    enOctober 03, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • The Impact of Early Childhood ExperiencesOur upbringing influences our identity and values, with early experiences shaping our work ethic, self-reliance, and confidence, but also potentially limiting social connections and relationships.

Our early childhood experiences play a significant role in shaping our identity and values. Black Coffee's upbringing with a young mother, divorced parents, and a hardworking grandmother taught him the importance of hard work and being assertive. He learned to be self-reliant and independent, which led to him being confident in his own thoughts and decisions. However, this also resulted in him becoming more of a loner and having a small circle of friends. The cost of his childhood experiences was the lack of social connections and the tendency to remove himself from relationships at the slightest unease. Overall, the conversation highlights the impact of early context on our personal development and the trade-offs that come with it.

    • Black Coffee: Using Music to Connect EmotionallyBlack Coffee's journey highlights the importance of emotional expression and the healing power of music in creating happiness and connection.

Expressing emotions can be challenging, especially for black men who may face stereotypes that suggest they are not good at it. Black Coffee shares that he did not learn how to express his emotions when he was young, as he had a tough grandmother and received discipline instead of understanding. However, he recognizes the importance of emotional expression and strives to create a comfortable space for others to open up. He believes in the healing power of music, which served as his escape and brought him peace and happiness. Black Coffee shares his music to heal others in the same way it healed him, proving that music can create happiness and connect people emotionally.

    • Black Coffee's Journey: From Childhood Music Lover to Acclaimed DJ.Embrace your passions, explore diverse influences, and nurture your unique style to connect with others and achieve success.

Music has been an integral part of Black Coffee's life since childhood. He grew up in a big family where they would all gather outside, dance, and enjoy different genres of music. His curiosity and passion for music led him to become a DJ at a young age, and he developed a unique style of playing that gained him recognition. Despite also pursuing other interests such as chess and classical theater, Black Coffee's love for music never wavered. Through his exposure to various genres and his understanding of different musical tastes, he was able to connect with diverse audiences and even perform with a 24-piece orchestra. This conversation highlights the importance of nurturing one's passion and embracing the diverse influences that shape us.

    • Overcoming adversity with resilience and determination.Never give up hope, find strength within yourself, and persevere through challenging circumstances. Obstacles can be overcome with patience and a positive mindset.

Resilience and determination can overcome even the most challenging circumstances. Black Coffee recounts a traumatic event where a car plowed through a crowd celebrating Nelson Mandela's release from prison. Despite suffering a severe shoulder injury that damaged his nerves, he faced limited medical resources and uncertainty about his recovery. However, Black Coffee refused to let his injury define him. Despite feeling isolated and facing ridicule from others, he gradually accepted his situation and embraced the fact that his nerves would heal over time. This experience taught him the importance of not giving up hope and finding strength within oneself to persevere. It serves as a powerful reminder that obstacles can be overcome with patience and a positive mindset.

    • Overcoming Physical Limitations with Resilience and DeterminationResilience and determination can help overcome physical barriers. With a positive mindset and perseverance, one can achieve their goals and find creative solutions to challenges.

Resilience and determination can overcome physical limitations. Black Coffee faced the challenge of a paralyzed arm but chose to focus on moving forward and not letting self-pity hinder his progress. He dedicated himself to learning everyday tasks independently and embraced acceptance of his condition. Instead of seeking pity or sympathy, he wanted to be understood and heard like everyone else. Black Coffee's passion for music fueled his determination to become a professional DJ, despite the physical obstacles he faced. He worked harder and found creative solutions to overcome challenges, such as finding alternative ways to handle vinyl records. This story highlights the power of perseverance and a positive mindset in achieving one's goals.

    • The Power of Perseverance and Self-Belief: Black Coffee's Journey to SuccessDespite lacking formal education, Black Coffee's success is driven by his passion, self-belief, and hard work. He encourages others to be true to themselves, develop their unique style, and persevere to achieve their dreams.

Black Coffee's success stems from a combination of passion, self-belief, and hard work. He emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and developing a unique style based on self-understanding. Despite not having formal education in public speaking or presentation, Black Coffee recognizes the value of these skills in his children's education. He shares his initial fears and doubts about his future in the music industry but ultimately takes ownership of his dreams and works towards them. Black Coffee's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the ability to rise above humble beginnings. He views his achievements as a reflection of his capabilities rather than being solely driven by awards or accolades. Ultimately, it is the drive to prove himself and push beyond limitations that motivates Black Coffee to keep striving for more.

    • Prioritizing authenticity and quality over commercial success.Stay true to your sound, collaborate with artists you admire, and don't succumb to pressures from record labels or authority figures to compromise your artistic integrity.

Black Coffee prioritizes quality and staying true to himself as an artist. He believes in being intentional about what he wants and not chasing after mainstream success. For him, being a DJ is where his core business lies and releasing music is secondary. He emphasizes the importance of not succumbing to pressures from record labels and authority figures who try to dictate his sound for commercial success. By maintaining control over his music and separating his African releases from global ones, he can stay true to his sound and collaborate with artists he admires without compromising his artistic integrity. Overall, Black Coffee's key takeaway is to prioritize authenticity and quality over chasing trends and commercial success.

    • Black Coffee's Demanding DJ Career and Lessons on Success and Self-CareBlack Coffee emphasizes the dedication and hard work required for success, but also highlights the importance of self-care and respecting others in the journey.

Black Coffee leads a highly demanding and successful career as a DJ, performing numerous shows throughout the year. He mentions that he did 21 shows in Ibiza alone during one summer. When asked about the total number of shows in a year, Black Coffee confirms that it can exceed 150. He emphasizes the dedication and hard work required to reach such a level of success, comparing it to the hours spent by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. However, he also highlights the importance of stepping out of survival mode and taking care of oneself, mentioning therapy as a helpful tool for artists. Throughout his journey, he has learned to balance his success while still respecting others. Despite enjoying benefits and privileges, he remains grounded and acknowledges the support he receives.

    • Building a Legacy and Creating ValueBlack Coffee's journey to finding balance and happiness while creating a lasting legacy for his children and future generations.

Black Coffee is intent on building a legacy through his house and creating value in every aspect of it. He envisions the Black Coffee house as a future symbol of his success and accomplishments, filled with art, memorabilia, and cherished moments. He wants his children to have a normal life next door, away from the excesses of fame, but also wants to create a space where famous friends can visit and leave their mark. Black Coffee's journey from divorce to apartment to living with his mother reflects his ongoing struggle to find balance and happiness, while also navigating societal expectations. Ultimately, his goal is to create a lasting legacy for his children and future generations.

    • Finding happiness through love and laughter.Expressing love and affection to our parents is crucial for breaking the cycle and teaching future generations to freely express their emotions. Laughter is the favorite sound and a symbol of happiness.

Happiness is not a destination, but rather a series of different experiences where boxes are ticked. Life is a continuous journey of discovery, and there will always be new things to learn and different meanings to be found. The speaker emphasizes the importance of expressing love and affection to our parents, even if it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar. It is a way of breaking the cycle and teaching future generations to freely express their emotions. The favorite sound mentioned by the speaker is laughter, as it is a symbol of happiness. Ultimately, as humans, we are all searching for happiness in our lives.

E115: The “Winning Expert”: How To Become The Best You Can Be: Sir David Brailsford
Sir David Brailsford is the former Performance Director of British Cycling and current Team Principal of the Ineos Grenadiers, a professional cycling team that, along with its direct predecessor Team Sky, have won seven Tour De France titles since 2012. David is behind the business and life philosophy of ‘marginal gains’, a belief that paying attention to every little detail, and then trying to improve it by 1%, will have massive compound benefits when added together. Before David arrived at British Cycling, Britain was a relative backwater in the cycling world. Within a few years, he oversaw a team that won 8 out of 10 track medals at the olympic games. In this interview David opens up about the good times, and also the criticism he’s received, like never before. Topics: Your early years Getting into cycling Helping people find their motivation C.O.R.E First principles Forgetting about the result How to build motivation after victory? How to make tough decisions Marginal gains The cost of your obsession Your cancer scare Undergoing Heart surgery Individual approach vs team approach Struggling with failure The last guests question David's Team: https://twitter.com/INEOSGrenadiers https://www.instagram.com/ineosgrenadiers/ Watch the episodes on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheDiaryOfACEO/videos Our episode with Steve Peters: https://g2ul0.app.link/jus5h9GsOmb Sponsors: Huel - https://uk.huel.com/ Myenergi - https://bit.ly/3oeWGnl Learn more about your ad choices.
