Here’s the hypothetical: imagine a world where only one Canadian artist has ever gained international attention and renown. Just one. Who would you want that artist to be?

This question comes from our most recent episode about Shakira's Dónde Están los Ladrones? - Shakira is Colombia's most famous musician and, as a result, the face of Colombian music to the world. They could do worse - she's incredible.

    Jason Haywood - Canadian Singer-Songwriter

    Jason Haywood - Canadian Singer-Songwriter

In this Episode of A Chat with Heart Canadian singer-songwriter Jason Haywood - member of acclaimed outlaw country band The Divorcees in addition to his award-winning solo work - chats with Christina about his musical background, songwriting and being an independent artist.

Jason also shares his future plans with Matt Gillis, and the duo's desire to embrace the folk-inspired sounds of the influential Laurel Canyon scene, breaking from the blueprint of their respective musical histories to create something unique. The idea for the project stemmed from a discussion the pair had over a campfire one evening, when they engaged in a prolonged discussion about the works of artists like Neil Young, The Byrds, The Doors and others.

“I'd say the collaborative nature of the Laurel Canyon scene is what resonated with both Matt and I, and informed our approach to this project,” Haywood says. “Even at the height of the Laurel Canyon scene back in the 60’s, musicians would finish writing a song, then go knock on another musician's door to play it for them. It was extremely collaborative. There was a wide range of styles and talent present in that scene but it was the innovation and fearlessness of the songwriters that inspired us a lot. They helped serve as a jumping off point as we both love the music of this era. I don't think we are trying to copy it, it's more that we are paying homage to an iconic era in music by writing the finest songs we can.”
