As the use of generative AI becomes more prevalent, it's crucial to focus on improving its design to make it more accessible to a wider audience. Keep an eye on these developments in the world of AI and join the conversation to learn more about how design plays a role in making generative AI more accessible.

    • Good design, accessibility, and AI's role in creating user-friendly productsDesigners must prioritize good UI, UX, and accessibility when introducing new generative AI tools to ensure a positive user experience. AI can help address accessibility issues more effectively and create products for a wider audience.

Good UI, UX, and accessible design are crucial when introducing new generative AI tools to ensure a positive user experience. Yadi Arroyo, a VUE (Voice User Interface) Designer at Truist, emphasized this point during our conversation. VUE Designers focus on creating interfaces for multiple modes of interaction, including voice. Yadi's experience ranges from conversational design for chatbots in banking to creating generative AI tools in various industries. Design is becoming increasingly accessible to people of all backgrounds and skill sets, and this trend may be linked to the advancements in generative AI. Yadi, who got into design by accident, highlighted the importance of accessibility in design, especially in banking where regulations and data protection are strict. Accessibility features, such as voice command, enable people with disabilities to use banking services. With the help of AI, designers can now address accessibility issues more effectively and create products that cater to a wider audience. For instance, AI can help doctors like Harvey Castro analyze medical data and identify patterns to improve patient care. Overall, the conversation with Yadi underscored the importance of good design, accessibility, and the potential of generative AI to create user-friendly products for everyone.

    • AI's impact on industries and accessibilityStay curious about AI, embrace opportunities, and focus on enhancing human capabilities with AI.

AI technology is transforming various industries, making human tasks more efficient, and improving accessibility for people with different abilities. The speaker, who is a product designer, emphasizes the importance of staying curious and learning about AI to stay relevant in the field. He also highlights the significance of abstract thinking and the ability to work with people as essential skills for those interested in AI. Furthermore, AI is breaking down language and accessibility barriers, making education and curiosity more accessible to everyone. The speaker encourages listeners to embrace the opportunities brought by AI and not be afraid of its potential impact on humanity. Instead, we should focus on using it to enhance human capabilities and make our lives better.

    • Collaboration and User Experience in Product DesignEffective product design requires collaboration, a focus on user experience, and advocacy for the user. The future of AI in design may be multimodal, enhancing accessibility for all users.

Creating effective products, whether UI design or AI, requires collaboration between different individuals and a strong focus on the user experience. Listening to and advocating for the user is crucial to remember the purpose of the design. The future of AI systems is likely to be multimodal, allowing for various forms of input and output, enhancing accessibility for individuals with different abilities. Designers should consider accessibility from the outset, starting with the outliers, to ensure everyone can use the product. Tools like Figma's Magician plugin, which uses generative AI on the back end, demonstrate the potential of this technology to enhance design processes.

    • An AI-enhanced Internet for all usersThe future of AI integration brings multi-modal interfaces, making information accessible anywhere, but it's crucial to safeguard personal information and respect user privacy.

The future of AI integration into our daily lives will bring about multi-modal interfaces that are accessible and equitable for all users, regardless of their physical abilities or technological resources. This vision of an AI-enhanced Internet, or Internet of Things, has the potential to make information accessible anywhere with an internet connection. However, it's crucial to remember the importance of safeguarding personal information and respecting user privacy as AI becomes more deeply ingrained in our lives. The ease of use and accessibility of AI should not come at the cost of our privacy. As we move towards a more AI-driven future, it's essential to strike a balance between convenience and security.

    • Transparency and user control in AI data collection and usage are crucial.Users want companies to know them through actions and purchases, not tracking. Future AI may include multimodal interfaces for greater accessibility, and proper priming, prompting, and polishing techniques are essential for effective AI use.

While data is a crucial aspect of AI technology, including generative models like ChatGPT, transparency and user control in data collection and usage are essential. Users prefer companies to know them through their actions and purchases rather than tracking them across various websites. The current text-based interfaces for AI chat applications may not be the end all, and future developments could include multimodal interfaces such as facial recognition, Morse code, or sign language for greater accessibility. The future of AI may lie in multimodal interactions, although it may take time for these innovations to come to fruition. Additionally, proper priming, prompting, and polishing techniques are vital for effectively using AI models like ChatGPT.

    • Exploring the Future of Generative AI and its Impact on Product DesignThe future of generative AI is promising, with potential for increased competition in the chip industry leading to more accessible technology. Practical experience and simplification of complex tools are key for bringing advanced AI to a wider audience.

The future of generative AI is exciting, and the back end developments are particularly intriguing. The speaker expressed excitement about the potential for increased competition in the chip industry, which could lead to more accessible and democratized AI technology. As a designer, they are more enthusiastic about the back end because it allows them to bring advanced technology to a wider audience. They emphasized the importance of practical experience and encouraged those interested in product design to start exploring AI, even if they don't have a specialized background. The speaker's role involves both designing and negotiating, and they believe that simplifying complex AI tools will make them more accessible to a broader audience, enabling anyone to potentially harness the power of AI.

    • Design process limitationsEmbrace limitations to create better products and solutions. Collaborate with team, work within regulations, and improve user experience of powerful tools.

Limitations, whether personal or professional, are a natural part of the design process. As a designer, you are limited by the collective capabilities of your team, the regulations that govern your work, and the user experience of the tools you use. These limitations can seem restrictive, but they can also provide opportunities for growth and innovation. Personally, I've learned that my limitations are often the result of the people I work with. While it can be challenging to create together, the best versions of a project are often the result of collaboration. However, I am also limited by the iterative process of design. If we launch a subpar product without plans for improvement, that's a significant limitation. Regulations can also present limitations, as some rules can hinder the user experience rather than enhance it. In these cases, it's essential to find ways to work within the regulations while still providing value to the user. When it comes to large language models, the most powerful tools often have the worst user interfaces or user experiences. As a result, they require a high level of prompt engineering expertise, making them inaccessible to many users. To make these tools more effective, we need to make them more user-friendly and accessible to a wider audience. In summary, limitations are a natural part of the design process. By embracing these limitations and finding ways to work within them, we can create better products and solutions.

    • Caring about accessibility and better experiences in Gen AIEmphasize ease and accessibility for all, acknowledge the value of multi-interfaces, and prioritize people and self-care in creating Gen AI technologies.

Accessibility and creating better experiences in Gen AI is all about care. Whether you're a UI/UX designer or just starting to understand the complex systems behind these technologies, caring about people and yourself is crucial. The speaker, who has ADHD and is always in a hurry, emphasizes the importance of making things easier and more accessible for everyone, including himself. He also acknowledges the value of multi-interfaces and giving people different ways to input information. Furthermore, he gives credit to smaller companies for compensating for the lack of focus on UI and UX in larger tools by creating beautiful and functional interfaces. Ultimately, the speaker encourages everyone to care about the people who will use these technologies and to care about themselves, as creating these products can be a rewarding and personal experience.

    • Democratizing Access to Education with AI in UI/UX DesignAI can create more inclusive and accessible experiences for all by democratizing access to education through UI/UX design, putting humans first, and considering the greater good.

AI has the potential to create a more equitable world by democratizing access to various aspects of life, including education. This was highlighted by Yadi Ramadani's personal experience of creating accessible UI/UX designs for her son with special needs. Initially driven by a selfish desire, she shifted her perspective to consider the greater good and the importance of putting humans first. AI can level the playing field in numerous ways, and it's crucial for designers and developers to keep this in mind. The future of AI in UI/UX design holds immense potential for creating more inclusive and accessible experiences for all. So, let's care for humans and figure out the rest, as Yadi beautifully put it. SPI 515: This Is Not Being Talked About! How to Create Accessible Content

#515 One of my favorite things that happens as a result of this podcast is when a listener or fan says, "You know what, Pat? I noticed that you haven't really talked about [topic] much, but it's so, so important. Is there anything you can do about it?" We get a lot of feedback like that, and we appreciate it. We're always trying to improve, and how would we know how to improve if it weren't for the people in our community who speak up? Today, I wanted to highlight one of those community members. His name is Dustin Bakkie. Dustin started his online journey focused on effective teaching and course design. He's helped a lot of teachers, especially through his YouTube channel (DustinBakkie1). He has a lot of really popular videos that have helped teachers, especially during COVID with how to effectively use Zoom, and how to create really good curriculums online, something that obviously bleeds over into entrepreneurship. But Dustin recently had an epiphany that he could serve his audience even better by helping creators like us create accessible online content. What does that mean? It refers to the ability of all people, regardless of ability or disability, to access what we create. Dustin is really focused on helping foster and normalize inclusive digital communities. I love that, and I'm so glad he's here today to talk about what that means and how you can start to implement it in your own business. I think a lot of us creators know how important accessibility should be, but we're worried that it's really complicated. Well, Dustin is here to break things down and show us that it's not as complicated as we might think. So sit back and listen in, because we're going to be learning something very important today that you may not have heard anywhere else. Show notes and more at SmartPassiveIncome.com/session515.

Accessible to who? Exploring built environment equity with Re-Fabricate and the DisOrdinary Architecture Project

In this episode of Building Sounds, we speak with some of the individuals who are actively working towards transforming this vision into a reality - Jos Boys, Poppy Levison (DisOrdinary Architecture Project), and Roseanne Scott (Re-Fabricate). We explore the legacy of Seats at the Table, one of the key built projects from LFA2023 consisting of a series of accessible seating and public realm interventions in the City of London by Re-Fabricate and the DisOrdinary Architecture Project, as well as the brilliant work that has followed the project.
