Denn das Gespräch in dieser Episode zwischen DWDL-Chefreporter Thorsten Zarges und der Vice President EMEA bei Meta, Angelika Gifford, fand statt, bevor bekannt wurde, dass Meta 11.000 Mitarbeiter entlässt. Das sind etwa 13 Prozent der kompletten Belegschaft. Die beiden sprachen bei den MEDIENTAGEN MÜNCHEN 2022 miteinander. Nichtsdestotrotz sind Giffords Aussagen interessant. Vielleicht sogar gerade im Wissen um die schwierige Lage beim Facebook Mutterkonzern. Ein schwieriger Werbemarkt wegen Inflation und diverser Krisen, weniger Kaufkraft bei den Konsument*innen, der nachlassende Digitalisierungsschub nach dem Hoch in der Pandemie, Konkurrenz durch TikTok – all das führt dazu, dass es sogar im Silicon Valley nicht mehr nur steil bergauf geht. Trotzdem bleiben die großen Pläne von Marc Zuckerberg für das Metaverse natürlich bestehen. Angelika Gifford spricht über die Strategie von Meta und versucht den Vorwurf zu entkräften, ihr Konzern errichte beim Metaverse eine Art Monopol. Außerdem gibt sie Einblicke in ihr Buch „Die Digitale Dekade: Wie wir unsere Wirtschaft transformieren können“, in dem sie die Sorge ausdrückt, dass der Digitalstandort Deutschland immer weiter abgehängt wird und eine Art „Faxrepublik“ zurück bleibt.
