Episode 35: Exclusive Interview with MCAT Team Members

    enMay 15, 2020
Who manages MCAT operations at AAMC?
What changes were made to MCAT scoring?
How can disadvantaged students prepare for the MCAT?
What resources are available on the AMCAS Prep Hub?
How should students select MCAT test dates during the pandemic?

    • MCAT Changes and Resources with Jennifer Antonio and Leslie De LeonThe MCAT team at AAMC has made updates to test content, scoring, and policies, and offers various resources like free and official prep materials to help students prepare effectively, with a focus on equitable access for disadvantaged backgrounds.

The MCAT team at the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) has recently implemented several changes to the MCAT exam and related resources. Jennifer Antonio, the senior director of MCAT Business Operations, manages the operational programs that support MCAT delivery to over 85,000 examinees per year, and Leslie De Leon, the director of MCAT preparation products, guides the development of MCAT official prep resources. They discussed common questions from students regarding these changes. Some key updates include modifications to test content, scoring, and test-taking policies. Additionally, they highlighted various test prep resources, including free and official MCAT preparation materials, to help students prepare effectively. The team's focus is on expanding resources for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure equitable access to medical education.

    • MCAT Changes Amidst COVID-19: Flexibility, Safety, and IntegrityThe AAMC shortened the MCAT to 5 hours and 45 minutes, increased test frequencies, expedited scoring, waived fees, and extended subscriptions to help students apply earlier during the pandemic.

The AAMC has implemented significant changes to the MCAT program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing exam integrity, safety, and flexibility for students. The changes include shortening the test to 5 hours and 45 minutes, administering it three times a day at all test centers and dates, expediting scoring, waiving rescheduling fees, and extending examinee subscriptions to preparation products. These adjustments increase testing appointments by 50% and allow students to receive scores earlier in the application cycle. Despite technical issues during registration, the plan went into effect on May 29th, providing much-needed flexibility for applicants during this unprecedented time.

    • AMC Registration Challenges and SolutionsThe AMC overcame registration issues by shortening exam duration, increasing testing sessions, and offering a free online tutorial. This resulted in over 78,000 appointments scheduled for late May to September.

The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) faced challenges during a recent registration opening, resulting in frustration for many examinees. However, the organization learned valuable lessons from the experience and has implemented a plan to increase capacity and offer more testing opportunities. The exam duration has been shortened from 7.5 hours to 5.5 hours, allowing for three testing sessions per day at each center. The number of scored questions remains the same, but other elements, such as the end-of-day survey and tutorial, have been removed to reduce seat time. The AMC team offers a free online tutorial to help students familiarize themselves with the exam's functionality. Despite the challenges, the organization is excited about the additional capacity and the ability to monitor the testing process as the pandemic unfolds. The registration opening resulted in approximately 78,000 appointments scheduled between late May and September, and most markets still have available appointments in June. The AMC team is committed to ensuring a smooth testing experience for all students.

    • MCAT format remains unchanged despite shortened examThe MCAT exam format, content, and scoring remain the same, and students should continue preparing with the same materials to maintain a consistent pacing.

Despite the MCAT exam being shortened due to the pandemic, the format, content, and scoring remain the same. Students do not need to adjust their preparation strategies, as they will still be tested in all four sections, and the time per question will remain consistent. The AAMC has been in close communication with admissions offices to ensure that they have all the necessary information regarding the exam. Additionally, many medical schools may include additional questions in their secondaries about how the pandemic is impacting applicants' lives. Therefore, it's essential to continue preparing using the same materials to maintain a consistent pacing.

    • Adjust MCAT study plans with free resources on AMCAS Prep HubStudents can adjust study schedules using free resources on AMCAS Prep Hub, including a study plan guide, 12 free practice questions, and extended access to MCAT products. Income eligibility requirements for fee assistance have also been expanded.

Students facing schedule changes due to the ongoing pandemic can adjust their MCAT study plans using the free study plan guide available on the AMCAS Prep Hub. The Hub also offers a Practice Exam Feature Tool with 12 free practice questions, allowing students to familiarize themselves with exam features before test day. All online resources, including Khan Academy videos and flashcards, remain accessible. Additionally, access to all MCAT products has been extended for those whose benefits were expiring between March 1st and September 30th. Furthermore, the fee assistance program's income eligibility requirements have been expanded for the 2020 fee assistance program. Students should take advantage of these resources to practice using the exam features and optimize their study schedules.

    • AMC making MCAT resources more accessibleThe AMC offers free MCAT prep resources, including Khan Academy videos, content outlines, open source textbooks, and a free sample test starting in October 2023. Eligibility for the Fee Assistance Program has expanded, providing free access to all 14 online preparation products for eligible students.

The American Medical College (AMC) is making preparatory resources for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) more accessible for students, especially those who are educationally and economically disadvantaged. The AMC offers free resources such as Khan Academy videos, content outlines, and open source textbooks through their MCAT Hub. Additionally, the sample test will be free starting in October 2023, and the Fee Assistance Program has expanded eligibility requirements, providing free access to all 14 online preparation products for eligible students. The AMC also recently launched a pre med resource page, which offers a wealth of information for students planning to apply to medical school. The resources are designed to help students navigate the MCAT preparation process and reduce feelings of overwhelm by providing all the necessary information in one place. The AMC encourages students to explore these resources, regardless of their current timeline for taking the MCAT.

    • Preparing for the MCAT CARS sectionRead broadly, use Khan Academy resources, practice timed reading, and identify question skills with the MCAT exam tool.

Effective preparation for the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Section (CARS) of the MCAT involves a combination of strategies. The MCAT exam tool provides a detailed overview and tips on identifying the skills being tested in each question. Reading broadly across various types of texts and disciplines is also recommended. The Khan Academy section offers helpful videos that walk through entire passage sets and highlight keywords. Additionally, timed reading practice is essential to prepare for the test's time-constrained format. Students who have succeeded in the MCAT share similar study techniques, including reading broadly, using Khan Academy resources, and practicing timed reading. The MCAT team is also working on a new low-cost CARS product for the 2021 testing year. Ultimately, there are various resources and study techniques available for the CARS section, and finding the one that works best for an individual applicant can make a significant difference in their exam performance.

    • Stay updated on test center status during pandemicKeep email addresses updated, check for local guidelines, and stay informed of any changes or closures.

During the pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding test centers and their availability. Students should consider the status of the pandemic in their area when selecting a test date and look at local safety, health, and travel guidance. The test administrators have increased testing capacity and will follow state and local guidance in determining when test centers will be open or closed. Students should keep their email addresses associated with their registration up-to-date, as any changes or closures will be communicated via email. It's important to note that the pandemic is fluid, and emergency circumstances may cause last-minute test center closures. Students should check their primary email accounts regularly for updates from both the test administrators and Pearson VUE.

    • MCAT students can update contact info without alumni emailMCAT takers can prepare for health and safety measures by practicing with masks and gloves during practice tests

Students taking the MCAT exam can update their contact information on the platform, even if they don't have an alumni email address. Regarding health and safety precautions, test centers are implementing rigorous measures such as social distancing, masks for both staff and examinees, gloves optional use, and enhanced disinfecting practices. It is recommended for students to practice taking the test with a mask and gloves to get accustomed to the experience and reduce anxiety on test day. Pearson VUE's website provides a comprehensive list of health and safety measures. Students can also wear masks and gloves during practice tests to prepare for the exam day experience. By practicing these precautions, students can mitigate some of the unknowns and focus on the exam itself.

    • Supporting Medical Students During Challenging TimesMCAT team offers free resources, encourages breaks, and provides updates for applicants during the pandemic, emphasizing their commitment to supporting future physicians.

During these challenging times, it's essential for medical students to be kind to themselves and understand that it's okay to take breaks when needed. The MCAT team emphasized the availability of free resources and encouraged students to utilize them, while also providing updates on their website, Twitter, and email. The MCAT team is committed to supporting the next generation of physicians and understands the frustration and disruption caused by the current situation. Applicants are encouraged to reflect on their readiness to take the MCAT and consider whether it's the right time for them, keeping in mind the importance of doing well on this high-stakes test. The team will continue to provide updates and resources, and applicants are encouraged to reach out with any questions or suggestions.

    • Discussing MCAT application process from diverse perspectivesSharing diverse experiences and perspectives humanizes and personalizes the MCAT application process, making it more relatable and understandable for students.

Importance of sharing diverse perspectives and experiences in the educational journey, specifically in relation to the MCAT application process. Jennifer and Leslie brought valuable insights to the table, humanizing and personalizing the process for listeners. Their voices added depth and context to the application process, making it more relatable and understandable for those going through it. Christian's platform provided an excellent opportunity for this dialogue to take place, and all parties involved expressed their hope that these conversations could continue. The impact of these discussions is expected to reach a large number of students, and the potential for future collaborations was expressed with enthusiasm. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of open dialogue and the sharing of experiences in the educational journey.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Tracy Kedian, the Associate Dean for Admissions, at the UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA. Dr. Kedian sheds light on the unique aspects of UMass Chan's curriculum, known as VISTA. This innovative curriculum fosters curiosity, inquiry, and equity through group and problem-based learning, along with extensive use of medical simulation. One exciting feature of UMass Chan is its commitment to serving underserved populations. With a focus on health disparities and public and community health, the school offers two distinct tracks with its regional campuses - the Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health track, based at Baystate Health Systems in western MA and the LEAD@Lahey track, located in Burlington, MA, that concentrates on leadership skills and health systems science to prepare future medical leaders.

From Gas Pumps to the Polls, Kinzinger's Tired Act, Fauci's Back
Join Jim and Greg as they applaud the GOP's ingenious new strategy to register angry voters at the gas pump ahead of the upcoming midterms. They rebuke Illinois Rep. A Cutie at the Clubs

Mark had to be an adult after a period of procrastination, and he wasn’t too thrilled. The DMV is fun, and Grant gives Mark some hope. Grant got some texts, and your hosts determined texts should go the way of email.

Mark brings The Adventures of Business Cat. Mark updates Grant on the state of his job. Grant does a PSA for liberal arts colleges, and carefully dances around specifics as he discusses his own job.

Grant brings an Overboard comic and tells a story that lasts both too long and not long enough. Then for some reason, lint is discussed.
