February 15th, 2023. Can Your Electric Vehicle Be Hacked, Crashed, and Held for Ransom?

    enFebruary 15, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Mother's Day Shopping and EV Industry NewsWholes Foods offers savings on gifts, flowers, and desserts for Mother's Day. Ford halts production of F-150 Lightning due to battery issue. Ethical concerns and hacking risks in EV industry. New Arizona governor continues busing illegal migrants. Coffee may aid mind-body healing.

Whole Foods Market is an ideal destination for Mother's Day shopping, offering unparalleled savings on premium gifts, flowers, and desserts. Prime members can save 33% on body care and candles, purchase a 15 stem bunch of tulips for $9.99, and complete mom's menu with special treats. Meanwhile, in the news, Ford Motor Company has halted production of their electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, due to a battery issue. The electric vehicle industry relies heavily on cobalt, primarily sourced from the Congo, where up to a third of it is mined by children. Ford's battery problem and the ethical concerns surrounding cobalt mining are significant issues in the EV industry. Additionally, cyber experts warn of the risks of electric cars being hacked and held for ransom, and the new Democrat governor of Arizona plans to continue busing illegal migrants around the country, causing controversy among her fellow Democrats. Lastly, a recent study suggests that coffee may aid the mind's ability to heal the body.

    • Indonesia's Role in Producing 'Dirty Green' Minerals for BatteriesIndonesia is the world's second largest producer of cobalt, a key component in batteries, and the government is trying to control production and profits. However, Chinese companies dominate the supply chain, leaving the US out of the loop.

Indonesia has become the world's second largest producer of cobalt, making it a major player in the production of "dirty green" minerals for batteries. This development is significant because Indonesia is already a major supplier of other minerals like copper and nickel, and the government is trying to create a nickel cartel to control production and profits. However, Chinese companies are the ones making the announcements for new and expanding mines, and they control the refineries and battery factories as well. This means that the supply chain for these dirty green batteries remains outside of the US. Another concerning issue is the increased risk of electric vehicles getting hacked due to their heavy reliance on electronics and software. With over 3,000 electronic control units in electric vehicles compared to around 150 in traditional cars, there are 3,000 potential ways for hackers to gain access. Electric vehicles communicate with charging systems and automakers, often through the Internet, making them vulnerable to cyberattacks.

    • Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure face cybersecurity risksElectric vehicles are susceptible to cyber attacks, with potential consequences ranging from ransomware to vehicle takeover. Prof. Maddock predicts a major attack will force industry change, while the Biden admin holds closed-door forums on stricter cyber controls.

Electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure are currently vulnerable to cyber attacks, with potential consequences ranging from ransomware attacks to complete vehicle takeover. Professor Stuart Maddock of MIT has warned about the risks of hacking, including erratic vehicle behavior and even fires. The US Energy Department has also issued a warning about the lack of comprehensive cybersecurity approaches in the EV industry. The most likely attack is a ransomware attack, where hackers demand payment to restore vehicle function or threaten to cause damage. The industry's focus on reliability, safety, and ease of use has left security as an afterthought. Professor Maddock predicts a major cyberattack will force change in the industry, much like the wake-up call the computer industry experienced when it was first connected to the internet. The Biden administration has also held a closed-door forum with auto manufacturers and others to discuss stricter cyber controls. Hollywood, too, is under threat from the Chinese Communist Party, with films being altered, funding lost, and actors banned for supporting human rights. It's a reminder that as technology advances, security must be a priority to protect our way of life.

    • Arizona Governor's Approach to Illegal Migrants and Chumba Casino's Daily BonusesArizona Governor Katie Hobbs continues her state's program of transporting illegal migrants, while Chumba Casino provides daily bonuses for free-to-play games. The number of illegal crossings decreased in January, and Hobbs claims a more humane approach, but some Democrats criticize her methods.

Chumba Casino offers free-to-play social casino games with daily bonuses to brighten up your day. Meanwhile, in politics, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs continues her state's program of transporting illegal migrants but claims a more humane approach. The number of illegal crossings decreased in January, partly due to seasonality and the adoption of previous Republican policies. However, some Democrats criticize this approach, comparing it to historical atrocities. Lastly, a study from the University of Sydney in Australia explores the power of the human mind to heal, focusing on helping people overcome coffee withdrawal symptoms.

    • The Placebo Effect and Decaffeinated CoffeeBelieving in a treatment's effectiveness can lead to real symptom improvement, as shown in a study where decaf coffee drinkers reported fewer withdrawal symptoms when they believed they were consuming regular coffee.

The power of the mind in healing or alleviating symptoms, known as the placebo effect, was highlighted in a study involving decaffeinated coffee and coffee withdrawal symptoms. Researchers found that those who believed they were consuming regular coffee, but in reality were drinking decaf, reported fewer withdrawal symptoms. This effect is not limited to coffee and raises questions about its potential application to those addicted to more dangerous substances. However, despite its potential, the placebo effect receives significantly less research funding compared to traditional drugs and therapies, leading some to speculate that financial motivations may be at play. The study underscores the importance of further investigating the placebo effect and its potential benefits for various health conditions.

    • Assessing Political Situations and IndividualsComplex political analyses require consideration of various perspectives and operational realities, as illustrated in the discussion of Joe Biden's relationship with China.

The assessment of political situations and individuals, especially those in positions of power, can be complex and multifaceted. In the discussion, Brian was challenged on his analysis of Joe Biden's relationship with China. While some argued that Biden's actions against China suggest he is not an agent, others pointed to the operational realities of espionage and counterintelligence. Using a hypothetical scenario of recruiting a head of state as a clandestine agent, it was emphasized that the operational balance and tension would play a significant role in determining the extent of requests made and the duration of the operation. Ultimately, the discussion underscored the importance of considering multiple perspectives and complexities when evaluating political situations.

    • Discussing the Threat of a Compromised US PresidentForeign powers could potentially recruit a US president, accessing sensitive information and influencing decisions, with serious national security implications.

The discussion revolves around the potential threat of a compromised US president or executive, specifically Joe Biden, and the implications of such a situation for national security. The speakers explore the possibility of a foreign power, such as China, recruiting Biden and influencing his decisions on key issues, including military strategies and war plans. They argue that even if a compromised president continues actions harmful to the recruiting power, the access to sensitive information would outweigh the negatives. The conversation also touches upon the Biden family's past relationships with foreign governments and the potential implications of these connections. The speakers emphasize the importance of transparency and truth in dealing with such matters, quoting John 8:32. Overall, the conversation underscores the significance of maintaining the integrity of the highest political offices and the potential consequences of compromising that integrity.

    • Looking to the past for hope and perspectiveDuring challenging times, finding historical and spiritual perspective can help us rise above chaos and stress. Listen to 'Politics by Faith' for a fresh perspective on current events and the chance to win cash prizes.

Even during challenging times, we can find hope and perspective by looking to the past and the wisdom of the Bible. Mike Slater, from the podcast "Politics by Faith," encourages listeners to approach current events with a historical and spiritual perspective. While the world may seem chaotic and stressful, the podcast offers a way to understand that we have faced similar challenges before and can rise above them.
