In today’s episode, Yves has beef with jokes about Black people running away from danger in horror movies. But the best stories have dramatic reversals, and even the most stubborn minds can be changed. Katie and Yves get into the complexity of the well-intentioned jokes and speak with Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, a horror expert who isn’t afraid to look in the mirror and say “Candyman” five times.

Langston and David use this mini episode to dive into the conspiracies of Black films. They kick off with Diary of a Mad Black Woman and explore the "Black Girl Magic" of it all. Lots of questions arise around Tyler Perry. Is he trying to destroy the Black communities with his movies? Did he get the right film permits? Most importantly, did Shemar Moore keep that wig on the whole time?

Happy Wine Wednesday! We are back with the second edition of our "Does It Hold Up" series in which we explore classic movies from the past and discuss whether or not they hold up under a modern lens. In this episode, we discuss Coming to America - the original - not to be confused with the sequel. We take a trip down memory lane and discuss what we loved about the hilarious Eddie Murphy film. We also examine what themes from the film still ring true today. Unfortunately, dating has not improved since the film premiered in 1988. We also revisit our discussion on the sequel in the context of watching the original film. Finally, we render our ruling - does Coming to America still hold up? Listen and find out!

This special podcast (Monday, June 1, 2020) looks at the protests and unrest over the past week in the United States. The actions stem from the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by a white officer in Minneapolis.
The podcast delves into the meaning and underlying causes of the protest and unrest, which go beyond Floyd's death. Quotes (see podcast Twitter) from black leaders are presented for reflection while songs and films are suggested to deal with the ongoing issue of police brutality and other injustices plaguing our society and in particular the African American community.

Closing out our first month of divos ever with my personal favorite of favorites: Mr. Michael Jackson. This week, Angie & Steffi are easing down the road and talking about The Wiz (1978). Our aforementioned divo of the week is Michael Jackson and our diva of the week (opening & closing divo’s month with 1 divo and 1 diva) is Ms. Diana Ross.
LOGLINE: The Wiz is a movie musical adaptation of the 1974 Broadway musical “The Wiz” & reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” that features an all Black cast. It follows the adventure of Dorothy, a 24 year old school teacher who magically gets transported to the Land of Oz. She befriends a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion on her quest to meet the Wiz - who may be the only being powerful enough to send her home.

No, my first name ain’t baby...nor is it Miss Jackson (if ya nasty). This week, Steffi is once again joined by first time returning guest co-host, Angie, to talk about Janet Jackson AND our first DIVO Tupac Shakur in John Singleton’s “Poetic Justice” (1993).
LOGLINE: A romantic drama centered on Justice, a hairdresser who is still dealing with the violent death of her boyfriend and finds comfort in writing poetry. She accompanies her friend Iesha on a road trip from South Central LA to Oakland with her boyfriend & his friend. The film is really a character study on how the inner city violence was affecting young, African American adults during this time.
