Local Government Arts Funding Crisis (with Stephanie Sirr, Zak Mensah and Cllr Liz Green)

The country-wide economic squeeze has hit the arts and culture sector hard. Local governments -  under pressure to save money - are making cuts to their support for local arts organisations, sometimes removing funding completely.

Why are we in this situation and what can be done to make positive progress?

Host Tom Dawson is joined by three expert guests to understand the context and try to come up with some answers:

Stephanie Sirr - CEO of Nottingham Playhouse and  Co-President of UK Theatre

Zak Mensah - Co-CEO of Birmingham Museums Trust and a Trustee of Cultural Enterprises

Cllr Liz Green - Chair of the Local Government Association's Culture, Tourism and Sport board and Councillor, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames

Starting From Scratch (with Amy Akino-Wittering at Young V&A)

Young V&A is a museum for children and young people. It's located on the site of the former Museum of Childhood but re-launched  under a new brand and with a complete re-imagining in July 2023.

Amy Akino-Wittering (Head of Operations and Commercial at Young V&A) runs the day-to-day operation of the museum and played a key leadership role in its planning, design and launch. In this episode she shares with host Tom Dawson her learnings of "starting from scratch" with a new museum concept, plus gives insights from her career in the arts and culture sector.

There are really useful lessons here in prioritisation and vision - when you start with nothing but a blank page, what are the pillars that you build around? Amy also gives great direction in the crucial area of team management - how do you create the best platform for your staff to shine and, in turn, provide a great experience for visitors?

Children and young people are a notoriously hard audience to really serve well - it's easy to miss the mark. Amy gives great advice about observing and adapting. Plus, Amy's passion for constant improvement (through gathering feedback from the team members on the floor) really shines through.

Wildlife series: Part 6 - The fascinating lives of pugees (trackers) who count and save our lions

Forest trackers also called 'pugees' play an inimitable role in conserving India's forests. They can reconstruct whole events inside forests just by looking at the pugmarks. Listen to the full episode to find out how. The pugees play a crucial role in monitoring the health of wildlife and getting medical support as quickly as possible.

This is a continuation of the previous episode (part 5) and our sprightly young co-host Chandrika joins us in this episode as well.

    Who we are

Block Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.

We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.

    Ground-level coverage

Our neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this  ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a  neighborhood.

Stories that matter to you — every day

Since our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans.

We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them.

Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Ballet is Good Business: The Arts & Economic Development

What does ballet have to do with big business? That’s the question Buzz4Good creator Michael Hemphill asks in our exploration of the role the Arts play in stimulating a city’s economic development efforts.

He talks to Mike Friedlander who leads the Fralin Biomedical Research Intstitue at Virginia Tech; Olivia King, manager of Mast General in downtown Roanoke; Roanoke economic development director Marc Nelson, and many others on today’s show.

And we preview the work we’ve been doing on our TV show BUZZ, in partnership with the Roanoke Cultural Endowment, to provide economic development leaders more  resources to better market Roanoke’s burgeoning arts scene to potential developers and employers.

Mayor Christopher Taylor and the Risks and Rewards of Leading a Local Government | Season 2 Episode 7

Mayor Christopher Taylor and the Risks and Rewards of Leading a Local Government | Season 2 Episode 7

Leading a city is a largely thankless job, where strangers get to insult you in public. So if you’re not excited about actually governing, this isn’t for you. Christopher Taylor is a successful lawyer, but has served as Ann Arbor’s mayor since 2014 – for peanuts – and he loves it. “In a democracy, collaboration is the key. You simply have to get buy-in. So when we make a decision, a lot of smart people have given it a lot more thought than you’d think!” He even sings in this interview – and he’s good!

Bonus Episode -Saskatoon Fringe Festival Preview

Bonus Episode -Saskatoon Fringe Festival Preview

Anita Smith is one of my favourite people and it was wonderful to have her back on the podcast for this special summer bonus episode.

Anita is the Artistic and Executive Director of Saskatoon's 25th Street Theatre and a fierce advocate for the arts in our community. When she's not directing and acting in plays, Anita empowers local artists from all backgrounds to tell their stories on local stages. That's one of the many reasons why she is so excited for the Saskatoon Fringe Festival.

25th Street Theatre puts on the Fringe Festival which means Anita and her team are busy all year preparing for the 10 day festival in Saskatoon's Broadway District. This year's festival  features the return of international theatre companies to Saskatoon as well as some fantastic local and national companies.

Anita was kind enough to swing by my house on a Sunday morning to offer a preview of this year's Fringe Festival for the podcast. We also discuss the importance of getting kids interested in the arts at a young age and why she feels so strongly about our community supporting local artists.

You can learn more about this year's Fringe Festival and purchase tickets to any of the festival performances by visiting the 25th Street Theatre website

I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer and don't forget that Season 5 of YXE Underground drops on September 8th! I have started gathering interviews for the new season and can't wait to share them with you!!

Thank you, as always, for supporting a local, independent podcast. I really do appreciate it. Have a great rest of your summer and maybe see you at the Fringe!
