    • The disproportionate impact of cancer on Black communities in AmericaThe systemic issues affecting Black communities, including disproportionate cancer rates and fear of police encounters, deserve acknowledgement and empathy.

While some may view certain situations as less tragic or sad, such as choosing not to get in a hot air balloon, there are more profound and pervasive issues that deserve our attention and empathy. For instance, the disproportionate impact of cancer on Black males and females in America is a significant issue that warrants discussion. This issue extends beyond just the entertainment industry, where there may be a perception that Black actors and performers only get to speak about their struggles. It is crucial to acknowledge and address the systemic issues that affect Black communities, while also allowing space for them to celebrate their achievements and successes. Furthermore, the fear and anxiety experienced by Black individuals in their daily lives, including the fear of police encounters, are very real and deserve acknowledgement and understanding.

The Carmichael Show tackles complex and controversial issues in a thought-provoking and humorous way, sparking both acceptance and backlash from viewers. The show's raw and unapologetic approach to addressing topics such as racism, mass shootings, infidelity, and abuse sets it apart from other comedies. Some viewers appreciate the opportunity to engage in deeper conversation and reflection, while others prefer to turn their brains off and watch mindless entertainment. The show's creators aim to challenge the status quo and spark important conversations, even if it means making some viewers uncomfortable. The protagonist's character in the show also reflects this theme, as he grapples with the complexities of his job and the expectations placed upon him. Ep. 13, Part 2: Kevin Fagan's Story About a San Francisco Homeless Veteran

Ep. 13, Part 2: Kevin Fagan's Story About a San Francisco Homeless Veteran

In 2003, San Francisco Chronicle editors put Kevin Fagan and a photographer on the streets, literally, to live among the homeless population in order to really capture what that life was like.

In this episode, Part 2 of a three-part podcast, Kevin will talk about life on the streets of San Francisco, specifically right around the time of Super Bowl 50, in early 2016. Around 350 homeless people moved from the foot of Market Street, where a makeshift party area was constructed for the football game, to the area under the 101 onramp, on Division Street. It was there that he and a photographer, Lea Suzuki, met Kathy Gray, a transgender Army veteran.

Today's episode is all about Kathy's journey. Here is Kevin and Lea's latest story about Kathy (and other homeless people from Division Street):

Check back Thursday for Part 3 of Kevin's podcast.
