    Podcast Summary

    • Local Elections: A Grim Night for ConservativesThe Conservatives suffered significant losses in the local elections, with Labour making large gains and other parties performing well. The Tories have lost over half their seats, but managed to hold some councils and the Tees Valley mayoralty. Rishi Sunak is working to minimize damage before the general election. The Greens had a surprising showing.

      The local elections in the UK on Thursday, while not apocalyptic for the Conservative Party as some outlets suggest, were a grim night for them. The Tories are facing significant losses, with Labour making large gains and other parties like Reform and the Greens also performing well. The most notable result was in Blackpool South, where Labour regained the seat with a huge swing, coming close to pushing the Conservatives into third place. The Conservatives have lost over half their seats so far, but they have managed to hold on to some councils and the Tees Valley mayoralty. The police commissioner elections have seen mixed results for the Conservatives, with two out of three declared lost and one held. Overall, the elections have shown that the Conservative Party is facing a significant challenge, and Rishi Sunak is working to minimize the damage before the general election. The Greens have also had a surprising showing in these elections.

    • Green Party's Surge in Muslim Areas due to Gaza AngerThe Green Party's votes have increased in areas with high Muslim populations due to Labour's Gaza policy, which could impact the general election. Keir Starmer aims to maintain excitement for the election, and results from all regions, including the West Midlands, will be revealed soon.

      The Green Party has seen a significant surge in votes, particularly in areas with high Muslim populations, due to anger over Labour's policy on Gaza. This trend could continue in a general election, but the Greens need to be cautious as not all voters are fully supportive of their agenda. Keir Starmer wants to maintain a sense of uncertainty and excitement for the general election to encourage voter turnout. The results from all regions, including the West Midlands, will be known tomorrow, and it appears that the Gaza issue may have affected Labour's chances in this area as well. Susan Hall's mayoral campaign in London is expected to result in a Labour win. Despite some speculation, it is unlikely that the Conservatives will make significant upsets in the mayoral races.

    • Local elections: Close races and controversy over voter IDDespite the Conservative Party's poor performance, uncertainty remains due to postal votes. Rishi Sunak's leadership is not in question, but Labour is focusing on their wins and mayoral contests. Voter ID caused controversy, but did not significantly impact the results.

      The Conservative Party's poor performance in the local elections, particularly in London, was not entirely unexpected due to the quality of their candidate in one key constituency. However, the close results and potential for postal votes to sway the outcome have kept some uncertainty in the air. Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister, is not seen as a sitting duck for leadership challenges despite some speculation. The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, is focusing on their wins in areas like Blackpool South and is cautiously watching the mayoral contests. The issue of voter ID caused some controversy, with Boris Johnson making a public show of obtaining ID to address concerns. Overall, the elections have highlighted the challenges facing both major parties and the potential for closer races in the future.

    • Controversy over Voter ID law in local electionsDespite the Voter ID law's intended purpose, reports of disenfranchised voters due to ID issues raised concerns. Boris Johnson's past experience and careless attitude towards voting added to the debate on entitlement and democratic processes. The future of the Conservative Party remains uncertain with ongoing speculation and infighting.

      The implementation of the Voter ID law in the recent local elections sparked controversy, with reports of people being denied the right to vote due to ID issues. While the head of the electoral commission reported few problems, the potential number of disenfranchised voters is unclear due to low turnout. Boris Johnson's experience of being denied the vote due to not having his ID served as a reminder that despite the law's intended purpose, polling station staff upheld the rules fairly. Johnson's careless attitude towards voting and the passing of laws that may negatively impact others raises questions about entitlement and apathy towards democratic processes. The future of the Conservative Party, specifically Rishi Sunak's involvement, remains uncertain, with ongoing speculation about a potential election call and party infighting. Overall, the local elections highlighted the importance of upholding democratic processes and the potential consequences of apathy and entitlement.

    • Reform Party's Disappointing Election ResultsThe Reform Party's poor showing in recent elections raises concerns for their ability to challenge divisive Conservative policies, particularly on immigration.

      The Reform Party's performance in the recent elections did not meet expectations, with only 16.9% of the votes in Blackpool South. This low result raises concerns for the party, as Nigel Farage, a potential Reform candidate, may struggle to secure a seat in parliament due to the lack of guaranteed wins. The party's poor performance may not deter the Conservatives from continuing to pursue divisive policies, such as their stance on immigration. The migrant issue remains a significant point of contention, with record crossings and the Irish border becoming a major concern. Despite some hope that the Reform Party may not be as ineffective as perceived, it is unlikely that their poor showing will persuade the Conservatives to abandon their extreme positions. Election '24: Electric Landslide

    Election '24: Electric Landslide
    According to Grant Shapps, Labour is in danger of winning a “supermajority” - which means literally nothing in British politics. We prefer ‘mega-landslide’, but realistically what would a win as big as is projected mean for British politics? Plus, no one is talking about Brexit in this election cycle, even Nigel Farage – WHY?! Two of Westminster's best-connected journalists, Sky News's Sam Coates and Politico's Jack Blanchard, guide you through their top predictions for the next seven days in British politics.

    The local and mayoral elections are trundling towards us, with Westminster set for the fallout. But don't expect Rishi Sunak to name the date of the general election anytime soon, despite rumours that some MPs are on manoeuvres - hear why on this episode.

    Plus, how will Labour use their predicted successes? And where will the other parties fall?

    To find a full list of mayoral candidates in each election, you can use the postcode search here.

    Heading north, Holyrood is also poised for an explosive week, with no confidence votes being put down against First Minister Humza Yousaf, and the Scottish government itself.

    Jack and Sam look how those votes could play out this week, and why former SNP leadership hopeful turned Alba MSP Ash Regan holds all the power.

    They also discuss deputy foreign secretary Andrew Mitchell's big week, and why Monday could throw up a major hot button issue in the House of Commons.

    Are the Tories heading for extinction?

    Two massive by-election losses in Tory heartland. Are Rishi Sunak's hopes of holding onto his premiership next year in tatters?

    They may still win Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire back in next year's general election, but that doesn't arrest the growing expectation that there is a distinct possibility the Conservatives could soon face electoral annihilation.

    We speak to Lara Spirit, editor of The Times' Red Box, to understand the political implications for the Tories and Sunak in the wake of last night's results.

    And - a voice from each party.

    Tory MP Robin Walker, who, despite campaigning in Mid Beds is still confident his party can recover (though one might say there's a slight falter in his voice);

    Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper tries to dampen her party's disappointment;

    and Labour shadow secretary Peter Kyle, who led the Labour campaign in Mid Beds has a thing or two (or three) to say about the Lib Dem's campaign - which he calls 'filth'.
