    • Mother's Anxiety Over Missing Son in Middle East CrisisA mother's worry deepens as her son goes missing during Middle East conflict, adding to the uncertainty and complexity of the situation.

The crisis in the Middle East deepened when Hamas took over 200 hostages, including children and grandparents, during their attack on Israel two weeks ago. Rachel Goldberg, a Jerusalem resident, shared her story of her missing son, Hersh Goldberg Poland, who was last heard from during the attack at a music festival. Hersh, a 23-year-old voracious reader and travel enthusiast, had attended the festival with his best friend, who is also missing. Rachel received two text messages from her son at 8:11 a.m., which was the last contact she had with him. The Jewish Sabbath prevents Rachel from using her phone, so she and her family waited in their bomb shelter until they received the all-clear before checking for any updates. Hersh's disappearance, along with the other hostages, is now a major concern as the potential for a ground invasion into Gaza looms. The fate of these hostages remains uncertain, adding to the complexity of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

    • A mother's instincts save her son during a crisisEffective communication and quick use of technology can help reunite loved ones during a crisis.

The importance of communication and the potential consequences of not being able to reach loved ones was emphasized in this story. The mother's instincts were set off when she received two unexpected texts from her son, one expressing love and the other an apology. When she couldn't reach him by phone, she and her family frantically tried to locate him, eventually learning that he was at a music festival where a massacre was taking place. The friend's quick actions in sharing information on social media helped the family learn of their son's safety and ultimately reunite with him. This experience underscores the significance of maintaining open lines of communication and the potential for technology to be a valuable tool in times of crisis.

    • Music festival bomb shelter becomes deadly trapDuring a music festival attack, those closest to the shelter door were at greatest risk, with many casualties resulting from grenades and machine gun fire. Survivors pretended to be dead, but some were taken captive, including Hirsch, who lost his arm and was later discovered missing near the border.

During a music festival in Israel, a bomb shelter became a deadly trap when terrorists attacked, killing and injuring many young people who had sought safety there. Among them was Hirsch, who showed incredible bravery by saving lives before being taken captive. Despite initial appearances of calmness, the situation was dire, and those closest to the door were at the greatest risk. The attackers used grenades and machine gun fire, resulting in numerous casualties. Some survivors pretended to be dead, but Hirsch and a few others were taken away by the terrorists. Tragically, Hirsch's arm was blown off in the attack, and he was later discovered to be among the missing near the border with Gaza.

    • Uncertainty surrounds Hersh's kidnapping situationMother and community work tirelessly to find missing boy amid conflicting reports and Hamas' claims of safekeeping

The situation regarding the kidnapping of Hersh, one of the six children taken during a terror attack, remains uncertain. There is no concrete proof that all six children have been kidnapped, as some parents have had contact with their children. The girl who was next to Hersh when he was taken is traumatized and unable to speak. Hersh himself is in urgent need of medical attention after having his arm blown off. The community is making noise and reaching out to authorities and organizations for help. Since the last conversation, a video of one of the hostages receiving medical treatment has been released. Hamas has claimed to be holding the children in "safe places," including underground tunnels in Gaza. Rachel, Hersh's mother, has been working with a team of people around the clock since the kidnapping to help find Hirsch and spread the word about his disappearance.

    • A Bedouin man's selfless act during conflictAmidst chaos, individuals can show compassion and selflessness, offering hope for peace and understanding. A Bedouin man saved children in a bomb shelter, potentially sacrificing his own life.

Even in the midst of conflict and chaos, there are moments of humanity and compassion. A Bedouin man, believed to be a guard for fields across the road from a kibbutz, tried to save lives by calming children in a bomb shelter and may have paid the ultimate price. This story serves as a reminder that despite the us-versus-them mentality often associated with conflict, there are individuals who act selflessly and with kindness, offering hope for peace and understanding. Additionally, new information has emerged about the timeline and location of the incident, revealing that it occurred deeper in Gaza and earlier than initially thought. Furthermore, the bravery and sacrifice of a young man named Honor were acknowledged, as his actions are credited with saving the lives of eight children during the attack.

    • Grief and uncertainty after a loved one's death in a traumatic eventThe loss of a loved one in a traumatic event leaves survivors with intense emotions and complex feelings, including relief, honor, and a sense of living in a parallel universe. Support from the government and community can help, but the grieving process is ongoing and uncertain.

The experience of losing a loved one in a traumatic event, such as a hostage situation, can leave those left behind in a state of constant uncertainty and grief. Rachel's account of attending the funeral of a friend's mother who lost her son in such an event highlights the intense emotions and complex feelings that come with such a loss. The mother's reaction, which included relief that her son's actions may have saved others, as well as her own sense of honor being preserved, underscores the depth of emotion and the need for comfort and connection in the face of tragedy. The Israeli government's response, which includes assigning resources to support the families of hostages, is a small but important step in providing some measure of support during this difficult time. However, for those left behind, the experience of living in a parallel universe, where the familiar world feels just out of reach, is a constant reminder of the loss and the uncertainty that comes with it.

    • A mother's concern for all innocent people during conflictIn times of conflict, prioritize helping those affected and minimizing harm to civilians. Emphasize understanding and seek peaceful solutions.

During times of conflict and emotional turmoil, it's essential to keep focused on helping those directly affected and finding ways to minimize harm to innocent civilians. Rachel, whose son was taken hostage by Hamas, acknowledges the need for Israel's defense but expresses concern for the civilian casualties in Gaza. She hopes for minimal suffering for all innocent people, regardless of their nationality or affiliation. Rachel also emphasizes the importance of understanding one another, rather than focusing solely on differences. The complexity of the situation calls for empathy, dialogue, and a commitment to finding peaceful solutions.

    • Desire for Understanding Between Israel and HamasSpeaker expresses curiosity towards Hamas motivations, calls for empathy and compassion, and feels hopeless for peace despite release of American hostages.

Despite the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, there is a strong desire for understanding and communication between the two parties. The speaker expresses a deep curiosity to know the motivations and goals of Hamas, particularly in relation to the ongoing violence and the impact on innocent civilians. The debate around the context and justification of such actions is complex and emotional, with the speaker expressing concern and a call for empathy and compassion towards all parties involved. The release of two American nationals by Hamas, as reported, offers a glimmer of hope for potential diplomacy and resolution. However, the speaker's personal connection to the situation and the ongoing violence leaves her feeling hopeless and desperate for peace.

    • Republicans' Speaker Election Hits Impasse Amid Legal DramaThe Republican Party faces internal strife as they struggle to elect a new speaker and deal with legal developments implicating Trump and his allies in attempts to overturn election results.

The House Republicans' efforts to elect a new speaker have reached an impasse, with the current front-runner, Jim Jordan, failing to secure enough votes in two rounds of voting. The situation grew more complicated as Sydney Powell, a member of Donald Trump's legal team, pleaded guilty to attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, potentially implicating Trump himself in the case. The Republicans' infighting and lack of consensus on a new speaker, combined with the legal developments surrounding Powell, highlight the ongoing political turmoil within the party. The Daily's reporting underscores the challenges facing the GOP as they navigate these issues and seek to move forward.

Robert Baron Part 1: The Scene of the Crime

Robert Baron Part 1: The Scene of the Crime

January 25, 2017, seemed like any other ordinary day for 58-year-old Robert Baron, a respected business owner of a popular restaurant in Old Forge, Pennsylvania, and a family man. He closed up his restaurant for the evening and then made a quick trip to drive his son home nearby. Robert often spent the night in an apartment above the restaurant so he could be there first thing the next morning for the dough delivery. The delivery driver was accustomed to Robert being there on time for every delivery, but Robert wasn’t there on the morning of January 26. Thinking perhaps Robert was running late or had an emergency, he left the dough out front and went along his delivery route. Robert was supposed to pick his son, Bobby, up for work early that morning. He never showed up, and calls from Bobby’s phone went unanswered. Bobby decided to walk to the restaurant instead. There he found an unfamiliar scene, the dough sitting out front. He made his way inside, and something wasn’t right. Not only was his father not there, but things were out of place. Bobby began calling around, but no one had seen his father. Six years later, Robert’s family is still searching for answers.

If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Robert Baron, please contact the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office at (570) 963-6717.

UPDATE- Like many of you, we have been following the developments in the Robert Baron case this week. Robert Baron's remains were discovered just days ago, and Justin Schuback was arrested earlier today for the murder of Robert Baron. We covered Robert's story back in January of this year in episodes 379 and 380. In those episodes, Robert's family detailed their suspicions regarding Mr. Schuback's possible involvement. At the time, he had not been publicly named a person of interest, so we decided to bleep his name. To clear up any confusion, Mr. Shuback had been a friend of the younger Robert "Bobby" Baron, which was confirmed today in the district attorney's press conference. The family had discussed Schuback at length throughout the series and believed that he knew the inner workings of the restaurant due to the time he had spent there during his friendship with Robert's son, Bobby. You may also recall that Bobby spoke about having some alleged "altercation" with Schuback earlier in the day before his father's disappearance. It is important to remember that Mr. Schuback is innocent until proven guilty, as are any other individuals who may be involved.

We are always both profoundly saddened and relieved to hear that someone has been found. In Robert's case, the end has just begun for his family, who must now face the challenges of navigating the justice system. We continue to hold out a candle of hope that justice is served and Robert's family is able to heal, as we do for all of the families we are honored to work with to share their stories with you each week. We appreciate all of the messages and will continue to keep you updated as we receive new developments.
