    About this Episode

Instead of just looking at one specific location in Baltimore, we’re going to be getting a run-down of the three largest art museums in the city.

As the summer season begins kicking off, there is nowhere better to hang out on those sweltering days than in a museum! This is a cost-effective activity that is educational, interesting, and oh-so leisurely!

The reason I wanted to put these three art museums in the same episode, at least for now, is so that I could really stress the differences between them. So if, for instance, you happened to hit one of these museums and it wasn’t quite your speed, you have a better idea of where to look next. Or, perhaps more importantly, I’d love to stress the value that each of the different museums brings to the art and culture of Baltimore.

So buckle up, friends. We’re heading The Walters Art Museum, The Baltimore Museum of Art, and The American Visionary Arts Museum!

Episode 4: Vote Against Prohibition Mural

Episode 4: Vote Against Prohibition Mural

Hello, and welcome back to The Evermore Podcast: An Exploration of Baltimore’s Art, History, and Forgotten Lore.

This week, we’re visiting a mural whose artist is also a mystery… but its message is loud and clear!

I can’t remember exactly why I was in the city the day that I noticed the ghostly “Vote Against Prohibition” mural on the side of a brick building in Fell’s Point. I imagine I was sitting at a red light and quickly stopped to snap a picture.

Today, I have summoned the image forward, and we will be heading back to the 1920s to get a better understanding of what prohibition meant for Baltimore and, in particular, what it meant for The Joseph Kavanagh Company and its family. Theirs is a family business that has been weathering the storms of the city since 1886, and perhaps one of their most interesting storms was that of the Prohibition Era. Fortunately, the reigning Joseph Kavanagh agreed to share his story with us today!

So come join us! We’ll be talking about prohibition and the city of Baltimore during the 1920s, how a family of metal-workers became bootleggers to keep their family and business afloat and remind you about the time the government wasn’t held responsible for poisoning and killing 10,000 people.

Episode 3: The Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythias

Episode 3: The Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pythias

Welcome back to the third episode of The Evermore Podcast: An Exploration of Baltimore’s Art, History, and Forgotten Lore.

So far we’ve visited Poe’s Grave and the Ouija board 7-11, but today we are going to be keeping things closer to the vest for me and going on about the building that brought me to Baltimore in the first place!

It is a building that is guarded by dragons, disguised as a bank, and it sits at the edge of a rainbow. Incidentally, it’s also where I am earning my degree (which is not, unfortunately, in Witchcraft and Wizardry.)

In this episode, we’re going to be taking a walkthrough of what is currently the Liberal Arts and Policy building at the University of Baltimore. But don’t be fooled…the same building was once home to a secret society of knights.

On our tour, we’ll explore hints of the past that’s left behind, learn more about this “secret society,” and then explore some of the more modern, artistic elements that the university has added.

Was the university’s Liberal Arts and Policy building once the home of a good ‘ol boys club, or was it something a bit more… scandalous? Let’s go find out!

Earth Day Special: Mr. Trash Wheel

Earth Day Special: Mr. Trash Wheel

This Earth Day special of The Evermore Podcast explores the history that Baltimore City has with the Inner Harbor.

It was only a decade ago that the pollution problem had become so tragic that the thought of the city enjoying a recreational waterfront seemed impossible. Since that time, John Kellett, a local engineer who worked on the waterfront, has come up with a solution!

With the help of the Waterfront Partnership in Baltimore now has a fleet of anthropomorphic googly-eyed heroes that act as the last line of defense against pollution in the inner harbor. They've become so effective at cleaning up our local water that soon, we may be able to enjoy our inner harbor in new and exciting ways.

In this special episode, our host, Serena Brontide, speaks with Chelsea Anspach, the environmental communications manager for the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, about their Healthy Harbor Initiative and what is probably their most famous part of that initiative, Mr. Trash Wheel.

In this interview, they discuss the importance of the inner harbor to Baltimore City, the secret society that pays tribute to the trash wheels, the weird things that have been pulled out of the harbor, and how anyone around the world can help!

Don't forget to check out the corresponding blog for the Earth Day Special to see photos of our waterfront friends!

Episode 2: Baltimore's History with the Ouija Board

Episode 2: Baltimore's History with the Ouija Board

The city of Baltimore has many feathers in its hat as far as history and innovation go. One of the most confounding, however, is that of the Ouija board.

You might know the Ouija board as a slumber party game, a way to summon demons, or simply a way to give your dead relatives a quick "howdy doo," but no matter how you know it, the reason you do is thanks to a man named Elijah Bond- the man who held a marketing meeting with ghosts and made his fortune.

In the second episode of the Evermore Podcast, we'll be exploring the seriously strange history of Ouija boards while sipping on a Slurpee because, oh nelly... we're heading to a 7-11.
