    Podcast Summary

    • Transforming into a productive personRecognize the importance of wanting what's good for ourselves and learn skills to enhance motivation and productivity.

Developing a consistent work ethic and staying motivated involves recognizing the importance of wanting what's good for ourselves, even if it's not something we naturally desire. Dr. Rick Hanson, a guest on the Being Well podcast, shared his personal experience of transforming from a less diligent person to someone who has maintained a high level of productivity for decades. He realized that much of life is about helping ourselves learn to want the things that are beneficial for us. To do this, he became interested in understanding how to motivate oneself consistently and enjoyably, leading him to study various methods and observe those who naturally exhibit high levels of productivity. While there may be natural variations in temperament, such as differences in dopamine receptors, we can all learn and practice skills to enhance our motivation and productivity.

    • Celebrating small accomplishments boosts productivityRecognizing and celebrating small accomplishments throughout the day can lead to significant productivity gains over time.

Recognizing and celebrating small accomplishments throughout the day can be a powerful motivator and help keep us focused on our goals. This practice, which the speaker refers to as "filing away yeses," can seem insignificant but can add up to significant productivity gains over time. The speaker came to this realization during young adulthood when they recognized the importance of utilizing their abilities and talents to their fullest potential. By focusing on incremental improvements and treating each small accomplishment as a victory, the speaker was able to increase their productivity and make a meaningful impact on their life. This simple practice can be a game-changer for those looking to maximize their potential and make the most of their time.

    • Find enjoyment in everyday tasksDiscovering joy in routine activities can lead to increased productivity and overall well-being

To increase productivity and sustain energy throughout the day, it's essential to find enjoyment in everyday tasks. This doesn't mean adding extra hours to an already long workday, but rather learning to appreciate the small moments and finding beauty in seemingly mundane activities. By doing so, we can shift our mindset and approach tasks with motivation from the inside out, rather than pushing ourselves to get through them. This skill, known as a "super skill," can lead to increased productivity and overall well-being. Whether it's shopping, brushing your teeth, or digging a ditch, the ability to find enjoyment in almost anything can make all the difference in our daily lives. It's important to remember that what brings enjoyment and fulfillment is unique to each individual, and it's up to us to discover and embrace those things. So next time you're faced with a task that seems unappealing, try approaching it with a new perspective and see if you can find the beauty and enjoyment hidden within.

    • Finding enjoyment and reducing frictionAccepting and surrendering to the moment can reduce stress and find peace, while curiosity and delight can help find enjoyment in unexpected situations. Analyzing too much can lead to paralysis, sometimes it's better to just take action.

Finding enjoyment and reducing friction are key to navigating life's challenges. Curiosity and delight can help us find novelty and entertainment in unexpected situations, while accepting and surrendering to the demands of the moment can help reduce stress and friction. This doesn't mean succumbing or appeasing, but rather truly surrendering and finding peace in the present. Additionally, analyzing situations too much can lead to paralysis, and sometimes it's better to just take a breath and jump in to get things done. An example of this can be seen in the story of a monk in an airport who found peace and acceptance in a delayed flight, and in Tom's quick and efficient approach to fixing a fence. These lessons can help us approach life's challenges with a more open and accepting mindset, allowing us to find joy and growth in even the most difficult situations.

    • Discipline vs Motivation: Sustained Effort vs SparkDiscipline leads to greater success by enabling consistent effort towards goals, even when motivation fades. Focus on inner strength and determination for sustained progress.

Motivation alone may not be enough to help us achieve our goals. While motivation can provide a spark to initiate action, it often fades over time. Instead, cultivating discipline, or a sustained and focused effort towards a goal, can lead to greater success. This is because discipline allows us to consistently take small steps towards our objectives, even when motivation wanes. Moreover, the speaker draws an analogy between motivation and the cat's rage response, and discipline and the cat's predatory pursuit. While motivation can push us to take action in the moment, discipline enables us to persist in our efforts over the long term. Therefore, to grow this discipline within ourselves, we might consider reframing our approach to goal-setting. Rather than relying solely on external motivators, we can focus on developing the inner strength and determination required to sustain our efforts. This might involve setting clear, achievable goals, breaking them down into smaller tasks, and consistently working towards them, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Ultimately, by prioritizing discipline over motivation, we can increase our chances of achieving our goals and experiencing the ecstatic breakthroughs that come with growth and progress.

    • From motivation to discipline: Swimming upstream vs being carried alongShift from motivation to discipline by fully committing to a goal and allowing it to become a deep desire, which brings a sense of magic and makes the goal feel more meaningful.

Motivation and discipline are two different approaches to achieving goals. Motivation is the drive to swim upstream towards a good purpose, often requiring constant effort to overcome resistance. Discipline, on the other hand, is being carried along by a strong commitment and passion for a purpose, like being swept along by a river. This commitment brings a sense of magic and makes the goal feel more meaningful. A key element in this process is fully committing to the goal and allowing it to become a deep desire. This shift from motivation to discipline can be seen as a move from resistance to surrender. For example, during a difficult time in his life when he was struggling to write his first book, the speaker found inspiration in a trip to Joshua Tree National Monument. The desire to complete the book became a deep commitment, allowing him to let go of resistance and be carried forward by the purpose.

    • Realizing the importance of self-motivation and prioritiesSelf-motivation and understanding priorities are essential for personal growth and achievement. It's up to each of us to take ownership of our goals and put in the necessary effort to make them a reality.

Personal growth and achievement require self-motivation and a clear understanding of priorities. The speaker shared a personal experience of wanting others to solve her problems while working on a book, but realizing that no one would do it for her. She had to take responsibility and find the motivation within herself to push through the frustration and fear of failure. This moment of realization was described as a "sacred moment" where she understood that she was the only one who could make it happen. This concept applies to various aspects of life, including career goals, relationships, and personal projects. The speaker suggested drawing on the feeling of determination in simpler situations, such as completing a workout or coming through for someone important to us, to help us want and focus on our goals. She also mentioned the importance of setting priorities and letting go of distractions that hinder progress. Ultimately, the message is that personal growth and achievement come from within, and it's up to each of us to take ownership of our goals and put in the necessary effort to make them a reality.

    • Effective time management and a clear sense of purpose keep motivation highRecognize time limits, allocate wisely, desire outcome, find pleasure in challenges, and balance passion and relaxation to maintain motivation

Effective time management and a clear sense of purpose are key to maintaining motivation. By recognizing the limited hours in a day and allocating them wisely, individuals can build a consistent schedule that carries them towards their goals. Additionally, allowing oneself to truly desire the outcome and maintain a relaxed, focused pursuit can lead to increased motivation and commitment. As discussed, finding pleasure in challenging circumstances and recognizing small rewards along the way can also help sustain motivation over time. Ultimately, it's important to find a balance between passion and relaxation, allowing oneself to fully engage in the journey towards achieving one's goals.

    • Reflecting on temporary vs sustainable motivationConsider the benefits of temporary and sustainable motivation in your personal and professional life. Reflect, rate, and subscribe for more insights.

Motivation comes in different forms: temporary and sustainable. Temporary motivation can be likened to reading a fortune cookie and feeling excited about an upcoming task. However, sustainable motivation is the discipline and dogged pursuit of your goals over an extended period. We encourage you to reflect on which type of motivation serves you best in your personal and professional life. Additionally, we would appreciate it if you could rate and subscribe to our podcast to stay updated on our upcoming episodes. In our next episode, we will begin discussing the strength of intimacy, which is essential for effective interpersonal relationships. We hope you'll join us again next week!

Forrest and Dr. Rick explore “manifesting:” the idea that our thoughts impact the world around us, and by changing those thoughts we can change our lives. All the stories we tell ourselves that our work or our life has to be perfect before we can get started or move forward, holds us back and stress us out from fully experiencing life. What would happen if you dared yourself to do it anyway? To do it, whatever your it is, even if it meant it wasn’t perfect?

Perfectionism masks itself in accomplishments but it’s really about not wanting to fail.

Let go of perfect and strive for adaptability instead.
