    • EWG Dirty Dozen and Clean FifteenThe Environmental Working Group's lists of Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen help consumers make informed decisions about buying organic produce to reduce pesticide exposure. Sweet bell peppers, potatoes, and celery have high pesticide residues, while avocados, sweet corn, and pineapples have the least.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiles lists of the "Dirty Dozen" and "Clean Fifteen" produce items based on their pesticide content. These lists can help consumers make informed decisions about which produce items to buy organic and which can be purchased conventionally to reduce exposure to pesticides. For instance, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, and celery are among the produce items with the highest pesticide residues, while avocados, sweet corn, and pineapples have the least. These lists can be found on the EWG website, and it's recommended to check them out for more information. The speaker also shared her personal experience of recovering from being sick and the joy of being able to do yoga again, including attempting headstands.

    • Pesticide residues in conventional fruitsConventional fruits like strawberries, apples, spinach, and nectarines contain high levels of pesticide residues, with some samples having over 10 different pesticides. Buying organic produce can help minimize exposure to harmful pesticides, especially for children and pregnant women.

Conventional fruits, particularly strawberries, apples, spinach, and nectarines, contain high levels of pesticide residues that can pose health risks, especially for children and developing fetuses. For instance, a single strawberry sample contained 22 pesticide residues, and nearly one-third of all conventionally raised strawberry samples contain 10 or more pesticides. Similarly, 97% of conventionally raised spinach samples had pesticide residues, with relatively high concentrations of neurotoxic insecticides like permethrin. Nectarines also contain residues of 15 different pesticides. These findings highlight the importance of buying organic produce, especially for families with young children, to minimize exposure to harmful pesticides.

    • Pesticides in produce and child developmentChildren are more susceptible to the harmful effects of pesticides in produce, which can lead to developmental issues, lower IQ, and even disorders like Alzheimer's and Asperger's. Focus on the 'Clean 15' produce items to minimize their exposure, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and avocados.

Babies and young children are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of pesticides in produce than adults. A study conducted over 19 years in the Solanas Valley in California involving over 800 children found that exposure to these chemicals can lead to developmental issues, lower IQ, and even disorders like Alzheimer's, Asperger's, and others. To minimize their exposure, consider focusing on the "Clean 15" produce items, which have the least amount of pesticide residue. These include broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupes, kiwis, eggplants, mangoes, asparagus, sweet peas (frozen), cabbages, pineapples, sweet corn, and avocados. For example, avocados are less susceptible to pesticides due to their thicker skin and growing on trees. Remember, if the produce has a thicker skin, like bananas, it's usually safe to consume non-organic as long as you peel it before eating.

    • Food macronutrients and assumptionsAssumptions about food macronutrient content can be inaccurate, highlighting the importance of being informed about actual nutritional values.

During our discussion, we talked about the importance of being aware of the dirty dozen and clean fifteen when it comes to organic produce. We also introduced a fun and interactive activity called the macros game, which involves guessing the macronutrient composition of different foods based on their color theme. For the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, we chose the colors red, white, and blue and each picked a food representing each color to guess the macronutrient content. This activity not only helps in learning about food composition but also adds an element of fun and competition. One interesting discovery during the game was that while I expected my red food, ground beef, to have a high protein content, I was surprised to find out that it actually had a higher fat content than protein. Similarly, my red food, rhubarb, was assumed to have more fat due to its use in vegan recipes but was found to have a higher carbohydrate content than protein or fat. These findings demonstrate the importance of being aware of the actual nutritional content of the foods we consume and not making assumptions based on preconceived notions. Overall, the discussion and the macros game served as a reminder to stay informed about our food choices and to have some fun while doing it.

    • Food macronutrient competitionParticipants identified foods as 'white' or 'blue' based on their macronutrient content, engaged in a friendly competition to guess macronutrient values, and used the internet as a resource to check their answers.

During the discussion, the participants identified potato salad as a white food, and in one cup of potato salad, there are 12 grams of carbs. They also identified blue corn tortilla chips as a blue food, and in 12 chips, there are 12 grams of fat. The participants engaged in a friendly competition to guess the macronutrient content of various foods, with the goal of staying close to the actual values. They used the internet as a resource to check their answers and move on to the tiebreaker question, which was to guess the protein content in one slice of apple pie. The conversation showcased their knowledge of various foods and their macronutrient content, as well as their ability to work together and engage in a fun and interactive activity.

    • Macro skiing competitionShannon won the competition by consuming a meal with specific macronutrients and engaging with the podcast on social media for a chance to be featured

During a 4th of July edition macro skiing competition, Shannon emerged as the winner by consuming a meal containing 13 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbs, and 2.2 grams of protein. Despite the speaker's attempt to outprice him, Shannon came out on top. The podcast team encourages listeners to engage with them on social media, specifically on their Facebook page, and invites them to leave reviews on iTunes or the Apple Podcasts app for a chance to be featured on a future episode. The team values audience engagement and encourages listeners to share the podcast with friends to help spread the word about Addicted to Fitness.
