    About this Episode

As we've discovered on previous episodes of At Home in Bloomington, some of the best ideas start in a garage or barn. Oliver Winery began as a backyard hobby of Indiana University law professor William Oliver and as most good ideas do, quickly outgrew the barn (sound familiar, Switchyard Brewery?). Professor Oliver was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for the creation of small wineries in Indiana and opened the door for breweries and wineries to sell and serve their craft beverages on site. The Indiana Small Winery Act passed in 1971, and Oliver Winery opened in 1972. Today, Oliver is the state's oldest and largest winery, with over 450,000 cases of wine distributed per year (that's over 1.1 million gallons of wine). On this episode, we're joined by Assistant Events Manager, Dee Peters, and Tasting Room Sales Manager, Ben Smith. We learn that you don't need to know squat about wine to enjoy a tasting at their beautiful winery and that their Creekbend Crimson Cabernet is a delicious treat for a Thursday afternoon! We are doing our part to make a dent in the 1.1 million gallons. So grab a glass and join us!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 37, Dillman Farm. Another local gem that started in a garage. Head over to Oliver Winery, grab a bottle of wine and some Dillman Farm snacks (you can buy them at Oliver!). You can hang out right there, enjoy the gorgeous property and locally produced snacks and libations! And in our REAL-List segment, home inspections aren't required and there's no pass or fail. So what role does a home inspection play in the home buying/selling process? Listen and find out.

It goes without saying that times are weird. Here at the At Home in Bloomington podcast, we are, like everyone else, trying to navigate our way and do the right things. We have a few episodes previously recorded that are already in the can that we are going to drop. And here is one. This is one we all need and even though you can't go in person right now, there are options for online practice. The Kadampa Meditation Center is for everyone, bringing you ways to breath in the light and breath out the dark smoke. Sounds pretty good right about now, doesn't it? Please join us on this episode for a chat with Kelsang Gen Tsoglam, a Buddhist nun from the Kadampa Meditation Center, for some calming inspiration and a short meditation session!

    Episode 62: TedxBloomington
Big ideas. The world needs them right now. On every topic and in every field, encouraging the spread of big ideas and the excitement those ideas instill in others is what will cause change for the better. You may have heard of TED Talks? Those short talks posted online on a huge variety of subjects, designed to make us think? Did you know that Bloomington has our own TED series called TEDxBloomington? Local events and local speakers come together to create our own Ted-like experience. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Jennifer Bourland, executive producer of TEDxBloomington. She shares how TEDx works, how it's different from TED, what an event is like and much more.

We throw back to Episode 33, Monroe County History Center. The history center is a community resource that can be utilized in lots of different ways. Also, in our REAL-List segment, sometimes real estate transactions don't close. What are the major reasons and how can you handle them? Listen and learn!

Episode 61: Southern Indiana Scuba Diving Specialists

Episode 61: Southern Indiana Scuba Diving Specialists
I'm so excited about this episode, I don't even know if I can string a coherent sentence together. Lucky for me, you don't talk while scuba diving. That's right. Okay, okay. Full disclosure, I was only in about 10 feet of water. In a pool. Without sharks. But still. Did you know that Southern Indiana has a large contingent of scuba enthusiasts? I did not know this until I met and chatted with Casey Vallee, a dive instructor with Southern Indiana Scuba. Her enthusiasm for scuba is infectious and her patience for our nonsensical fish phobias was endless. Think you might be interested in seeing what scuba is all about? Be sure the listen to the very end of the episode - it might be worth it $$!

We also throwback to episode 22 with our friends at Class 101. They shared with us all we need to know about preparing our students for college, from test prep to writing the best essay (perhaps about the fascinating hobby of scuba?). And in our REAL-List segment, condo living can be a great option for some buyers. What makes it different than buying a single family home? Listen to our REAL List to find out!

    Episode 60: Bloomingfoods Co-Op

    Episode 60: Bloomingfoods Co-Op
Local. Is it a trendy word or is it truly a vital concept? We're voting for vital concept. Local businesses and business people have an intimate knowledge of our community needs. As Liam Neeson would say, "a very particular set of skills" that can only be "acquired over a very long career." What does that have to do with this episode's guest? Is it Liam Neeson? Not quite. But we talk with two of the general managers of our local food market juggernaut, Bloomingfoods Co-Op, Dee Bohler and Phil Phillipy, to learn more about the co-op's 44 year history ("a very long career"). This 44 year longevity has allowed Bloomingfoods to develop their "particular set of skills" that non-local businesses just can't match, that of keeping their shelves stocked with exactly what Bloomingtonians are looking for. We also chat about the community programs they have in place and what exactly is a co-op. (Hint: You do not have to be a member to shop there. There is no secret password! Bloomingfoods is open to all!)

In our throwback, we revisit Episode 5 of At Home in Bloomington with the Bloomington Salt Cave. Did you know that if you have a Bloomingfoods membership, you can also get a discount at the Salt Cave? And in our REAL-List segment, Never negotiated the purchase of a home before? No worries, we’ve got you covered as Deb shares what items, besides price, can be negotiated in a purchase agreement.

    Episode 59: Whole Sun Designs

    Episode 59: Whole Sun Designs
Today’s show is about magic. Not the pull a rabbit out of a hat or guess my card magic. Real magic. Turning silent sunshine into music and hot beams into freezing cold AC. The magic of solar power. We welcome Ryan Zaricki, owner of Whole Sun Designs to talk about the process of integrating solar power into your home and all the benefits that come along with it (and how to make the most of those benefits). This show is about what a homeowner needs to know about solar. We don't get too deeply into the science of solar. Because we'd prefer to just consider it magic!

In our Facebook Follow segment, check out Bloomington Co-Housing on Facebook. A guest on At Home In Bloomington's Episode 16, developer Loren Wood (also a supporter of Sycamore Land Trust), talks about the newest community being built in Bloomington and how it's not what you think it is! Episode 58: Meadowood

    Episode 58: Meadowood
At Home in Bloomington is about finding community. And that's literally what this episode is about. Community. And it's one of Deb's most favorite places on earth. If you’ve heard her talk, then you’ve probably heard her talk about it. No, it’s not Disneyworld. But we kind of love it for the same reason. The people there are always so happy and having fun. We're talking about Meadowood, a senior living community., but really a center of community for Bloomington. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Kathy Norris and Sandra McGow about what Meadowood is and has to offer as a senior living community, But we also talk what Meadowood has to offer to the entire community. You will be blown away by the free events that are available there on an almost daily basis. So whether you are planning for your future or just looking for a new way to explore today, Meadowood is a wonderful community resource.

In our throwback episode, we revisit At Home in Bloomington guests Paige Freitag and Erin Martoglio from episode 36. We met them at a presentation at Meadowood and learned so much about estate planning that we knew we had to share with our listeners. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb presents a few of her 10 Commandments for sellers. Planning on selling? Plan on listening to this!

    Episode 57: Bloomington Volunteer Network

    Episode 57: Bloomington Volunteer Network
Are you new to the community? Or maybe just want to make more friends? Today's show is a two-fer. Because you can meet people and make friends while making a difference. Volunteers are vital to so many organizations in Bloomington. And we are lucky enough to have a city government that recognizes that. In fact, in 1980, when then Mayor Frank McCloskey established the Bloomington Volunteer Action Center, it was only the 2nd center of its kind in the country (the first being New York City). So the belief in the value of Volunteering runs deep in Bloomington. How can you get involved? What are the requirements? How can you get your kids or entire family involved? We discuss these questions, along with how non-profits can take advantage of this resource, with the Director of the Bloomington Volunteer Network on this episode. Tune in and make a difference!

Also, we throwback to At Home in Bloomington, Episode 29 with Cheryl Smith of Consider it Done Transition Services. Learn how to declutter and put some of your unneeded items to good use with local non-profits. And in our REAL-List segment, learn about a popular technique buyers use to reduce the money out of pocket at closing! Sounds like a good deal!

Episode 56: Monroe County History Club

Episode 56: Monroe County History Club
History isn't so much about remembering "the Good Old days." If you really study and contemplate, you'll often gain a greater appreciation for today! (Never a bad thing to increase our gratitude, I think!) One of the best (and FREE) ways to connect with our local history is through the Monroe County History Club. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Michael Carter about the origins of the club, what's involved to be a member (nothing but showing up and maybe eating lunch!), how you can catch up on presentations you've missed and what the future holds for remembering the past.

We also throwback to At Home in Bloomington Episode 33, the Monroe County History Center. The opportunities with the History Center often go hand in hand with the History Club, though they are two separate entities. But like many groups and organizations in Bloomington, they see the value in collaborating and supporting each other. And in our REAL-List segment, we give you a high level overview of how a lender comes up with how much house you can afford. No calculators needed!

    Episode 55: Growing Opportunities

    Episode 55: Growing Opportunities
Collaboration, cooperation and innovation. Probably things our world could use more of and that's why we love this guest so much! Growing Opportunities collaborates with local businesses, cooperates with other non profits and is constantly working on innovative ways to hydroponically grow fresh produce year around. In a parking lot off East 10th Street. There's a double story here of fresh greens, grown in controlled and chemical free environment where only gloved hands touch the plant from seed to consumer. But there's also a story of jobs training for clients who want to work and confidence building along the way. Tons of greens being grown in a tiny footprint with a fraction of the soil, water and resources typically needed? Or building up a enthusiastic, skilled and reliable population of workers that are sorely needed in our area? Which is the bigger story? Trick question. They both are! Listen to our conversation with Errin Logsdon, Program Manager of Growing Opportunities and be inspired!

We also throwback to At Home in Bloomington Episode 18, Goldleaf Hydroponics. They are a huge supporter of Growing Opportunities. Congratulations to them on their new location, too! And in our REAL-List segment, we give you a realistic preview of what life is like as a Realtor, for those aspiring to the profession.

    Episode 54: Historic Tivoli Theatre

    Episode 54: Historic Tivoli Theatre
We did the math. It's not that far. Think about it this way, if you lived in Greenwood (Indiana), you'd probably not hesitate to drive to downtown Indianapolis to do something, right? This is the same distance. What are we talking about? Driving to Spencer, Indiana (just west of Bloomington a few miles) to check out one of their special places (and save money, too!). Spencer is home to the Historic Tivoli Theatre and in this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Andrea and Rob White (and baby Charlotte) and Jane Rubeck, all integral members of the Tivoli community, helping keep the history alive while creating a community gathering place featuring theater, music and $5 first run movies. $5? Really! And only $3 for a soda and popcorn! (and free movies on Thursday nights). And so much more! Not to mention a great restoration story full of bird infestations, massive foundation replacement, maybe some ghosts and replicating the stars in the sky in 1928 Check it out!

While you are thinking about Owen County, tune into our throwback episode, #45 with Uplands PEAK Sanctuary. We talk about all the important work the Sanctuary is doing and also touch on quite a bit of Owen County history! And in our REAL-List segment, we help you understand how to be a home buyer and seller at the same time. If you are thinking of transitioning to a new home, this one is for you.
