About this Episode

Eretta learned the importance of giving back at an early age. She grew up in a family full of Veterans, from her father who was a well-known cowboy and Army veteran, to her older brother, as well a her husband, A Vet's Choice Co-Founder, Harold O. Perry.

She later devoted 20 years of her life to teaching and then became a Real Estate Consultant, an Entrepreneur and a Philanthropist. Her upbringing and compassion for people never departed from her.

Twenty eight percent of Greater Houston's homeless population are veterans (approximately 3,600). 5-10% of Houston's homeless are women veterans. About 45% of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness. With a special affinity towards helping our veterans, Eretta and her husband have always prayed to be part of the answer to these problems.

Being part of the answer is what led her to found Love And Hope For Our Heroes, an organization focused on creating stable, vibrant and healthy communities by providing affordable, service-led housing. We serve people with special needs with the full spectrum of affordable housing, including elder care, mental health, VA housing, halfway homes, assisted living, sober homes and much more.

Dash Gordon - Timothy Glover

'Dash Gordon' became a League City celebrity with his joyful DoorDash deliveries. Now he's opening a charity.

Timothy Glover oversees his own nonprofit foundation. The Dash Gordon Foundation is the capstone of his mission: spreading cheer and goodwill among the citizens of League City.

Or rather the career capstone of his "superhero" alter ego, Dash Gordon.

Glover, a father of eight, has been working in the car industry for about 30 years. In an unfortunate turn of events last year, his wife had a health scare. In need of extra money, he signed on with food delivery service DoorDash. But months after doing so, he became frustrated — no one opened their front doors to receive deliveries.

"I needed to create an experience. So I created a persona: Dash Gordon," said Glover, 57, of his spin on the character Flash Gordon. "People got a kick out of it and they started thanking me."

At the end of April 2022, he convinced his wife to buy a Flash costume. On his first night out in costume, he created quite a commotion: "Restaurant managers were like, 'You gotta go.' All the talk on League City social media was like, there’s this guy dressed in a Flash costume..."

Missing Pieces Support Group - Jamilah Robinson

Jamilah Robinson is a serial entrepreneur and owner of J Robinson Digital Media Services LLC, a social media management firm that focuses on helping non-profit organizations . She is also a managing member, serving as President for Affinity Weddings TV, a local company that produces wedding reality TV, and, is the founder and Executive Director of the Missing Pieces Support Group Texas, a non-profit that brings awareness to pregnancy loss awareness and serves the community through care packages for families who encounter baby loss. "I enjoy being an entrepreneur and the different roles I play amongst these entities," said Jamilah. They all encompass the ultimate goal of meeting other people’s needs, and I truly believe that helping others is God's purpose for my life."

After returning home from frontline combat service with the Marines in the Middle East, Scotti took time off to reflect, and heal, through writing new music. He now embarks on a soul-searching road to redemption through rock and roll. I'm a family man with a very active 15 year old son that keeps me on my toes... Local elite soccer team, rostered to 2 teams, and plays for his school soccer team Percussionist in school band MMA Black Belt An "A" student I'm currently working as a Fire Protection Systems Designer, and have been with my current company just over 9 years now. Although I have my associate drafting degree, I've went back to college as an adult and received my Bachelors degree from UofH Clear Lake, where I dual majored in business and marketing.

Sergeant Records has 3 original Veteran artists lined up, Scotti included, as well as sponsoring a toy drive that will benefit Veteran families this Christmas. We're also selling Christmas cards to provide the patrons an opportunity to send a message to those currently deployed overseas, and the money collected for that will allow Sergeant Records to mail those out to a unit or two this Christmas.

Helen Stagg is Chief Executive Officer of Civic Heart Community Services, a community based social service organization in Houston, Texas. Civic Heart is one of the largest Black-founded, Black-led organizations in the Greater Gulf Coast Region of Texas. As CEO, Stagg is responsible for operational planning and management, program operations and oversight, addressing strategic organizational issues, human resources planning and management, financial planning, and management, fundraising and grant writing and community relations/advocacy.

Civic heart’s mission is to help "people empower themselves," and to this end, the organization is making a difference to the 65,000 clients it serves annually. Lisa Kurrass founded the Real Estate Connection International as a Property Management Firm in 1990 in Houston, Texas and has been managing and selling properties since then in the Houston, Texas area and her business spans worldwide. In 2015, Lisa developed a huge presence in Costa Rica.

With a reputation for trust, integrity, and professionalism, Lisa has become one of the foremost international real estate brokers worldwide. Her sphere of influence in exposing opportunity spans the globe with some of the most highly respected real estate practitioners globally. She has been hosted by leaders of nations, ambassadors and has been written up in MSNBC, Fox News, and Reuters.

Her company grew to 14 with 10 agents including her as the broker. They work for the Lord first and transact property after. Real Estate is what they do, Christians is who they are. They are Kingdom Agents.

Once she completed her term as FIABCI World President, she returned to private life here in Houston to raise her children. Today, she enjoys her clients, her business, her family and her church. Lisa married Robert Kurrass in 1997 and they have two boys. Brandon served in the United States Navy and Christopher served in the United States Marine Corps.

Lisa is now Board Co-Chair to Relief Network Ministries, Inc. which she will share about today. They drill water wells in West Africa and India, totaling over 1200 today of new or rehabilitated wells. This brings clean water to drink, cook and bathe within a mile. They no longer have contaminated and unsanitary water that makes everyone ill and die. Then they share the living water, which is the Gospel.

I’m a veteran of both Afghanistan and Iraq. I was both a Cav Scout and an Infantryman. Nowadays, I’m a husband, a father, and I suppose a lot of people just call me a cowboy. But in the 13 years between leaving the military and becoming a father, I experienced much of what many of our peers have been facing since separation.

We all know at least one veteran who has failed to thrive in the civilian world.
We've all seen the rising suicide rates, with many of us losing close friends along the way.

And if it's not that, it's guys living as dangerously as they can until they leave the world on their own terms. Funerals for so many friends along the way. And it's a wonder many of us are still here.

I bore witness to veterans making it big, achieving huge successes in their fields, while others couldn't figure out which way to turn on a circular track.
And I've watched, along with everyone else, as the charts that document our homelessness rates pop up and down like an EKG for long enough. It's time for us to start looking out for one another.
