    • Prioritizing Customer Needs: Burrows Furniture, Mint Mobile, and PlushCareBurrows Furniture simplifies assembly, introduces new colors, uses durable materials, and offers fast free shipping. Mint Mobile bucked inflation trends by lowering prices. PlushCare provides telehealth services for weight loss with FDA-approved meds and accepts most insurances. Doctors can date without stigma, but timing reveals info depends on context.

Burrows Furniture prioritizes customer needs with easy assembly, new color options, durable materials, and fast free shipping. Mint Mobile, on the other hand, goes against the norm by lowering prices instead of raising them during inflation. PlushCare offers telehealth services for weight loss, including prescribing FDA-approved medications, and accepts most insurance plans. In the world of dating, being a doctor is no longer a taboo topic, and the timing to reveal this information depends on the individual and the context, whether online or offline.

    • Women in male-dominated professions face complexities when disclosing on dating appsWomen in male-dominated professions weigh the pros and cons of disclosing their profession on dating apps for fear of intimidating or competitive reactions, but authenticity and genuine connection should be the priority.

The decision to disclose one's profession on dating apps can be a complex issue for women, particularly for those in male-dominated fields like medicine. Some women may choose not to disclose their profession upfront due to potential negative reactions from men who may feel intimidated or competitive. However, in the online world where first impressions are based on limited information, some argue that it's important to include this information to stand out. Ultimately, the decision depends on individual preferences and comfort levels. It's important to remember that authenticity and building a genuine connection should be the priority in any dating situation.

    • Authenticity and charm matter more than leading with professional identity in datingBe genuine, use charm, and avoid overtly sexualized images for effective dating app profiles

Being a doctor or having a professional identity can be an attractive quality for women seeking romantic relationships. However, leading with this identity may not be authentic or effective, especially in the context of modern dating apps where brief profiles are the norm. Instead, it's recommended to use charm and find a natural way to mention your profession later on. Additionally, avoid using overtly sexualized or provocative images in your profile picture. When it comes to medical procedures like pap smears or vaginal exams, it's important to remember that the stirrups are used to position the woman comfortably for the examination, not to imply that she is the object of the examination. Overall, authenticity, charm, and a sense of humor can go a long way in navigating the complexities of modern dating.

    • Lifestyle choices impact health significantlyA plant-based diet, stress reduction, and exercise can reverse heart disease, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle choices for health.

Lifestyle choices play a significant role in treating, preventing, and even reversing diseases. This approach to medicine, known as lifestyle medicine, focuses on factors like diet, sleep, exercise, social connection, and stress reduction. For instance, studies have shown that a plant-based diet, combined with stress reduction and exercise, can help reverse heart disease, something that medication alone cannot accomplish. It's essential to remember that our lifestyle choices have a profound impact on our health. Additionally, the speakers on the podcast, The Resurrection Men, create all the music and editing for their show, which can be found on Spotify and YouTube. Up next, they will be interviewing Rakesh Jadhwani, a hospitalist and lifestyle medicine specialist, to discuss his personal journey from being a burnt-out doctor to a more centered and happy one.

    • Lifestyle choices impact chronic disease developmentAddressing lifestyle causes can prevent hospitalizations for chronic diseases, leading to meaningful change in healthcare

Lifestyle choices significantly contribute to the development of chronic diseases, and addressing these root causes can prevent hospitalizations. The speaker, a hospitalist, has witnessed this trend in his practice, admitting patients with heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and their complications. He felt frustrated sending them back into the world without addressing the underlying causes. Personal experiences, such as neglecting his own health during residency, further emphasized this issue. The medical field can be linear and challenging to deviate from, but recognizing the importance of lifestyle choices in disease prevention can lead to meaningful change. The speaker's decision not to become a nephrologist was a personal catalyst, and he now finds fulfillment in helping patients as a hospitalist.

    • Mental health struggles among doctors and seeking helpDoctors must prioritize their mental health, seek professional help when needed, and utilize available resources to ensure they are in optimal condition for patient care.

Mental health struggles, including depression, are common among doctors, and seeking help is crucial. The speaker, a doctor himself, shared his personal experience of dealing with depression during medical school and residency. He acknowledged that the demanding nature of the medical profession often makes doctors feel that taking care of themselves is a weakness, leading them to ignore their mental health needs. However, he emphasized that self-care is an essential part of life and that ignoring mental health issues can have serious consequences. He encouraged doctors to prioritize their mental health, seek professional help when needed, and take advantage of available resources, such as sick leave, to ensure they are in the best possible condition to care for their patients. The speaker's story highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health issues in the medical community and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in healthcare.

    • Discovering the Power of Gratitude and MindfulnessIncorporating daily practices like gratitude and mindfulness meditation can significantly enhance happiness and relationships.

Small changes in daily habits, such as practicing gratitude and meditation, can significantly improve overall happiness and well-being. The speaker shares his personal experience of feeling toxic and unhappy, which negatively affected his family. He attended a wellness talk that introduced him to the concept of gratitude and mindfulness meditation through the Headspace app. Initially skeptical, he decided to give it a try and was surprised by the positive impact it had on his mood and relationships. His wife noticed the change and encouraged him to continue. The speaker emphasizes that even small adjustments, like taking 10 minutes a day for oneself, can lead to noticeable improvements in happiness and overall quality of life.

    • Meditation and Exercise: Two Sides of the Same Coin?Meditation helps increase self-awareness and authenticity, leading to positive changes in personal and professional life. Exercise, while promoting physical health, can also provide a meditative experience and inspire self-improvement.

Meditation and exercise, while often practiced together for mental and physical well-being, serve distinct purposes. Meditation is about being present, raising awareness of thoughts, and learning to respond instead of react. Exercise, on the other hand, can be a meditative experience but also involves physical reflection and self-improvement. The speaker shares how he used meditation to become more self-aware and reflect on his actions, particularly in his professional life, leading him to make positive changes. He emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself, both at home and at work, and the benefits this can bring to personal and professional relationships. The speaker also mentions how he used to prioritize being collegial over personal well-being, but learned that true authenticity leads to better connections and outcomes.

    • Lifestyle changes for better healthAdopting a plant-based diet and exercising regularly can improve health, but everyone's experience is unique, find what works best for you, and consider other treatments like therapy for mental health conditions.

Making lifestyle changes, such as adopting a plant-based diet and exercising regularly, can lead to significant improvements in overall health and well-being. These changes can help individuals feel more energetic, sleep better, and experience a noticeable difference in how they feel. However, it's important to remember that everyone's experience is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. For some, a complete shift to a plant-based diet may be necessary to feel the full benefits, while others may find that making small changes, such as reducing meat consumption or focusing on anti-inflammatory foods, is enough. Ultimately, the key is to find what works best for you and make sustainable, long-term changes that support your health goals. Additionally, it's important to remember that medication and other treatments, such as therapy or counseling, may still be necessary for individuals dealing with mental health conditions like depression.

    • Shift perspective on healthy habitsViewing healthy habits as gifts, not chores, can make them enjoyable and sustainable. Long-term benefits outweigh short-term pleasures.

Focusing on how healthy habits make us feel, rather than viewing them as chores, can make a significant difference in our lives. Rakesh shared his personal experience of realizing the long-term benefits of eating well and taking care of himself, which led to improved mental health and reduced reliance on medication. He advised Joe, hypothetically, to shift his perspective on healthy practices as gifts rather than burdens. This simple mindset change can help make these habits more enjoyable and sustainable. It's essential to remember that the short-term pleasure of indulging in unhealthy choices may not be worth the negative consequences in the long run. Instead, focusing on the long-term benefits of healthy habits can make them more appealing and easier to incorporate into our daily lives.

59: The Healthy Kids Myth busted with Virginia Sole-Smith

59: The Healthy Kids Myth busted with Virginia Sole-Smith

    The “Myth Busters” Series

In this week’s episode we are switching gears from busting myths about adult bodies and chatting about kids bodies by busting the myth...that “kids today aren’t healthy!” This myth is one that most parents are so confused by: are their kids healthy? Is the food we are feeding our kids nourishing them? Are kids today too sedentary? Should parents be DOING something about their kids health?

This is obviously a complicated myth to completely pull apart with multiple layers about the food industry, weight and BMI, and the overarching concept of health, so we touch on all of these but focus on how this myth has narrowed pediatric health to just diet and exercise. We are going to give you a brief history of this myth’s origins and then we are interviewing a passionate myth buster on kids health: Virginia Sole-Smith, author of The Eating Instinct and the newsletter Burnt Toast. A healthy child is more than the number on the scale: it is a child who can be in their body with confidence and self-respect, regardless of their abilities, size, race, or socioeconomic status.

How Josh LaJaunie Lost 200+ Pounds & Reinvented Himself: Thoughts On Mindset, Habits & Giving Back

How Josh LaJaunie Lost 200+ Pounds & Reinvented Himself: Thoughts On Mindset, Habits & Giving Back
I have never met a more inspirational everyman example of healthy, transformative living than Josh LaJaunie. After 400+ episodes of the podcast, our initial conversation way back in December of 2013 (RRP 63) remains one of my favorite and most popular episodes in the history of the show, followed closely by our second conversation in June 2015 (RRP 152). There's a reason for that. Sure, Josh lost 200+ pounds. He overcame tremendous obstacles to restore and maintain his health. He reinvented himself as athlete, crushing marathons, winning an ultra and even gracing the cover of Runner's World magazine. You might have seen Josh on The Today Show. Perhaps you caught him on Good Morning America. Certainly, Josh's personal triumphs are worthy of celebrating. But I'm emphatic it's his giant heart that captured the the media's eye. 100% genuine and utterly authentic, it's Josh's love and devotion to returning the gift in service of his friends, family, community and strangers that sets him apart — and makes me prouder than you can imagine to call him friend. Good things happen to good people who do good for others. For those new to the show, Josh's story — as laid out in his self-described manifesto — begins in marshy southern Louisiana. A self-avowed “swamp dweller” from Bayou Lafourche, he was a big kid surrounded by an even bigger loving family, united by their shared adoration of food. Despite being recruited to play college football, college life left him so disillusioned, he dropped out, returning home aimless and unmoored. He found work in the family construction business, but like so many, started living for the weekend: partying, hunting, fishing, cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, and feasting on his favorite local delicacies — po boys, jambalaya & barbecue. Lots of barbecue. It's just what you do down in Bayou Lafourche. It wasn't long before Josh tipped 400+ on the scale. Outwardly he seemed fine with it. But deep down he was dying — his despair, embarrassment and shame escalating in lockstep with his declining self-esteem and overall well being. Then something happened. In 2010, Josh's beloved Saints achieved the impossible, winning the Super Bowl. It seems a small thing. But to Josh it was everything. Forever altering his perception of what is possible, he began to question the limits he imposed upon himself. Empowered, he began to “let go of his normal” and dismiss the embedded “that's just the way it is down here” mentality he was starting to understand often taints the logic of his region. A chain reaction of events ensued that set Josh on a path that literally changed everything. He adopted a 100% plant-based diet. He resumed a long, slow return to fitness. He committed to a top-to-bottom mindset shift. It wasn't overnight, but today he has multiple marathons under his belt. An ultramarathon victory. And a plan to scale the principles that saved his life to save others via his Missing Chins secret Facebook group and newly-hatched WellStart wellness start-up. The best part? It's just the beginning. Picking up where we last left off, this is Josh's story. Enjoy! Rich
