    Episode 65: Kadampa Meditation Center

    Episode 65: Kadampa Meditation Center
It goes without saying that times are weird. Here at the At Home in Bloomington podcast, we are, like everyone else, trying to navigate our way and do the right things. We are not currently recording full podcasts as our preference is to record face to face (we are going to try out some Zoom recording, though!). We have a few episodes previously recorded that are already in the can that we are going to drop. And here is one. This is one we all need and even though you can't go in person right now, there are options for online practice. The Kadampa Meditation Center is for everyone, bringing you ways to breath in the light and breath out the dark smoke. Sounds pretty good right about now, doesn't it? Please join us on this episode for a chat with Kelsang Gen Tsoglam, a Buddhist nun from the Kadampa Meditation Center, for some calming inspiration and a short meditation session!

We throw back to Episode 5, Bloomington Salt Cave. No better place in Bloomington to do some meditation! Then check out some top hints from REAL Real Estate Today podcast episode 43, which featured Cheryl Smith of Consider it Done. A few simple, no cost ways to prepare your home for sale can go a long way to maximizing your price.

    Episode 62: TedxBloomington

    Episode 62: TedxBloomington
Big ideas. The world needs them right now. On every topic and in every field, encouraging the spread of big ideas and the excitement those ideas instill in others is what will cause change for the better. You may have heard of TED Talks? Those short talks posted online on a huge variety of subjects, designed to make us think? Did you know that Bloomington has our own TED series called TEDxBloomington? Local events and local speakers come together to create our own Ted-like experience. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Jennifer Bourland, executive producer of TEDxBloomington. She shares how TEDx works, how it's different from TED, what an event is like and much more.

We throw back to Episode 33, Monroe County History Center. The history center is a community resource that can be utilized in lots of different ways. Also, in our REAL-List segment, sometimes real estate transactions don't close. What are the major reasons and how can you handle them? Listen and learn!

Episode 61: Southern Indiana Scuba Diving Specialists

Episode 61: Southern Indiana Scuba Diving Specialists
I'm so excited about this episode, I don't even know if I can string a coherent sentence together. Lucky for me, you don't talk while scuba diving. That's right. Okay, okay. Full disclosure, I was only in about 10 feet of water. In a pool. Without sharks. But still. Did you know that Southern Indiana has a large contingent of scuba enthusiasts? I did not know this until I met and chatted with Casey Vallee, a dive instructor with Southern Indiana Scuba. Her enthusiasm for scuba is infectious and her patience for our nonsensical fish phobias was endless. Think you might be interested in seeing what scuba is all about? Be sure the listen to the very end of the episode - it might be worth it $$!

We also throwback to episode 22 with our friends at Class 101. They shared with us all we need to know about preparing our students for college, from test prep to writing the best essay (perhaps about the fascinating hobby of scuba?). And in our REAL-List segment, condo living can be a great option for some buyers. What makes it different than buying a single family home? Listen to our REAL List to find out!

    Episode 60: Bloomingfoods Co-Op

    Episode 60: Bloomingfoods Co-Op
Local. Is it a trendy word or is it truly a vital concept? We're voting for vital concept. Local businesses and business people have an intimate knowledge of our community needs. As Liam Neeson would say, "a very particular set of skills" that can only be "acquired over a very long career." What does that have to do with this episode's guest? Is it Liam Neeson? Not quite. But we talk with two of the general managers of our local food market juggernaut, Bloomingfoods Co-Op, Dee Bohler and Phil Phillipy, to learn more about the co-op's 44 year history ("a very long career"). This 44 year longevity has allowed Bloomingfoods to develop their "particular set of skills" that non-local businesses just can't match, that of keeping their shelves stocked with exactly what Bloomingtonians are looking for. We also chat about the community programs they have in place and what exactly is a co-op. (Hint: You do not have to be a member to shop there. There is no secret password! Bloomingfoods is open to all!)

In our throwback, we revisit Episode 5 of At Home in Bloomington with the Bloomington Salt Cave. Did you know that if you have a Bloomingfoods membership, you can also get a discount at the Salt Cave? And in our REAL-List segment, Never negotiated the purchase of a home before? No worries, we’ve got you covered as Deb shares what items, besides price, can be negotiated in a purchase agreement.

    Episode 59: Whole Sun Designs

    Episode 59: Whole Sun Designs
Today’s show is about magic. Not the pull a rabbit out of a hat or guess my card magic. Real magic. Turning silent sunshine into music and hot beams into freezing cold AC. The magic of solar power. We welcome Ryan Zaricki, owner of Whole Sun Designs to talk about the process of integrating solar power into your home and all the benefits that come along with it (and how to make the most of those benefits). This show is about what a homeowner needs to know about solar. We don't get too deeply into the science of solar. Because we'd prefer to just consider it magic!

In our Facebook Follow segment, check out Bloomington Co-Housing on Facebook. A guest on At Home In Bloomington's Episode 16, developer Loren Wood (also a supporter of Sycamore Land Trust), talks about the newest community being built in Bloomington and how it's not what you think it is! Episode 58: Meadowood

    Episode 58: Meadowood
At Home in Bloomington is about finding community. And that's literally what this episode is about. Community. And it's one of Deb's most favorite places on earth. If you’ve heard her talk, then you’ve probably heard her talk about it. No, it’s not Disneyworld. But we kind of love it for the same reason. The people there are always so happy and having fun. We're talking about Meadowood, a senior living community., but really a center of community for Bloomington. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Kathy Norris and Sandra McGow about what Meadowood is and has to offer as a senior living community, But we also talk what Meadowood has to offer to the entire community. You will be blown away by the free events that are available there on an almost daily basis. So whether you are planning for your future or just looking for a new way to explore today, Meadowood is a wonderful community resource.

In our throwback episode, we revisit At Home in Bloomington guests Paige Freitag and Erin Martoglio from episode 36. We met them at a presentation at Meadowood and learned so much about estate planning that we knew we had to share with our listeners. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb presents a few of her 10 Commandments for sellers. Planning on selling? Plan on listening to this!

    Episode 57: Bloomington Volunteer Network

    Episode 57: Bloomington Volunteer Network
Are you new to the community? Or maybe just want to make more friends? Today's show is a two-fer. Because you can meet people and make friends while making a difference. Volunteers are vital to so many organizations in Bloomington. And we are lucky enough to have a city government that recognizes that. In fact, in 1980, when then Mayor Frank McCloskey established the Bloomington Volunteer Action Center, it was only the 2nd center of its kind in the country (the first being New York City). So the belief in the value of Volunteering runs deep in Bloomington. How can you get involved? What are the requirements? How can you get your kids or entire family involved? We discuss these questions, along with how non-profits can take advantage of this resource, with the Director of the Bloomington Volunteer Network on this episode. Tune in and make a difference!

Also, we throwback to At Home in Bloomington, Episode 29 with Cheryl Smith of Consider it Done Transition Services. Learn how to declutter and put some of your unneeded items to good use with local non-profits. And in our REAL-List segment, learn about a popular technique buyers use to reduce the money out of pocket at closing! Sounds like a good deal!

Episode 56: Monroe County History Club

Episode 56: Monroe County History Club
History isn't so much about remembering "the Good Old days." If you really study and contemplate, you'll often gain a greater appreciation for today! (Never a bad thing to increase our gratitude, I think!) One of the best (and FREE) ways to connect with our local history is through the Monroe County History Club. On this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Michael Carter about the origins of the club, what's involved to be a member (nothing but showing up and maybe eating lunch!), how you can catch up on presentations you've missed and what the future holds for remembering the past.

We also throwback to At Home in Bloomington Episode 33, the Monroe County History Center. The opportunities with the History Center often go hand in hand with the History Club, though they are two separate entities. But like many groups and organizations in Bloomington, they see the value in collaborating and supporting each other. And in our REAL-List segment, we give you a high level overview of how a lender comes up with how much house you can afford. No calculators needed!

    Episode 55: Growing Opportunities

    Episode 55: Growing Opportunities
Collaboration, cooperation and innovation. Probably things our world could use more of and that's why we love this guest so much! Growing Opportunities collaborates with local businesses, cooperates with other non profits and is constantly working on innovative ways to hydroponically grow fresh produce year around. In a parking lot off East 10th Street. There's a double story here of fresh greens, grown in controlled and chemical free environment where only gloved hands touch the plant from seed to consumer. But there's also a story of jobs training for clients who want to work and confidence building along the way. Tons of greens being grown in a tiny footprint with a fraction of the soil, water and resources typically needed? Or building up a enthusiastic, skilled and reliable population of workers that are sorely needed in our area? Which is the bigger story? Trick question. They both are! Listen to our conversation with Errin Logsdon, Program Manager of Growing Opportunities and be inspired!

We also throwback to At Home in Bloomington Episode 18, Goldleaf Hydroponics. They are a huge supporter of Growing Opportunities. Congratulations to them on their new location, too! And in our REAL-List segment, we give you a realistic preview of what life is like as a Realtor, for those aspiring to the profession.

    Episode 54: Historic Tivoli Theatre

    Episode 54: Historic Tivoli Theatre
We did the math. It's not that far. Think about it this way, if you lived in Greenwood (Indiana), you'd probably not hesitate to drive to downtown Indianapolis to do something, right? This is the same distance. What are we talking about? Driving to Spencer, Indiana (just west of Bloomington a few miles) to check out one of their special places (and save money, too!). Spencer is home to the Historic Tivoli Theatre and in this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Andrea and Rob White (and baby Charlotte) and Jane Rubeck, all integral members of the Tivoli community, helping keep the history alive while creating a community gathering place featuring theater, music and $5 first run movies. $5? Really! And only $3 for a soda and popcorn! (and free movies on Thursday nights). And so much more! Not to mention a great restoration story full of bird infestations, massive foundation replacement, maybe some ghosts and replicating the stars in the sky in 1928 Check it out!

While you are thinking about Owen County, tune into our throwback episode, #45 with Uplands PEAK Sanctuary. Episode 53: One World Enterprises

    Episode 53: One World Enterprises
Big 10 Bargain. If you don't know what that is, can you really call yourself a Bloomingtonian? We still love you, but you need to get on board with this iconic deal. Yes, I'm talking about pizza, but so much more. Jeff Mease, Godfather of the Bloomington pizza scene and co-owner of One World Enterprises, the parent company of beloved Pizza X, Lennie's, Bloomington Brewing Company, Woolery Mill, Hive, and the One World Kitchen Share, joins us on this episode. We talk their history, his favorite under appreciated pizza (you'll want to hear about this one!) and one of their newest ventures, the One World Kitchen Share, which is opening up opportunities for local food entrepreneurs to fulfill their dreams. Taking just a snippet from their stated Ideals, "Our hearts beat for Bloomington. In everything we do, we aspire to make this extraordinary town an even better place to live." Couldn't have said it better myself.

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 21, where we talk about the DEAL of the CENTURY (rivaling the Big Ten Bargain!) with WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology. And in our REAL-List segment, we open listeners up to the possibility of escaping the tight Monroe County housing market by exploring some neighboring counties. Episode 51: Flashback to Never

    Episode 51: Flashback to Never
We are not the only podcast game in town. We love to share and support other local podcasts. That’s what we are doing on this episode of At Home in Bloomington. And it comes with such an interesting twist. I Flashback to Never is a scripted podcast (which means the complete opposite of what we do since we have no script and barely any notes! We just wing it!) Flashback to never is a radio show about radio. And music. And Bloomington in the 1960’s. But an alternate history telling of a world without Elvis. Confused? Don’t be. Listen to this episode of At Home in Bloomington for a full understanding of what the show is about, but also inspiration for the hard-working crew of David Allen, Brian Johnson, and many, many other super talented people that put this show together. This is yet another episode of people living their passion and working hard to fulfill their dreams.

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 31, Jill's House. We love the connection that Jill's House has made to music helping those dementia and Alzheimer's. We think listening to Flashback To Never might be a highlight for many of these patients! And in our REAL-List segment, we kept the theme of homesteading by flashing back to our REAL Real Estate Today show with Jill and Scott Stowers, the owners of The Wood Frog. We talk about how you can start homesteading, where you are with what you have, even if it's not a large piece of land.

    Episode 50: The Beaumont House

    Episode 50: The Beaumont House
This is a show near and dear to Deb's heart for a couple reasons. First, it's the 50th Episode of At Home in Bloomington! Whew! That's a lot. Between listening to the shows and then visiting all our guests, you shouldn't be bored for years! The second reason Deb is loving on this episode so much is that she worked with Bloomington Restorations Inc for many years to find the right buyer for this property to turn it into something amazing. The Beaumont House has become one of the most stunning transformations in all of Monroe county in the past 15 years (or more) years. We chat with Michelle Cardwell, who along with her husband Darrin, bought, restored and brought to life the Beaumont House. Now a Bed and Breakfast, wedding venue and a growing event center, you'll want to be sure to check out their website, facebook and instagram to see the before and after pics. Episode 49: Muddy Fork Bakery

    Episode 49: Muddy Fork Bakery
How do the French say that something is dreadfully long? They say it's like "un jour sans pain," like a day without bread (pain doesn't mean pain, it means bread). And if you're going to make or eat bread, make it darn good bread. We're here to give you a hot tip! Did you know that Bloomington is home to Indiana's only wood-fired brick-oven bakery? Every Saturday, Muddy Fork Bakery loads up a truck of beautiful loaves and croissants made with organic grains, including wheat, rye, kamut and spelt. These warm loaves then get to the consumer via either local grocer, Bloomingfoods or at the Bloomington Farmers Market. We chat with co-owner Katie Zukof about the weekly rhythm of baking breads and granola in a wood fired oven, as well as the offering of classes to teach you the art of bread making. We also learn how the desire to have a sustainable, family business and years of hard work led them to create Muddy Fork Bakery. It's another inspiring and satisfying (in your tummy) episode! Don't skip At Home in Bloomington. It will make your day feel like 'un jour sans pain.'

Also, we throw back, way back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 1, Switchyard Park. By the time you read this, Switchyard Park has been opened! While there is still a lot of work ahead, one of the first uses of the park will be the Winter Farmer's Market starting in December 2019. Today's guest, Muddy Fork Bakery will be there. Will you? (Yes, it's indoors!) And in our REAL-List segment, stressed out by your credit score? We offers some tips on the best resources to turn to for straightening out credit woes.

Episode 48: Oliver Winery and Vineyards

Episode 48: Oliver Winery and Vineyards
As we've discovered on previous episodes of At Home in Bloomington, some of the best ideas start in a garage or barn. Oliver Winery began as a backyard hobby of Indiana University law professor William Oliver and as most good ideas do, quickly outgrew the barn (sound familiar, Switchyard Brewery?). Professor Oliver was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for the creation of small wineries in Indiana and opened the door for breweries and wineries to sell and serve their craft beverages on site. The Indiana Small Winery Act passed in 1971, and Oliver Winery opened in 1972. Today, Oliver is the state's oldest and largest winery, with over 450,000 cases of wine distributed per year (that's over 1.1 million gallons of wine). On this episode, we're joined by Assistant Events Manager, Dee Peters, and Tasting Room Sales Manager, Ben Smith. We learn that you don't need to know squat about wine to enjoy a tasting at their beautiful winery and that their Creekbend Crimson Cabernet is a delicious treat for a Thursday afternoon! We are doing our part to make a dent in the 1.1 million gallons. So grab a glass and join us!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 37, Dillman Farm. Another local gem that started in a garage. Head over to Oliver Winery, grab a bottle of wine and some Dillman Farm snacks (you can buy them at Oliver!). You can hang out right there, enjoy the gorgeous property and locally produced snacks and libations! And in our REAL-List segment, home inspections aren't required and there's no pass or fail. So what role does a home inspection play in the home buying/selling process? Listen and find out.

Episode 47: Getting Involved in Local Government with Susan Sandberg

Episode 47: Getting Involved in Local Government with Susan Sandberg
Are you like Deb and get your political aspirations from the movie, "Legally Blonde?" Don't judge! That movie is chock full of sound advice. From animal rights to Elle Woods telling Congress to "Speak up! Use your voice!" This is YOUR community. There's a difference between being a part of the community and just living in it. This episode of At Home in Bloomington encourages you to be an active part and a voice of the community, rather than just a bystander. Everyone can be involved. And everyone's voice deserves to be heard. (Elle Woods said so!) In this episode, we talk with Susan Sandberg, who has served our community as an at-large council member on the Bloomington City Council since 2007. Did you know our city council relies on active, passionate people to let them know what’s important to them? Everything they vote on has a public comment so you can let your voice be heard. And there are tons of vacancies on boards and commissions, just looking for citizens to lend their voice. Learn more about getting involved in local government, whether it's just attending city council meetings or serving on an advisory committee, on episode 47 of At Home in Bloomington, because, as Elle Woods says, "If we lose our voice...well then this country is in for a really bad haircut."

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 15, the Monroe County Extension office. An important resource for making your life better in Monroe County. One of the resources they offer is an educational program called Citizens' Academy where Monroe County residents can get a behind the scenes look at county government. And it's free! And in our REAL-List segment, Deb talks about what to expect from your realtor when your home is listed for sale and how the seller plays a vital role in a successful sale.

    Episode 45: Uplands PEAK Sanctuary

    Episode 45: Uplands PEAK Sanctuary
What's your passion? What's your dream? We are always impressed and inspired when we find someone who seemingly "threw it all away" only to make their passion a reality. For Michelle Pruitt, reading a book by the founder of Farm Sanctuary changed her life forever and put her on the path to making her passion a reality. Michelle immediately went vegan, but wanted to do more to help abused and neglected farmed animals. Michelle and her husband Mark opened the barn doors to Uplands PEAK (People, Earth, and Animals in Kinship) in 2013 with their first residents, Andy and Annie, two brave piglets who escaped a backyard butcher and ran for their lives. A move to the appropriately named town of Freedom, Indiana in 2018 is now where Michelle and Mark along with twelve formerly farmed pigs, six goats, twelve roosters, five cows and two turkeys, make their home. Uplands PEAK is Indiana's 1st Farmed Animal Sanctuary and offers 105+ acres of refuge for animals and people. Uplands PEAK also offers an eco-friendly cabin for its members and other visitors, and the main house on the property is home to a gift shop, education center, and community lounge. The visiting program offers educational tours to meet their rescued residents and introduce people to the realities of animal agriculture. Please enjoy our chat with this growing sanctuary dedicated to the lifelong care and liberation of formerly farmed animals. And be inspired to make your passion a reality, too!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 9, Hopscotch Coffee (and parent company of Rainbow Bakery featuring all Vegan baked goods). Honor today's guest and take one for the team and try out veganism by diving into a Rainbow Bakery cupcake or doughnut. I dare you. And in our REAL-List segment, debunks a popular myth about mortgages - that you should avoid lenders who sell your mortgage after closing.

Episode 44: NR Hiller Design, Inc,

Episode 44: NR Hiller Design, Inc,
In certain circles, this week's guest is considered a rock star. While she humbly disagrees, we're impressed with the fact that this author, teacher, artist, scholar and woodworker has chosen Bloomington as her home. Since 1995, Nancy Hiller has taught cabinetmaking, furniture, and finishing courses, authored five books and run NR Hiller Design, a one woman design and build operation. We talk to Nancy about how a woodworking course taken out of spite led her down the path to what would become her life's work and how being a homeowner provided comfort and satisfaction to her as a single woman.

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 24, in honor of women doing what they want to do! Scouts BSA Troop 1148 has been lighting up the scouting scene and providing opportunities for girls to camp, hike, make and learn outside and in the community in a way mostly only boys had done in the past. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb shares the realities of a home remodeling project.

    Episode 43: WFHB

    Episode 43: WFHB
What exemplifies the word "community" more than a volunteer run, listener supported radio station whose mission is to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas and issues, and to celebrate and increase the local cultural diversity? We can't think of anything better than WFHB! Discussions for a community radio station started in 1975 and aired 18 years later, with the Herman Wells' gong being the first broadcast sound. (Because doesn't every univesity president need a gong to preside with? We think so.) Today, WFHB is run by over 100 volunteers who do everything from write the daily local news to host shows like Saturday's Child, the station's longest running program. This weekly performance is broadcast live from the Monroe County History Center and is free to attend (with free coffee and bagels!!). Saturday's Child is just one of many shows you can hear on WFHB. Join us as we talk with Emily Jackson (better known as DJ EJ) about Bloomington's own volunteer powered, listener supported, community radio station, WFHB!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 41 (not too far of a throw), when we spoke with Michael White of Community Access Television Services, or CATS. Another community station, in the television world, they are also great partners with WFHB in providing local information like no one else in the community. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb gives us a pep talk and helpful advice on what to do if you get turned down for a mortgage.
