our bodies. As leaders, if we want to be the very best version of ourselves, we cannot do what we have always done because we will only get what we have always got. In their own ways, each guest encourages you to take a step outside of what might be comfortable and do something different. The question is are you brave enough to take up the challenge?

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we don't need to have all the answers, but we do need to have the strength of character to be willing to acknowledge when we don't know something. I've met so many people who find this incredibly challenging to do, seeing it as a weakness and not a strength.”

E015 Regulate Your Nervous System with Paul Crick

E015 Regulate Your Nervous System with Paul Crick

In this episode we take a deep dive exploration into our nervous system and how by understanding what happens to us at neurobiological level, we can be better leaders. As a keyboard player with a fear of performing in public, and a reformed management consultant who experienced some pretty stressful and toxic work environments, Paul embarked on a journey of learning and self-discovery that led him to the belief that as leaders we need to work from the inside out.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“I want people to understand that a conversation is a neurobiological chain reaction. Think about meetings. It's a series of neurobiological chain reactions. And until we see the world through this lens, people are going to continue doing what they're doing, not knowing the impact of this on our neurophysiology or our neuro chemistry. How the hell are you going to manage teams, if you don't recognise, we're co creating our experience, and that this neurobiological chain reaction is happening.”

E012 Dive Deep Into Episodes 9 - 11 with Mel Loizou

In this episode, Mel dives deep into these recent podcast episodes

009 Expand Your Influence with Jo Hardman

010 Attitude Determine Altitude with Rebecca O’Hare

011 Capacity for Change with Charlie Warshawski

Three wonderful conversations, with two people who are working within the higher education sector in the UK and one who has worked closely with Dr Carol Dweck, who led the pioneering research into mindset theory. Diving deep, each guest provided valuable insight into how they have achieved their goals and battled imposter syndrome to get where they want to be.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“We know that everyone is not like us, but we don’t live it. Why? For me, the answer is simple. For us to live this statement, we must first understand who we are, we need to be able to recognise our superpowers, but also our blind spots. How can we hope to understand others when we can't understand ourselves? And to do this takes time, it takes guts, and it takes determination.”

E011 Capacity for Change with Charlie Warshawski

E011 Capacity for Change with Charlie Warshawski

In this episode we dive deep into how our mindset can impact our capacity for change. Chatting with the wonderful Charlie Warshawski, who has worked closely with Carol Dweck, we explore her pioneering research into mindsets and how shifting our belief from, ‘I can’t do something.’ to ‘I haven’t yet learned the process,’ can help us grow.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“The mantra these days is praising effort, or praising process, rather than praise a person. The problem is that praise often undermines people's self-esteem. Often it sends a message to say we are praising and evaluating you. We are saying, we think you're brilliant, we own the view about whether this picture is good, this drawing is good, this piece of work is good, whether your intrinsic personality is good. Whereas if we step back from that a bit, and we start using descriptive praise, we can describe what we see. And if we're going to praise anything, we praise effort. We praise process.”

Three conversations about three very different topics.  Interestingly, whilst on the surface these subjects are distinct, as we dived deep into each episode, and my guests shared their wonderful insights some common themes began to emerge. These included the pitfalls of throwing money at a challenge without being super clear about where you are going from a strategic perspective.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“Behavioural change is the fundamental piece that is often missing when we articulate where it is we want to go. We fail to spend time thinking about what will be different when we achieve our goal. What will we see, hear, and feel? How will our experience have changed? How will the experience of our team, colleagues, students have changed?”

001 Why Dive Deep with Mel Loizou

    KEY TAKEAWAY

“As leaders, we cannot hope to lead others until we can first lead ourselves and that means diving deep into who we are. As human beings we are all beautifully imperfect – there is not a single person on this planet who is perfect no matter what they may tell themselves and that’s ok. We need to all get more comfortable at looking in the mirror (metaphorically that is), celebrating our superpowers and recognising our blind spots. We need to get comfortable with diving deep.”
