Ep. 973 - 15 Days That Shook The World

    enMarch 17, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Effectiveness of Long-Term Response to Coronavirus PandemicThe long-term effectiveness of current global response measures to the coronavirus pandemic is uncertain, as the risk of reinfection and limited ICU bed availability remain concerns. Different countries are pursuing various strategies, but their sustainability is uncertain, especially without a vaccine.

The current global response to the coronavirus pandemic involves shutting down daily life to flatten the curve and prevent overwhelming healthcare systems. However, the question remains whether this approach will be effective in the long term. If people reinfect each other once restrictions are lifted, the number of cases could surge again, especially among the elderly population. China and Hong Kong have shown promising signs of stopping the virus, but it's unclear if they've achieved a permanent solution. The availability of ICU beds and ventilators remains a critical concern. The United States, UK, and Denmark are pursuing different strategies, with the US advocating for a stay-at-home policy, the UK initially pushing for herd immunity, and Denmark trying a hybrid approach. The sustainability of these measures, especially if a vaccine takes 12-18 months to develop, is a significant concern.

    • Balancing Health and Economic Considerations During the PandemicDenmark aims to protect the elderly while allowing young people to build herd immunity, but this approach may lead to prolonged economic hardship. Essential businesses can be accessed online to minimize physical visits and maintain economic activity.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic poses significant challenges for public policy, requiring difficult trade-offs between health and economic considerations. Older adults are encouraged to stay home to avoid infection, but this approach may mean extended economic shutdowns and potential job losses. Denmark aims to protect the elderly while allowing young people to build herd immunity, but this comes with the risk of prolonged economic hardship. Meanwhile, essential businesses, like auto parts stores, can be accessed online to minimize the need for physical visits. For instance, rockauto.com offers a vast catalog, competitive pricing, and convenient delivery. Ultimately, the pandemic requires careful planning and consideration of various factors, including healthcare capacity, economic stability, and public safety.

    • Undetected coronavirus cases contribute significantly to the spread of the virusFor every confirmed COVID-19 case, there are likely 5 to 10 undetected cases in the community, emphasizing the need for widespread testing and contact tracing to prevent further transmission

There are likely many more people with undetected coronavirus infections than confirmed cases, and these individuals may be responsible for the majority of new infections. According to a report in the New York Times, for every confirmed case, there are likely another 5 to 10 undetected cases in the community. These individuals, who often have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, are less infectious than confirmed cases but still contribute significantly to the spread of the virus. This information is crucial for policymakers as they consider when and how to reopen the economy, as widespread testing and contact tracing will be necessary to identify and isolate these individuals to prevent further transmission. The report also highlights the importance of developing inexpensive tests to make testing more accessible to the general population. The analysis, which used data from China, found that after the Chinese government implemented widespread testing and lockdowns, the number of identified cases increased significantly. However, the number of undetected cases for every confirmed one can vary significantly from country to country. The researchers noted that the unidentified cases in China before the lockdown did not necessarily cause milder cases in the newly infected. The Washington Post also provided an interesting analysis of infection models, showing how easily the virus can spread when people are able to move freely without restrictions.

    • Three Approaches to Controlling Disease SpreadModerate social distancing, where a quarter of the population moves around while the rest stays home, can significantly slow down the spread of a disease but doesn't develop herd immunity and may require continued restrictions.

The spread of a disease like COVID-19 without any restrictions can lead to the entire population being infected in a short amount of time, but recoveries will follow quickly. However, this approach does not account for deaths and may put a strain on the healthcare system. Alternatively, quarantining a portion of the population can prevent the spread within that group, but infected individuals may escape and cause a secondary spike in infections. Moderate social distancing, where a quarter of the population moves around while the rest stays home, can significantly slow down the spread of the disease, but it does not develop herd immunity and may require continued restrictions. The ultimate solution to ending the disease vector remains uncertain.

    • Strategies for delaying the spread of the Wuhan virusAssumptions about warmer weather and a soon-to-be-developed vaccine drive US strategy to delay virus spread, but success depends on availability of ICU beds and medical capacity

The United States is implementing strategies of moderate and extensive social distancing to delay the spread of the Wuhan virus, with the hope that the summer weather will help reduce the virus's transmission and the eventual development of a vaccine will put an end to the pandemic. This approach is based on the assumption that warmer weather will kill off the virus and that a vaccine will be developed soon. The success of this strategy hinges on these assumptions, as well as the availability of sufficient ICU beds and medical capacity to handle the sick. If these conditions are not met, the social distancing measures may not be enough to prevent widespread infection and increased mortality, particularly among older populations.

    • Financial Implications of COVID-19 PandemicThe pandemic's economic impact could lead to a depression if the lockdown continues, governments are providing temporary relief through bond sales, but long-term financial security is crucial, secure life insurance for family protection.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has significant financial implications as various policies like no quarantine, partial quarantine, or total quarantine have vastly different economic consequences. If the economy stays in lockdown until a vaccine is available, which could take 12-18 months, it could lead to a depression instead of a recession. The government is stepping in to prevent losses and defaults on loans, but this policy cannot be permanent. The funding for this comes from selling bonds, but if the rest of the economy is shut down, there's a question of who can afford to buy them. Countries are in the same situation, so selling bonds to each other might not be a viable solution. It's essential to prepare for the future by securing life insurance to protect families' financial wellbeing.

    • Bond market uncertainty and potential collapseIf the coronavirus crisis continues, the bond market could collapse due to uncertainty and financial strain. The government may inflate the currency and distribute cash to stimulate the economy, but this could lead to rising prices and decreased value of savings. The stock market is uncertain, and some economists predict a U-shaped recovery.

If the coronavirus crisis persists for the next 12 to 18 months, the bond market could collapse due to the uncertainty and financial strain caused by widespread industry shutdowns. The federal government may then consider inflating the currency and distributing cash to stimulate the economy, but this could lead to rising prices and decreased value of savings. The hope is that the economy will recover once the virus is contained, but if not, drastic public policy decisions will be necessary. The stock market is uncertain due to the lack of new information, and many economists predict a U-shaped recovery. It's important to note that the rising number of reported cases is a good sign as it indicates increased testing, not necessarily new infections.

    • Staying Home: A Smart Solution with Stamps.comPrint official US postage 24/7, save time & money, avoid post office during uncertain times with Stamps.com's 4-week trial, free postage, & digital scale offer.

In light of the current situation and the increasing number of shelter-in-place orders across the country, using Stamps.com for your mailing needs is a smart and convenient solution. This online platform allows you to print official US postage 24/7, save time and money, and avoid the hassle of going to the post office during these uncertain times. With a special offer that includes a 4-week trial, free postage, and a digital scale, it's an excellent opportunity to try it out. Additionally, staying home and practicing social distancing is crucial in helping to curb the spread of coronavirus. The Bay Area's recent shelter-in-place orders for over 6.7 million people are likely to become the standard across America, with essential businesses remaining open and non-essential ones closed or shifted to remote work. The airline industry is also facing serious challenges with domestic travel essentially coming to a standstill. In summary, using Stamps.com for your mailing needs is a practical and cost-effective solution that aligns with current guidelines for social distancing and staying home.

    • Constitutional debates during crisisDespite crises, food supply remains stable and Americans shouldn't hoard. Uncertainty about length of outbreak, but potential for economic rebound post-crisis. Focus on getting through crisis rather than easy monetary policies.

During times of crisis, negotiations between different branches of government can lead to constitutional debates, as seen recently with Ohio's election situation. However, the food supply chain remains stable, and there is no need for hoarding. The length of the coronavirus outbreak and related restrictions is uncertain, but it's unlikely that Americans will shelter in place for several months. President Trump has acknowledged the potential for a recession, but once the crisis passes, there could be a significant economic rebound. The focus should be on getting through the crisis rather than trying to stimulate the economy with easy monetary policies.

    • Urging Americans to follow guidelines to slow COVID-19 spreadPresident Trump and health officials urge Americans to work from home, avoid large gatherings, and follow guidelines to help defeat COVID-19. The focus is on getting through the crisis and implementing measures to slow its spread, with the hope of a rebounding economy and stock market once the virus is under control.

The current focus is on getting through the COVID-19 crisis and implementing measures to slow its spread, with the hope that the economy and stock market will rebound once the virus is under control. President Trump and health officials are urging Americans to follow guidelines, such as working from home and avoiding large gatherings, to help defeat the virus. A vaccine or effective treatment is the ultimate goal, but until then, the country is making critical changes and sacrifices to get through this together. The government is also working on developing antiviral therapies and other treatments to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms. The end date for the crisis is uncertain, but officials are looking at successful responses from countries around the world to guide their strategy.

    • 15 days to slow the spread: A call to actionFollow local and state guidelines, practice social distancing, and avoid large gatherings to protect vulnerable populations and buy time for the government to catch up, with significant impact on economy and personal lives.

The current response to the coronavirus outbreak involves a coordinated effort between local, state, and federal authorities. The president's "15 days to slow the spread" initiative does not mean an end to restrictions after that period, but rather a call to action to prevent the rapid spread of the virus and buy time for the government to catch up. The guidelines urge individuals to follow the instructions of their local and state authorities, practice social distancing, and avoid large gatherings. The impact on the economy and personal lives is significant, but staying home and following guidelines can help protect vulnerable populations. The full effects of the measures will not be known until the summer.

    • New York Governor Urges Federal Help Amidst Rising COVID-19 CasesGovernor Cuomo requests ICU beds, testing capabilities, and Army Corps of Engineers to build temporary medical facilities as COVID-19 cases surge. The US has fewer hospital beds proportionately than affected countries, but progress is being made and individual safety precautions are necessary.

The number of COVID-19 cases is rising, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging the federal government for more resources to handle the crisis. Cuomo has criticized the federal response, stating that the US should have acted on a national basis like other affected countries. He's requested ICU beds, testing capabilities, and the mobilization of the Army Corps of Engineers to build temporary medical facilities. The federal government has started commercial buying of paper to help small businesses and is considering freeing up the Army Corps of Engineers for this purpose. The urgency comes from the potential overwhelming of the healthcare system, with projections suggesting millions of people could require hospitalization. The US currently has fewer hospital beds proportionately than countries like China, South Korea, and Italy, but the spread of the disease is not as rapid as in those countries. Despite the criticisms, there seems to be progress with the escalating counts not seen in China or South Korea, indicating a potential economic recovery once the situation is under control. However, it's crucial for individuals to take precautions, and owning a firearm could be beneficial for safety during these uncertain times.

    • BCM's commitment to producing professional-grade rifles for self-protectionBCM, founded by a marine veteran, builds reliable rifles to combat standards, ensuring safety in uncertain times

Bravo Company Manufacturing takes the responsibility of producing rifles very seriously. Founded by a marine veteran over two decades ago, BCM builds professional-grade rifles to combat standards, believing every American deserves the same level of protection. Every component is hand-assembled and tested to ensure reliability in potentially life-threatening situations. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the importance of self-protection and family safety is heightened. BCM's commitment to providing reliable tools aligns with the need for security in uncertain times. Additionally, the coronavirus situation continues to evolve, with Italy and Spain seeing escalating cases, while China's numbers have remained stable. The United States currently has around 5,000 diagnosed cases, with most deaths occurring in nursing homes. The controversy of the day revolves around President Trump labeling the virus as the "Chinese virus," which is not controversial and actually beneficial for transparency. Lastly, Daily Wire membership offers exclusive access to content, community, and events, providing a sense of connection during these isolating times. The proposed 850 billion dollar emergency fiscal package by the federal government aims to address the economic impact of the pandemic.

    • COVID-19 Impact on Small Businesses and Controversial Labeling of the VirusThe pandemic's financial impact on small businesses could be eased by targeted support, but the virus's spread continues to hinder economic activity. The labeling of the virus as the 'Chinese virus' is a political issue, not a reflection of the Chinese people or their government's handling of the crisis.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant impact on small businesses, and the targeted financial support towards commercial paper could help alleviate the burden for those affected. However, it won't reactivate economic activity, as the coronavirus continues to spread globally. There's been a controversial debate surrounding the labeling of the virus, with some accusing it of being racist. The origin of the virus in Wuhan, China, has led to accusations against the Chinese government for not acting swiftly enough to contain it. In response, Chinese diplomats have started spreading conspiracy theories, attempting to shift blame towards the United States. Amidst this, there are growing concerns about the long-term implications of doing business with China, given its human rights violations and disregard for global health. The virus being labeled as the "Chinese virus" is seen as a referendum on the Chinese government, not the people of China or Chinese people abroad. In other news, Mike Pence has asked construction companies to donate masks to the medical community, and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US is continuously rising, with over 5,000 cases and 97 deaths reported. The increasing numbers are a sign of progress, as more testing is being conducted to get the situation under control.

    • Escaping Uncertainty with Edgar Allan Poe and Accountability from Public FiguresDuring the pandemic, Poe's dark tales offer an escape while public figures like Mayor de Blasio must demonstrate accountability and consistency in their actions.

Edgar Allan Poe's writing, particularly his pandemic story "The Mask of the Red Death," provides an excellent escape for those seeking a dark and creepy read during these uncertain times. Meanwhile, politicians like New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio have been criticized for their inconsistent actions and statements regarding the coronavirus crisis. Despite calling for a national solution and a war footing against the virus, de Blasio was caught going to the gym despite city-wide closures, highlighting the need for accountability and consistency from public figures during this pandemic. Additionally, the importance of reading classics like Poe's works and the role of companies like Amazon in keeping the country functioning during this time have also been discussed.

    • Politics Divides Amidst Global CrisisPoliticians prioritize agendas over people's wellbeing, cooperation and coordination lacking, and the politicization of the response could have lasting consequences.

Politics continues to be a divisive force even during a global crisis, with politicians and media figures making extreme comparisons and prioritizing their agendas over the wellbeing of the people. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's gym visit while urging others to stay home is just one example of this disconnect. Meanwhile, Representative James Clyburn's comparison of Trump and the Republicans to the Nazis highlights the escalating rhetoric. Despite the seriousness of the situation, cooperation and coordination between political leaders have been lacking. Even in times of crisis, professional politicians seem unable to put aside their differences and work together for the greater good. The pandemic is a temporary situation, but the damage caused by the politicization of the response could have lasting consequences. It's important for all of us to stay informed, stay calm, and do our part to help each other get through this difficult time.

    • The Importance of Accountability During a CrisisDuring a crisis, it's crucial to remain vigilant and ask tough questions to ensure accountability and prevent double standards in the media.

While the coronavirus pandemic has led to major city shutdowns in an effort to save lives, it's important to consider the potential consequences for our constitutional rights. Meanwhile, in a seemingly unrelated story, former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was found in a hotel room with a male prostitute and meth, yet the media seems to be giving him a pass. These incidents highlight the importance of accountability and the potential for double standards in the media. It's crucial to remain vigilant and ask tough questions, even in the midst of a crisis. The pandemic and the Gillum scandal serve as a reminder that our civic education and awareness are more important than ever.

    8. Quest for a Vaccine

    8. Quest for a Vaccine

Medical Scientist Dr Gagandeep Kang talks to host Pavan Srinath about the development of vaccines, ongoing efforts on COVID-19, and the challenges of developing immunity and resistance against the pandemic.

More than a hundred vaccine candidates are being developed across the world, with several novel vaccine efforts entering human clinical trials in April 2020. Dr. Kang unpacks this unprecedented effort at vaccine development, and discusses the limits of our existing scientific knowledge about COVID-19. Dr Kang shares her thoughts on India’s role in global vaccine security, and discusses our current knowledge on human immunity to the SARS-COV-2 virus.

Dr Gagandeep Kang is the Executive Director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute. She is an award-winning medical scientist who is a key contributor to the understanding of diarrhoeal diseases, rotavirus epidemiology and vaccinology in India, with a stellar career at Christian Medical College Vellore. She is also the Chair of the National Technical Advisory Group for Immunisation and the Vice Chair for the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations.

Why COVID will stay when the pandemic ends

Why COVID will stay when the pandemic ends

Despite more vaccinations around the world, infectious disease experts are coming to a consensus that COVID, as a viral strain, isn’t going anywhere soon. Instead, it’s likely to be endemic, meaning the virus will become a constant in our lives like seasonal mutations of the flu. A major factor in how well we control COVID in the years to come will be dependent on herd immunity. What does this mean? Is it even achievable? Dr. David Fisman, an epidemiology professor at University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, explains how the world is “going to have to figure out how to live with an endemic pathogen that’s nasty.”

    Vaccine Wars [S3, E16]

    Vaccine Wars [S3, E16]

The international hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine is the most consequential medical challenge of the 21st century. The race is marked by both intense collaboration among scientists and fierce competition between governments – particularly between China and the US. As coronavirus cases mount and economies limp through lockdowns, nations are not just competing for a life-saving vaccine – they’re jockeying for political glory and a leg up on the rest of the world. And even after a vaccine is developed, count on clashes over adequate and ethical distributions. Professor Lawrence Gostin joins Altamar to discuss the geopolitics of the global vaccine race – and how countries can mitigate winner-take-all risks. Gostin is the Director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University and Director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law. He is also a Professor of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
